Comprehensive metabolomics and flavoromics analysis reveal the changes in muscle flavor quality of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) during low-temperature waterless live transport.

Low-temperature waterless live transport impairs turbot muscle flavor, but the metabolic mechanism remains unclear. This study integrated untargeted metabolomics, electronic tongue, and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry to monitor flavor and metabolite changes during transport. Results show transport stress triggers energy depletion (ATP to inosine and hypoxanthine), membrane phospholipid degradation (glycerophosphocholine, glycerophosphoethanolamine), and protein catabolism (decreased umami amino acids), accompanied by elevated alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase,

Spatial distribution of gut microbiota in mice during the occurrence and remission of hyperuricemia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that anserine can alleviate hyperuricemia by changing the fecal microbiota of hyperuricemic mice. TOPIC: However, the fecal microbiota could not fully represent the distribution of the whole gut microbiota. Knowing the spatial distribution of the gastrointestinal tract microbiota is therefore important for understanding its action in the occurrence and remission of hyperuricemia. METHODS: This study provides a comprehensive map of the most common bacterial communities that colonize different parts of the mouse gastrointestinal tract (stomach, duodenum,

Effects of energy drinks on repeated sprint performance and cognitive function in athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Energy drinks are often used by athletes before competitions to enhance their performance. Resent research has pointed out that the performance effects of select ingredients have been studied in-dividually, but not in combination with caffeine. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of caffeine, anserine and elderberry on cognitive function and repeated sprint performance of athletes during a high-intensity exercise protocol. METHODS: We employed a double-blind, randomized, counter balanced, and crossover design. Three types of supplements were tested: placebo, caffeine (220

Distal Gracilis Tear in an Equestrian.

A 61-yr-old female equestrian presented after 2 wks of left medial thigh pain, which developed suddenly while exiting a car. She denied any history of recent trauma or falls. On examination, she was found to have tenderness at the left distal medial thigh with a palpable region of decreased tissue volume at the gracilis myotendinous junction. Point-of-care ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a high-grade partial thickness tear of the left distal gracilis at the myotendinous junction, as well as pes anserine bursal distention. She received physical therapy and underwent a 1-time

Carnosinase deficiency: a new variant with high residual activity.

Plasma carnosinase deficiency was discovered in a 12-yr-old male with profound mental retardation, severe athetoid spastic quadriparesis, optic atrophy, sensory peripheral neuropathy, and suprabulbar signs. Amino acid analysis revealed persistent carnosinuria but no detectable carnosinemia. After ingestion of L-carnosine (100 mg/kg), the patient had carnosine in his plasma and excreted 28% of the administered load as carnosine (an agematched control excreted 1.3% as carnosine). Urinary 1-methylhistidine was measurable in the patient and increased greatly during a high anserine diet. Plasma car

Conservative Treatment of Inflamed Knee Bursae.

In brief Knee bursitis often mimics other brief Pathologies, making correct diagnosis necessary to initiate appropriate treatment. Most commonly affected are the prepatellar, pes anserine, tibial collateral ligament, and two infrapatellar bursae. Other common bursitic conditions include Baker's cysts and posttraumatic adventitious hemorrhagic bursitis. Most of these can be treated conservatively with aspiration of fluid from the bursa, rest, ice, immobilization, and injection of a corticosteroid and analgesic combination. Some chronic bursitic conditions may require surgical excision of the bu

The Effects of Carnosine on Cognitive Function and Mental Health-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Previous research has shown that L-carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) can reduce cognitive decline and improve mental health outcomes, but an updated systematic review of the effects of carnosine alone or in combination with other supplemental nutrients or bioactive compounds on these interconnected outcomes is lacking. Methods: We searched multiple databases from 1 January 2006 to 30 June 2025 for clinical trials evaluating the effects of all forms of carnosine (e.g., L-carnosine, zinc-L-carnosine) alone or in combination with other supplements on cognition, brain structure and fu

Integrative analysis of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, metabolomics, and polygenic risk reveals novel metabolite associations with Alzheimer's disease.

BackgroundCerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolomics offers an opportunity to investigate in vivo biological pathways impacted in the human brain by Alzheimer's disease (AD). While impairments in brain glucose metabolism and lipid homeostasis are implicated in AD, the underlying metabolic pathways remain unclear. Genotype information can also be leveraged to study associations between CSF metabolites and AD genetic risk.ObjectiveTo evaluate how CSF metabolomic profiles and genetic risk are associated with AD pathology as reflected by established CSF biomarkers (Aβ, P-Tau, and T-Tau).MethodsWe coll

Lower extremity bursitis.

Bursitis is a common cause of lower extremity pain in patients presenting to primary care physicians. Several bursae in the lower extremity account for most of these injuries, including the ischiogluteal, greater trochanteric, pes anserine, medial collateral, prepatellar, popliteal and retrocalcaneal. Often the symptoms are mild, with the patient successfully self-treating through activity modification and other conservative measures. A systematic approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with bursitis, including prevention, relative rest, ice, compression, elevation, anti-inflammat

Effects of chicken extract on antioxidative status and liver protection under oxidative stress.

Chicken extract contains carnosine and anserine, both of which possess some antioxidant abilities. The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effects of chicken extract in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats under induced oxidative stress. Carbon tetrachloride was used as the oxidative stress inducer. Glutamic-oxalacetatic transaminase (GOT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), total antioxidant status (TAS), thiobarbituric-reactive substances (TBARS), iron content, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes were determined. We concluded that under oxidative stress, the intake of

Transarterial Embolization for Refractory Overuse Sports Injury: Pictorial Case Reports.

Transarterial embolization for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal diseases is gaining increasing interest in the field of interventional radiology. Overuse sports injury is defined as an injury occurring in the absence of a single, identifiable traumatic cause. In the treatment of this condition, there is a need for reliable results and a quick return to activity. Minimally invasive treatments with short periods of missed practice are required. Intra-arterial embolization has the potential to meet this need. In this article, we describe cases of embolization for refractory overuse sports

[M'khinza-related intoxication: about two observations].

Dysphania ambrosioides or anserine, known in Morocco as M'Khinza, is a plant belonging to family Chenopodiaceae. In Morocco, it is used for its therapeutic properties including, in particular, antipyretic properties. However, it can be toxic if it is incorrectly calibrated. We report two cases of poisoning whose data were collected in the Pediatric Emergency Department in Rabat. The study involved a 5-month old infant and a 10 year old girl with, respectively, toxic encephalopathy and severe dehydration associated with acute gastroenteritis after the ingestion of undetermined doses of infusion

Carnosine: its properties, functions and potential therapeutic applications.

Carnosine and related dipeptides such as anserine are naturally-occurring histidine-containing compounds. They are found in several tissues most notably in muscle where they represent an appreciable fraction of the total water-soluble nitrogen-containing compounds. The biological role of these dipeptides are conjectural but they are believed to act as cytosolic buffering agents. Numerous studies have demonstrated, both at the tissue and organelle level, that they possess strong and specific antioxidant properties. Carnosine and related dipeptides have been shown to prevent peroxidation of mode
