Evidence for endemism and local adaptation in Antarctic soil bacteria.

Antarctic soils represent one of the most extreme environments for microbial life on Earth, yet they harbor heterogeneous and diverse microbial communities. Biologists have long hypothesized that Antarctic microorganisms are unique from those found on other continents due to the extreme geographic isolation and the cold, dry, and challenging conditions typical of Antarctica. To test this hypothesis, we focused on a cosmopolitan bacterial genus, Arthrobacter, that is widely distributed across global soils. We first profiled a global metagenomic dataset from both Antarctic and non-Antarctic surf

Austrocedrus from the Late Cretaceous of Antarctica and its implications for the early evolution of southern cypresses (Callitroideae, Cupressaceae).

PREMISE: The modern distribution of the southern cypresses, Callitroideae (Cupressaceae), reflects a classic Gondwanan distribution. The initial diversification of Callitroideae is estimated to have occurred during the Cretaceous, yet fossils from this period are rare, hampering our understanding of its early evolutionary history. METHODS: A permineralized cluster of callitroid seed cones has been recovered from the Late Cretaceous Santa Marta Formation on James Ross Island, Antarctica. The specimen was sectioned using the acetate peel technique. We conducted a comparative morphological and a

Extreme snowstorms lead to large-scale seabird breeding failures in Antarctica.

Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that negatively impact wildlife, from individuals to whole ecosystems1. In polar environments, such events include heat waves2, anomalous sea ice concentrations3 and storms4. Polar seabirds are adapted to withstand harsh conditions, and although extreme weather events affect their breeding success and other demographic rates, they are thought to affect only a part of the population. Complete breeding failure of an entire population due to extreme environmental conditions is rarely observed5. Here we report how excep

Extremity Tourniquet Self-Application by Antarctica Zodiac Crew Members.

Search and rescue teams and Antarctic research groups use protective cold-water anti-exposure suits (AES) when cruising on Zodiacs. Extremity tourniquet (ET) self-application (SA) donned with AESs has not been previously studied. Our study therefore assessed the SA of 5 commercial ETs (CAT, OMNA, RATS, RMT, and SWAT-T) among 15 volunteers who donned these suits. Tourniquet's SA ability, ease of SA, tolerance, and tourniquet preference were measured. All ETs tested were self-applied to the upper extremity except for the SWAT, which was self-applied with the rest to the lower extremity. Ease- of

Aerosol iron speciation and seasonal variation of iron oxidation state over the western Antarctic Peninsula.

The iron (Fe) speciation and oxidation state have been considered critical factors affecting Fe solubility in the atmosphere and bioavailability in the surface ocean. In this study, elemental composition and Fe speciation in aerosol samples collected at the Palmer Station in the West Antarctic Peninsula were determined using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The elemental composition of coarse-mode (>1 μm) Fe-containing particles suggests that the region's crustal emission is the primary source of aerosol Fe. The Fe minera

Molecular Detection of Histoplasma capsulatum in Antarctica.

We detected Histoplasma capsulatum in soil and penguin excreta in the Antarctic Peninsula by sequencing after performing species-specific PCR, confirming previous observations that this pathogen occurs more broadly than suspected. This finding highlights the need for surveillance of emerging agents of systemic mycoses and their transmission among regions, animals, and humans in Antarctica.

Brucella antibody seroprevalence in Antarctic seals (Arctocephalus gazella, Leptonychotes weddellii and Mirounga leonina).

Brucellosis is a worldwide infectious zoonotic disease caused by Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Brucella, and Brucella infections in marine mammals were first reported in 1994. A serosurvey investigating the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies in 3 Antarctic pinniped species was undertaken with a protein A/G indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) and the Rose Bengal test (RBT). Serum samples from 33 Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli were analysed, and antibodies were detected in 8 individuals (24.2%) with the iELISA and in 21 (65.6%) with the RBT. We tested 48 southern el

Divergent Heat-Shock Stress Responses in Chorisodontium aciphyllum and Polytrichastrum alpinum From Maritime Antarctica.

The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme thermal events in Maritime Antarctica pose new challenges for terrestrial cryptogamic vegetation, in which bryophytes are major components. We analyzed acute heat-shock responses in two Antarctic mosses with contrasting canopy organization and habitat associations: the dense bank-forming Chorisodontium aciphyllum and the more open lawn-forming Polytrichastrum alpinum under fully hydrated conditions. Both species showed substantial short-term tissue-level heat resistance when LT50 was defined from electrolyte leakage (LT50 > 55°C), whereas Fv/Fm

Chemical Changes Under Heat Stress and Identification of Dendrillolactone, a New Diterpene Derivative with a Rare Rearranged Spongiane Skeleton from the Antarctic Marine Sponge Dendrilla antarctica.

The waters around the western Antarctic Peninsula are experiencing fast warming due to global change, being among the most affected regions on the planet. This polar area is home to a large and rich community of benthic marine invertebrates, such as sponges, tunicates, corals, and many other animals. Among the sponges, the bright yellow Dendrilla antarctica is commonly known for using secondary diterpenoids as a defensive mechanism against local potential predators. From the dichloromethane extract of sponge samples from Deception Island collected in January 2023, we isolated a novel derivativ

Age distribution of Antarctic Bottom Water off Cape Darnley, East Antarctica, estimated using chlorofluorocarbon and sulfur hexafluoride.

