Interface-Engineered Magnetic Anisotropy in Zigzag Nanostructured Thin Films.

Precise control of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) in thin films is essential for next-generation spintronic devices and magnetic sensors. While conventional oblique-angle deposition (OAD) engineers this anisotropy via tilted columnar nanostructures, it is fundamentally limited by morphological instabilities at larger thicknesses. The present study utilises sequential oblique-angle deposition (S-OAD), which overcomes these limitations by fabricating zigzag nanostructures that prevent column merging and introduce periodically repeated high-density interfaces. In this study, the precise influ

Deciphering Molecular Charge Anisotropy: The Case of Antibody Solutions.

Electrostatic interactions fundamentally govern the structure, stability, and dynamics of charged (bio)matter, yet the impact of heterogeneous and anisotropic charge distributions on the behavior of protein solutions remains elusive. Here, we introduce a versatile multiscale framework that directly connects molecular-level electrostatics to collective properties via a colloid-inspired coarse-grained modeling combined with neural network-assisted optimization. Using monoclonal antibodies as a model system, our inverse design approach identifies charge patterns capable of reliably reproducing ex

Collagen Induces Anisotropy in Fingertip Subcutaneous Tissues During Contact.

The subcutaneous mechanical response of the fingertip is highly anisotropic due to the presence of a network of collagen fibers linking the outer skin layer to the bone. The impact of this anisotropy on the fingerpad deformation, which had not been studied until now, is here demonstrated using a two-dimensional finite element model of a transverse section of the finger. Different distributions of fiber orientations are considered: radial (physiologic), circumferential, and random (isotropic). The three variants of the model are assessed using experimental observations of a finger pressed on a

Magnetic order and magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional ilmenenes.

Iron ilmenene is a new two-dimensional material that has recently been exfoliated from the naturally occurring iron titanate found in ilmenite ore, a material that is abundant on the earth's surface. In this work, we theoretically investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of 2D transition-metal-based ilmenene-like titanates. The study of magnetic order reveals that these ilmenenes usually present intrinsic antiferromagnetic coupling between the 3d magnetic metals decorating both sides of the Ti-O layer. Furthermore, the ilmenenes based on late 3d brass metals, such as CuTi

Quantifying magnetic anisotropy using X-ray and neutron diffraction.

In this work, the magnetic anisotropy in two iso-structural distorted tetrahedral Co(II) complexes, CoX 2tmtu2 [X = Cl(1) and Br(2), tmtu = tetra-methyl-thio-urea] is investigated, using a combination of polarized neutron diffraction (PND), very low-temperature high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and CASSCF/NEVPT2 ab initio calculations. Here, it was found consistently among all methods that the compounds have an easy axis of magnetization pointing nearly along the bis-ector of the compression angle, with minute deviations between PND and theory. Importantly, this work represents the

Analysis of breast thermograms using Gabor wavelet anisotropy index.

In this study, an attempt is made to distinguish the normal and abnormal tissues in breast thermal images using Gabor wavelet transform. Thermograms having normal, benign and malignant tissues are considered in this study and are obtained from public online database. Segmentation of breast tissues is performed by multiplying raw image and ground truth mask. Left and right breast regions are separated after removing the non-breast regions from the segmented image. Based on the pathological conditions, the separated breast regions are grouped as normal and abnormal tissues. Gabor features such a

MRI study of white matter diffusion anisotropy in schizophrenia.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can provide information about brain white matter integrity. The results of DTI studies in schizophrenia are somewhat variable and could benefit from standardized image processing methods. Fourteen patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 14 healthy volunteers underwent DTI. Scans were analyzed using a rigorous voxelwise approach. The key dependent variable, fractional anisotropy, was lower for patients in the corpus callosum, left superior temporal gyrus, parahippocampal gyri, middle temporal gyri, inferior parietal gyri, medial occipital lobe,

Anisotropy of Young's modulus of human tibial cortical bone.

The anisotropy of Young's modulus in human cortical bone was determined for all spatial directions by performing coordinate rotations of a 6 by 6 elastic stiffness matrix. The elastic stiffness coefficients were determined experimentally from ultrasonic velocity measurements on 96 samples of normal cortical bone removed from the right tibia of eight human cadavers. The following measured values were used for our analysis: c11 = 19.5 GPa, c22 = 20.1 GPa, c33 = 30.9 GPa, c44 = 5.72 GPa, c55 = 5.17 GPa, c66 = 4.05 GPa, c23 = 12.5 GPa. The remaining coefficients were determined by assuming that th

Biomimetic Anisotropy for Directional Transport of Liquid and Solid Samples.

Biomimetic anisotropy is defined as intentionally engineered, nature-inspired directional differences in structure, chemistry, roughness, stiffness, or pore architecture. These directional differences lower transport resistance in one direction relative to the opposite direction, which results in rectified transport. In this review, anisotropy design is synthesized across surfaces, porous materials, and soft systems, with transport considered for droplets, low-surface-tension liquids, particles, and soft objects. Biological inspirations are summarized first, and the design lessons that can be

Atomistic simulations of crystallographic anisotropy and defects in shock loading.

