Semantic Feature Training in Combination with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) for Progressive Anomia.

We examined the effectiveness of a 2-week regimen of a semantic feature training in combination with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for progressive naming impairment associated with primary progressive aphasia (N = 4) or early onset Alzheimer's Disease (N = 1). Patients received a 2-week regimen (10 sessions) of anodal tDCS delivered over the left temporoparietal cortex while completing a language therapy that consisted of repeated naming and semantic feature generation. Therapy targets consisted of familiar people, household items, clothes, foods, places, hygiene implements, a

The neural correlates of anomia in the conversion from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Language impairment is frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD): in this study, we investigated the extent and distribution of brain atrophy in subjects with conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD with and without naming difficulties. METHODS: This study was approved by the institutional review board and was HIPAA compliant. All subjects or their legal representatives gave informed consent for participation. Ninety-one subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) with (N = 51) and without (N = 40) naming impairment as p

The association between nonverbal fluency and anomia treatment outcomes in people with post-stroke aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Many people with aphasia experience concomitant executive functioning deficits, and the literature supports a role of executive functioning in treatment response. However, the optimal executive functioning assessment for measuring this impact is unclear, as is the extent to which outcomes (e.g., acquisition, generalization) may be impacted differently. The present retrospective study aimed to determine the degree to which nonverbal fluency, one measure of executive functioning with minimal language demand, was associated with naming treatment acquisition, stimulus generalization,

Treatment of verb anomia in aphasia: efficacy of self-administered therapy using a smart tablet.

Aphasia is a chronic condition that usually requires long-term rehabilitation. However, even if many effective treatments can be offered to patients and families, speech therapy services for individuals with aphasia often remain limited because of logistical and financial considerations, especially more than 6 months after stroke. Therefore, the need to develop tools to maximize rehabilitation potential is unquestionable. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of a self-administered treatment delivered with a smart tablet to improve written verb naming skills in CP, a 63-year-old woman

Correlates of anomia in non-semantic variants of primary progressive aphasia converge over time.

To track neural correlates of naming performance with disease progression, we estimated key areas affected in nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) and logopenic (lvPPA) primary progressive aphasia variants over time and changes in naming correlates over time. Twenty-nine non-semantic PPA participants (17 nfvPPA and 12 lvPPA) were selected based upon current diagnostic criteria and PiB-PET status and conducted a confrontation-naming task and a structural MRI. Linear mixed-effect models implemented in FreeSurfer were used for tracking cortical thickness and epicenters of atrophy over time. Using averag

Different variables predict anomia in different subjects: a longitudinal study of two Alzheimer's patients.

Two Alzheimer's patients participated in a longitudinal study of picture naming aimed at analysing the effect of lexical frequency, age of acquisition, stimulus familiarity, word length, name imageability, visual complexity and semantic category membership on naming success. The results were analysed with a new method [Capitani, E., & Laiacona, M. (2004). A method for studying the evolution of naming error types in the recovery of acute aphasia: A single-patient and single-stimulus approach. Treatment of anomia using errorless versus errorful learning: are frontal executive skills and feedback important?

BACKGROUND: Studies from the amnesia literature suggest that errorless learning can produce superior results to errorful learning. However, it was found in a previous investigation by the present authors that errorless and errorful therapy produced equivalent results for patients with aphasic word-finding difficulties. A study in the academic literature of phoneme discrimination learning found that errorful learning produced equivalent results to errorless learning when feedback was given. In the authors' previous study, feedback was available to the participants in the errorful therapy. It is

Left unilateral agraphia and tactile anomia. Disturbances seen after occulusion of the anterior cerebral artery.

A 53-year-old right-handed Japanese man had a callosal disconnection syndrome associated with an occlusion of the left pericallosal artery. Computerized tomography scan confirmed a left medial lesion affecting the cingulate gyrus, the paracentral lobule, the precuneus of the left hemisphere, and most probably the corpus callosum. This anterior cerebral artery syndrome was characterized by right hemiparesis with predominant crural involvement, unilateral left-sided "disconnection" agraphia, and left unilateral "disconnection" tactile naming deficit. To our knowledge, this is the first case in t

Using phonemic cueing of spontaneous naming to predict item responsiveness to therapy for anomia in aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Anomia refers to difficulties retrieving words and is 1 of the most common symptoms of aphasia and hence often the target of therapy. The principal aim of the present study was to explore, for the first time, whether it is possible to predict the responsiveness of individual words to naming therapy from the psycholinguistic properties of those words and from the length of the phonemic cue required to name them. The relationship between this form of cueing and the outcome of naming therapy is of particular interest given that cueing is an established research and clinical tool withi

Bridging the gap: can impairment-based therapy for anomia have an impact at the psycho-social level?

