Urine Output Monitoring and Acute Kidney Injury in Non-mammalian Exotic Animal Critical Care.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden, severe decrease in kidney function which can occur in any species. There are various causes of AKI, some of which are seen in domestic species and some that are unique to birds, reptiles, and amphibians. These species present unique challenges with AKI management, such as differences in anatomy and physiology, intravenous and urinary catheterization, repeated blood sampling, and their tendency to present in advanced states of illness. This article will discuss AKI, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis for non-mammalian exotic species.

Baseline molecular surveillance of monkeypox virus in wildlife and exotic animals during the pre- and early-2022 outbreak in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The global outbreak of monkeypox (mpox) in 2022 raised major concerns regarding the potential establishment of new animal reservoirs outside endemic regions. Although human-to-human transmission was the primary driver of the outbreak, reverse zoonotic transmission (spillback) from infected humans to animals could lead to long-term viral persistence in wildlife populations. Thailand, a non-endemic country affected during the 2022 outbreak, has extensive human-animal interfaces involving free-ranging wildlife, exotic pets, and urban scavenging mammals, which may facilitate cr

Diseases of Pet Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus) Presented to a Specialist Exotic-Animal Clinic: A Retrospective Study.

This retrospective study describes the relative frequency of common diseases in pet Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus, GP) presented to a specialist exotic-animal clinic (Exo-Pet Veterinary Center, Budapest, Hungary). Data from 600 GPs across 1768 visits were reviewed; 51.3% were male and 48.7% female. Malocclusion of the molars was the most common problem (27.5%), followed by urinary tract diseases (18.67%), reproductive tract diseases (16.2%), ectoparasites (16.5%), neoplasms (tumors), and tumor-like lesions (15.8%). We fitted multivariable logistic-regression models with coat type, age, and sex

Burnout among veterinarians working with exotic animals in Italy: a cross-sectional study using the burnout assessment tool (BAT-12).

Burnout is an occupational phenomenon resulting from poorly managed chronic workplace stress, and veterinary medicine is among the professions at highest risk. Veterinarians working with exotic animals represent a specialised professional subgroup whose wellbeing may affect the availability of dedicated care for non-traditional species. To our knowledge, no study has examined burnout in this population. This study estimated burnout prevalence and identified demographic, occupational, and psychosocial work factors associated with burnout in Italian veterinarians specialising in exotic animals,

Reproductive Disorders in Pet Reptiles Presented to a Specialized Exotic Animal Referral Center in Northern Italy (2020-2023).

Reproductive disorders display an important, often understudied aspect of veterinary clinical practice in reptiles. The present study provides an overview of such conditions analyzing their prevalence, clinical manifestations, and therapeutic management in reptiles (Testudines and Squamata) presented by private owners to a specialized exotic animal clinic in northern Italy. A retrospective analysis of 646 reptile cases reported between 2020 and 2023 revealed that reproductive disorders affecting both male and female reptiles accounted for 11.11% of all clinical cases. The most frequently diagn

Sero-Epidemiological Survey of Orthopoxvirus in Stray Cats and in Different Domestic, Wild and Exotic Animal Species of Central Italy.

Orthpoxvirus infection can spread more easily in a population with a waning immunity with the subsequent emergence/re-emergence of the viruses pertaining to this genus. In the last two decades, several cases of Orthopoxvirus, and in particular Cowpoxvirus infections in humans were reported in different parts of the world, possibly due to the suspension of smallpox vaccinations. To date, in Italy, few investigations were conducted on the presence of these infections, and because of this a serosurvey was carried out to evaluate Cowpoxvirus infection in feline colonies situated in the province of

[Experiences with ivermectin in exotic animals: scabies in camelids (Camelus bactrianus, Lama guanicoe, L. glama) and scabies and roundworms in bears (Thalarctos maritimus and Ursus arctos)].

For the control of scabies in tylopodes (L. bactrianus, L. guanicoe, L. glama) and brown bears 0.2 mg/kg body weight (1 ml/50 kg body weight) of Ivermectin subcutaneously injected proved to be remedy of choice. In Kodiak-bears the oral application of Ivomec-solution was effective against ascariasis, not, however, in polar bears. Sufficient effect was reached only once, whereas Equalan-paste proved to be highly effective. Despite of strong hygienic measures continous follow-up treatment for the prevention of re-invasion is indispensible.

A retrospective study (2006-2020) of biopsy cases in pet guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), degus (Octodon degus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) at an exotic animal clinic in Tokyo, Japan.

Hystricomorphs, such as guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), degus (Octodon degus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), have become increasingly popular pet animals in Japan. However, comprehensive data on diseases in these animals remain limited, primarily restricted to single case reports, except for guinea pigs. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in pet guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas in Japan and to describe their epidemiological characteristics. We reviewed biopsy samples from guinea pigs (n = 134), degus (n = 57) and chinchillas

Soft Tissue Surgery in Reptiles.