The impact of crystallographic orientation, select grain boundaries, and vacancies on the shock response of aluminum was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Shock loading in the [001], [011], and [111] directions was explored, revealing anisotropic behavior in shock speed, generated dislocation density, and melting. The Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) in the [100], [110], and [111] directions were calculated as 18.7 GPa, 17.8 GPa, and 22.5 GPa, respectively. These results were found to be an order of magnitude larger than the uniaxial compressive yield strengths computed at high st

Exchange anisotropies in microwave-driven singlet-triplet qubits.

Hole spin qubits are emerging as the workhorse of semiconducting quantum processors because of their large spin-orbit interaction, enabling fast, low-power, all-electric operations. However, this interaction also causes non-uniformities, resulting in site-dependent qubit energies and anisotropies. Although these anisotropies enable single-spin control, if not properly harnessed, they can hinder scalability. Here, we report on microwave-driven singlet-triplet qubits in planar germanium and use them to investigate spin anisotropies. For in-plane magnetic fields, the spins are largely anisotropic

Benchmarking the anisotropy of nitroxyl radical solvation with IR spectroscopy.

Two simple nitroxyl radicals, di-tert-butyl nitroxyl (DTBN) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) are solvated by one or two water, methanol, tert-butyl alcohol or phenol molecules. The resulting low temperature IR spectra of the vacuum-isolated microsolvates in the OH stretching range are assigned based on harmonic DFT predictions for closed shell solvent dimers and trimers and their offset from experiment, to minimise theory-guided assignment bias. Systematic conformational preferences for the first and second solvent molecule are observed, depending on the conformational rigidity o

Transverse anisotropy in the deformation of the muscle during dynamic contractions.

When pennate muscle fibres shorten, the transverse deformation of fibres results in an increase in pennation angle of fascicles (bundles of fibres) and transverse deformation of muscle belly. Transverse shape changes of a muscle can influence force generation. Recent modelling studies predicted asymmetrical transverse deformations in the muscle fascicles in the gastrocnemii. However, these predictions have not been tested experimentally. As muscle is a 3D entity, it is important to explore the structural changes in a 3D perspective to enhance our understanding of the underlying structural mech

On the Spatiotemporal Material Anisotropy of the Vitreous Body in Tension and Compression.

Although linked to several vitreoretinal pathologies including traumatic retinal tears, breaks, and symptomatic vitreomacular traction, the dynamic material behavior of the vitreous body in response to mechanical loads is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate spatiotemporal patterns of collagen fiber reorganization and vitreous deformation (strain) in response to tensile and compressive forces. Using thick slabs of bovine eyes we examined collagen fiber reorganization following tensile and compressive step-loading with quantitative polarized light imaging. Strains were

Effects of multiscale anisotropy on basin and hyporheic groundwater flow.

Various subsurface flow systems exhibit a combination of small-scale to large-scale anisotropy in hydraulic conductivity (K). The large-scale anisotropy results from systematic trends (e.g., exponential decrease or increase) of K with depth. We present a general two-dimensional solution for calculation of topography-driven groundwater flow considering both small- and large-scale anisotropy in K. This solution can be applied to diverse systems with arbitrary head distribution and geometry of the water table boundary, such as basin or hyporheic flow. In a special case, this solution reduces to t

Assessment of cellular actin dynamics by measurement of fluorescence anisotropy.

To study cellular actin dynamics, a cell-free assay based on fluorescence anisotropy was developed. Using G-actin-Alexa as a probe, we found that anisotropy enhancement reflects F-actin elongation. Anisotropy enhancement varies with the concentration of magnesium and calcium cations and with ethylenediaminetetraacetate or well-known effectors of the polymerization. This assay gives the overall status of actin dynamics in cell extracts which are the closest conditions to in vivo, implying most of the regulating proteins that are missing in purified actin measurements. It can be used in a large-

Increased anisotropy in neonatal meningitis: an indicator of meningeal inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Increased anisotropy in brain abscesses has been shown to be due to adhesion of inflammatory cells and is suggestive of an active inflammatory process. The objective of this study was to determine if similar changes occur in the pia-arachnoid on the surface of the cerebral cortex in patients with pyogenic meningitis, and if these changes regress following antibiotic therapy. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed on 14 term neonates (mean age 13 days) with bacterial meningitis and 10 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Regions of interest (ROIs) were placed on

Directional permeability anisotropy of 1 mm3 sandstone digital sub-samples under fixed micro-CT field of view and its relationship with tortuosity anisotropy.

In digital core studies, researchers usually use kg, the geometric mean of absolute permeabilities in three orthogonal directions, to describe the overall seepage capacity of a rock sample. However, this common practice tends to mask the directional differences hidden in kx, ky and kz. In this paper, we selected 20 digital sub-samples with a uniform size of 1 mm×1 mm×1 mm, which were cut from the fixed micro-CT (micro X-ray computed tomography) field of view of 5 parent sandstone samples. Based on pore space reconstruction and single-phase steady-state seepage simulation, we calculated the per

Fluorescence Anisotropy as a Tool to Study Protein-protein Interactions.

Protein-protein interactions play an essential role in the function of a living organism. Once an interaction has been identified and validated it is necessary to characterize it at the structural and mechanistic level. Several biochemical and biophysical methods exist for such purpose. Among them, fluorescence anisotropy is a powerful technique particularly used when the fluorescence intensity of a fluorophore-labeled protein remains constant upon protein-protein interaction. In this technique, a fluorophore-labeled protein is excited with vertically polarized light of an appropriate waveleng