BACKGROUND: Studies of therapy with people with aphasia tend to use impairment-based and functional measures of outcome. The views of participants are not formally evaluated. Current health and socialcare practice requires intervention to be explicitly client-centred and evidence-based. It is therefore important to investigate the broader effects of speech and language therapy. AIMS: To explore the outcome of a therapy for anomia using the Communication Disability Profile (CDP), focusing particularly on participants' ratings of 'activity'. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Overall eight people with apha

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) for patients with Post-Stroke Anomia: Preliminary Data on Picture Naming Performance.

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) treating patients with post-stroke anomia using a picture-naming task and a Single-Case Experimental Design (SCED). A right-handed 38-year-old woman with a left-hemisphere stroke and a left-handed 54-year-old man with a right-hemisphere stroke underwent an eight-week treatment program. Specifically, they participated in a picture-naming task three times a week, alternating between sessions with and without tACS stimulation every two weeks. Electroencephalography (EEG) measurements were taken at

Success of Anomia Treatment in Aphasia Is Associated With Preserved Architecture of Global and Left Temporal Lobe Structural Networks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Targeted speech therapy can lead to substantial naming improvement in some subjects with anomia following dominant-hemisphere stroke. We investigated whether treatment-induced improvement in naming is associated with poststroke preservation of structural neural network architecture. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with poststroke chronic aphasia underwent 30 hours of speech therapy over a 2-week period and were assessed at baseline and after therapy. Whole brain maps of neural architecture were constructed from pretreatment diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging t

Effects of the anomia therapy on the default mode and the language networks of the brain: An functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study.

Elucidating the mechanisms of successful word retrieval by anomia therapy could improve our knowledge about language processing and also help design effective treatments. The two main subcomponents of resting-state networks related to language processing are the default mode network (DMN) and the language network (LN). To study how changes in brain activation occur due to anomia therapy, we investigated pre-and-post changes in the DMN and LN activation nodes in a deficit-based treatment of 15 persons with aphasia (PWAs). In this method, seven participants (mean age 46.71 ± 8.99) with predomina

A Principled Relation between Reading and Naming in Acquired and Developmental Anomia: Surface Dyslexia Following Impairment in the Phonological Output Lexicon.

Lexical retrieval and reading aloud are often viewed as two separate processes. However, they are not completely separate-they share components. This study assessed the effect of an impairment in a shared component, the phonological output lexicon, on lexical retrieval and on reading aloud. Because the phonological output lexicon is part of the lexical route for reading, individuals with an impairment in this lexicon may be forced to read aloud via the sublexical route and therefore show a reading pattern that is typical of surface dyslexia. To examine the effect of phonological output lexicon

Postencephalitic Proper- and Common-name Anomia, Alexia With Agraphia, and Mild Semantic Deficit due to Left Anterior Temporal Lobe Lesion.

Here we report the case of an individual who developed proper- and common-name anomia with no category specificity, alexia with agraphia for kanji (Japanese morphograms), and mild verbal and semantic memory impairment after unilateral herpes simplex encephalitis. Although their common-name anomia, alexia with agraphia, and semantic memory impairment resolved within 2 years, this individual continued to experience proper-name anomia and verbal memory impairment. Encephalitic damage was limited to the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL), amygdala, hippocampus, and parahippocampal gyrus, sparing th

Taking Sides: An Integrative Review of the Impact of Laterality and Polarity on Efficacy of Therapeutic Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for Anomia in Chronic Poststroke Aphasia.

Anomia is a frequent and persistent symptom of poststroke aphasia, resulting from damage to areas of the brain involved in language production. Cortical neuroplasticity plays a significant role in language recovery following stroke and can be facilitated by behavioral speech and language therapy. Recent research suggests that complementing therapy with neurostimulation techniques may enhance functional gains, even amongst those with chronic aphasia. The current review focuses on the use of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) as an adjunct to naming therapy for individuals with chron