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were used to investigate the timescale of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) that spreads off Cape Darnley (CD) in East Antarctica. The age of the AABW was estimated based on the observed SF6/CFC-12 ratio while taking into account tracer dilution by Lower Circumpolar Deep Water. Along the western canyons off CD and the ~ 3000 to 3500 m isobaths, the bottom water age was < 5 years, reflecting the spread of newly formed CD Bottom Water. Higher ages of ~ 8 years obtained for areas east of CD and > 20 years in the northwestern offshore region indic

Did hypervitaminosis A have a role in Mawson's ill-fated Antarctic exploration?

Douglas Mawson is a national hero of Australia, having led the Australasian Antarctic expedition of 1911, and survived. His three-man sledging team was beset by a series of catastrophes. First, expert skier Belgrave Ninnis died after he fell into a deep crevasse taking with him half the dogs and a sledge of essential food and supplies. The remaining two explorers immediately turned back to base which was 315 miles away. With their rations diminished they resorted to eating their remaining six dogs over 23 days. Xavier Mertz became progressively ill with diarrhea, delirium, vocal outbursts in r

Nanoplastics affect moulting and faecal pellet sinking in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) juveniles.

Plastic debris has been identified as a potential threat to Antarctic marine ecosystems, however, the impact of nanoplastics (<1 μm) is currently unexplored. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a keystone species of Southern Ocean pelagic ecosystems, which plays a central role in the Antarctic food webs and carbon (C) cycle. Krill has been shown to rapidly fragment microplastic beads through the digestive system, releasing nanoplastics with unknown toxicological effects. Here we exposed krill juveniles to carboxylic (COOH, anionic) and amino- (NH2, cationic) polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NP

Concentrations of Thirteen Trace Metals in Scales of Three Nototheniid Fishes from Antarctica (James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula).

In this study, we assessed concentrations of 13 trace metals in the scales of Notothenia coriiceps, Trematomus bernacchii and Gobionotothen gibberifrons caught off the coast of James Ross Island (Antarctic Peninsula). Overall, our results for scales broadly match those of previous studies using different fish and different organs, with most metals found at trace levels and manganese, aluminium, iron and zinc occurring at high levels in all species. This suggests that scales can serve as a useful, non-invasive bioindicator of long-term contamination in Antarctic fishes. High accumulation of man

Do plastics serve as a possible vector for the spread of antibiotic resistance? First insights from bacteria associated to a polystyrene piece from King George Island (Antarctica).

The retrieval of a polystyrene macro-plastic piece stranded on the shores in King George Island (South Shetlands, Antarctica) gave the opportunity to explore the associated bacterial flora. A total of 27 bacterial isolates were identified by molecular 16s rRNA gene sequencing and 7 strains were selected and screened for their ability to produce biofilm and antibiotic susceptibility profiles. All the bacterial isolates were able to produce biofilm. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test to 34 antibiotics showed multiple antibiotic resistances against the molecules cefuroxime and cef

Evolutionary analysis of Antarctic teleost Toll-like receptor 2.

In the present study we address the investigation of TLR2 evolutionary selection in two Antarctic teleosts, Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae) and Chionodraco hamatus (Channichthyidae). The nucleotide sequence of TLR2 has been determined in both species, encoding 20 leucine-rich repeats (LRRs) in the extracellular region and a classical Toll/IL-1R (TIR) domain in the intracellular region. High expression level of T. bernacchii TLR2 was found in spleen and skin. Using different methods we identified six codons that underwent Darwinian selection while 20 were found to be negatively selected.

Mitogenomic organization and characteristics of deep-sea pelagic ostracods from both polar regions.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial genomes are important markers that enable the study of evolutionary history, population structure, and biogeographic patterns in polar species, offering a framework to understand how polar organisms persist and adapt to extreme environments. However, they remain understudied in ostracods, an ecologically significant group of crustaceans. This study aimed to fill this gap by assembling and annotating the complete mitochondrial genomes of five pelagic ostracod species (Boroecia maxima, B. antipoda, B. borealis, Discoconchoecia elegans, and Obtusoecia obtusata) from the

Temperature Stress Resilience in Polar Chlamydomonas Is Regulated by Acclimation to Light and Salinity: Implications for Survival in a Changing World.

Aquatic algae are key primary producers in the Arctic and Antarctic, yet how cold-water species respond to environmental change is poorly understood. The polar regions are increasingly exposed to frequent heat waves, leading to declining ice cover, increasing light availability, and decreasing salinity in polar waters. We compared three phylogenetically related but geographically distant polar Chlamydomonas species to test how habitat history shapes algal responses to light, salinity, and temperature stress. We assessed the growth, morphology, and photochemistry of psychrophilic Chlamydomonas

Fine-Scale Population Genomics Reveals Genetic Differentiation in the Brooding Amphipod Cheirimedon femoratus Across the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.

Antarctic marine ecosystems are sensitive to environmental change, and impacts on processes such as population connectivity will play a fundamental role in future population dynamics and persistence, affecting short-term demography and long-term evolution. We investigated the population genomics of the common benthic brooding Antarctic amphipod Cheirimedon femoratus (Pfeffer, 1888), using 8837 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 87 individuals collected at 4 sites in the South Shetland Islands, separated by up to 200 km: Deception Island, King George Island, Livingston Isl