This review article outlines soft tissue surgery in reptiles, emphasizing adaptation of domestic carnivore principles to reptile anatomy and physiology. It covers inclusion criteria for literature, preoperative management (thermoregulation, fasting, fluids, analgesia, and antibiotics), and species-specific considerations for patient handling and asepsis. Detailed sections describe surgical approaches across systems: skin and subcutaneous tissue, venous/arterial vasculature (aneurysms), coelomic surgery (coeliotomy approaches for saurians, ophidians, chelonians, and crocodilians), digestive tra

Injuries and envenomation by exotic pets in Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: Exotic pets are increasingly popular in Hong Kong and include fish, amphibians, reptiles, and arthropods. Some of these exotic animals are venomous and may cause injuries to and envenomation of their owners. The clinical experience of emergency physicians in the management of injuries and envenomation by these exotic animals is limited. We reviewed the clinical features and outcomes of injuries and envenomation by exotic pets recorded by the Hong Kong Poison Information Centre. METHODS: We retrospectively retrieved and reviewed cases of injuries and envenomation by exotic pets r

Bacterial and parasitic zoonoses of exotic pets.

Zoonoses are estimated to make up to 75% of today's emerging infectious diseases. Many of these diseases are carried and transmitted by exotic pets and wildlife. Exotic animal practitioners must be aware of these risks not only to protect their health but also to safeguard the health of staff and clients. This article reviews selected bacterial and parasitic zoonoses associated with exotic animals.

Survey of zoonotic dermatoses in client-owned exotic pet mammals in southern Italy.

Several 'exotic' mammalian species (e.g. rabbits, rodents, ferrets and hedgehogs) live in close proximity to humans as companion pets. Skin diseases (SD) are frequent causes of morbidity in exotic pet mammals, and most of those SDs have a zoonotic potential. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequencies and types of zoonotic dermatosis (ZD) in client-owned, exotic pet mammals in Southern Italy. Six-hundred and fifty-five medical records of exotic pet mammals examined between 2011 and 2012, across twenty private practice veterinary clinics around the Naples area (Italy), were retro

Endangered Exotic Pets on Social Media in the Middle East: Presence and Impact.

The popularization of exotic pets on celebrity social media in the Middle East has led to questionable impacts on exotic pet demand and threats to species conservation. The objective of this study was to identify exotic animal species featured on Middle Eastern celebrity social media account posts, the public perception of those posts, and their potential impacts on exotic pet demand and conservation (for global-scale extrapolation). Public social media accounts of highly influential persons from oil-rich Middle Eastern regions were manually investigated to evaluate subject demographics, speci

Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1 risk in a child bitten by a Bonnet Macaque monkey.

BACKGROUND: Exotic animal importation and trade has the potential to expose the public to a variety of injuries and diseases not endemic to the United States. Bonnet Macaque monkeys are a fairly common primate illegally held in captivity. These monkeys become aggressive as they age past 2 years and are known to carry asymptomatic Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1 infection. OBJECTIVE: This case is presented to illustrate the point that simple wound management alone may not only be insufficient but could be fatal in certain exotic animal bites and that the emergency physician should consult with au

Emergency Presentations Associated with Cardiovascular Disease in Exotic Herbivores.

Exotic animals, including small herbivores, are increasing in popularity as companion animals. Commonly owned exotic herbivores include guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rabbits. These animals fall into the category of prey species with an inherent instinct to hide their illness until severely affected by the disease process. Therefore, any of these animals presented as an emergency case must be carefully evaluated for chronic underlying illness. Cardiovascular emergency and critical care principles are similar across all mammalian species. However, specialized techniques and adaptations are occas

Injuries, envenomations and stings from exotic pets.

A variety of exotic vertebrate and invertebrate species are kept as 'pets' including fishes, amphibians (for example, frogs and toads), reptiles (turtles, crocodiles, lizards and snakes), birds, mammals (for example, primates, civets, and lions), and invertebrates (for example spiders, scorpions, and centipedes), and ownership of some of these animals is rising. Data for 2009-2011 suggest that the number of homes with reptiles rose by approximately 12.5%. Recent surveys, including only some of these animals, indicated that they might be present in around 18.6% of homes (equal to approximately

Analysis of exotic squirrel trade and detection of human infections with variegated squirrel bornavirus 1, Germany, 2005 to 2018.

Following the discovery in 2015 of the variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) in fatal encephalitis cases among exotic squirrel breeders and a zoo animal caretaker in Germany, a case definition was developed. It was employed during trace-back animal trade investigations and sero-epidemiological studies among breeders and zoo animal caretakers of holdings with VSBV-1 infected squirrels. During the investigation, two possible human cases who had died of encephalitis were identified retrospectively among the squirrel breeders. Moreover, one probable human case was detected among the breeders w
