Connectivity and neurochemistry of the commissura anterior of the pigeon (Columba livia).

The anterior commissure (AC) and the much smaller hippocampal commissure constitute the only interhemispheric pathways at the telencephalic level in birds. Since the degeneration study from Zeier and Karten (), no detailed description of the topographic organization of the AC has been performed. This information is not only necessary for a better understanding of interhemispheric transfer in birds, but also for a comparative analysis of the evolution of commissural systems in the vertebrate classes. We therefore examined the fiber connections of the AC by using choleratoxin subunit B (CTB) and

Sek4 and Nuk receptors cooperate in guidance of commissural axons and in palate formation.

Sek4 and Nuk are members of the Eph-related family of receptor protein-tyrosine kinases. These receptors interact with a set of cell surface ligands that have recently been implicated in axon guidance and fasciculation. We now demonstrate that the formation of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure, two major commissural axon tracts that connect the two cerebral hemispheres, is critically dependent on Sek4 and Nuk. While mice deficient in Nuk exhibit defects in pathfinding of anterior commissure axons, sek4 mutants have defects in corpus callosum formation. The phenotype in both axon trac

Understanding microstructure of the brain by comparison of neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) with transparent mouse brain.

BACKGROUND: Neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) is a diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique with the potential to visualize the microstructure of the brain. Revolutionary histological methods to render the mouse brain transparent have recently been developed, but verification of NODDI by these methods has not been reported. PURPOSE: To confirm the concordance of NODDI with histology in terms of density and orientation dispersion of neurites of the brain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Whole brain diffusion MRI of a thy-1 yellow fluorescent protein mouse was acquir

Structural interhemispheric connectivity defects in mouse models of BBSOAS: Insights from high spatial resolution 3D white matter tractography.

White matter (WM) tract formation and axonal pathfinding are major processes in brain development allowing to establish precise connections between targeted structures. Disruptions in axon pathfinding and connectivity impairments will lead to neural circuitry abnormalities, often associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Among several neuroimaging methodologies, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that has the advantage of visualizing in 3D the WM tractography of the whole brain non-invasively. DTI is particularly valuable in unpinn

Diffusion tensor MR imaging visualizes the altered hemispheric fiber connection in callosal dysgenesis.

We report three cases of callosal dysgenesis that were evaluated by diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tractography. In partial agenesis of corpus callosum, fiber tracts from all regions of brain converged to a partially developed small genu portion and connected to the contralateral side. In complete callosal agenesis, fibers from the hemispheres failed to cross the midline and formed thick bundles running anteroposteriorly (eg, Probst bundle). The thickness of the anterior commissure was enlarged or smaller than normal brain, and other white matter tracts were not markedly different from nor

Revisiting brain rewiring and plasticity in children born without corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum is the largest white matter pathway connecting homologous structures of the two cerebral hemispheres. Remarkably, children and adults with developmental absence of the corpus callosum (callosal dysgenesis, CD) show typical interhemispheric integration, which is classically impaired in adult split-brain patients, for whom the corpus callosum is surgically severed. Tovar-Moll and colleagues (2014) proposed alternative neural pathways involved in the preservation of interhemispheric transfer. In a sample of six adults with CD, they revealed two homotopic bundles crossing the m

Effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on midsagittal commissure size in rats.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol exposure in humans can cause a variety of brain and behavioral abnormalities. The brain abnormalities include defects in the corpus callosum that range from total absence (agenesis) to reduction in size or thickness. Determination of the critical alcohol level or time period of exposure to produce these effects is difficult because of the lack of control of possible mitigating factors. METHODS: The present study was undertaken to examine possible relationships between midsagittal corpus callosum dimensions and prenatal alcohol level as measured by blood alcohol conce

The effects of total and partial callosal agenesis on the development of morphological brain asymmetries in the BALB/cCF mouse.

The corpus callosum fails to develop in some mice of the BALB/cCF strain. We report here a study on cerebral morphological asymmetry in males of this particular strain in order to test the hypothesis that the normal development of the corpus callosum is responsible for the establishment of brain asymmetries. In 46 animals the dorsal area and the weight of each hemisphere were measured. In order to identify the animals with callosal defects and check for size anomalies of the anterior commissure, the hemispheres were cut into sagittal sections and stained with cresyl violet. Measures of sagitta

A new species of the genus Myostenostomum (Platyhelminthes: Catenulida: Stenostomidae) from Lake Bile (Ukraine).

A new species of freshwater catenulids, Myostenostomum styrensis sp. nov., is described from karst-glacial Lake Bile (Rivne Region, Ukraine). The morphology description and illustrations are provided. Myostenostomum styrensis sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: the pharynx is complicated and divided into two parts (the oral part and the esophageal part), the anterior brain lobes are deeply dented, the basal parts of the anterior brain lobes are significantly elongated, the posterior lobes and transverse commissure are fused, forming an arcua

Spatial Coordinates of the Rostral Junction Points of the Genu of the Corpus Callosum and the Habenular Commissure in Tree Shrew, Mouse and Rat Brains: A Preliminary Study.

Spatial coordinate systems are essential for precise brain localization and atlas-based comparison, yet current stereotaxic frameworks mainly rely on cranial landmarks such as bregma-lambda (BL) or anterior commissure-posterior commissure (AP). Here, we defined the rostral junction point of the genu of the corpus callosum (GCCrj) that refers to the central convergence point of bilateral genu of the corpus callosum structures at the rostral part on coronal histological slices. The GCCrj and rostral junction point of the habenular commissure (HBCrj) constituted the new GCCrj-HBCrj (GH) coordinat

Anterior commissure involvement in Marchiafava-Bignami disease: MRI findings.

A 52-year-old man with a 30-year history of chronic alcohol abuse presented withseizures and progressive cognitive decline. Brain MRI demonstrated symmetricdiffusion-weighted hyperintensities involving the genu, body, and splenium of thecorpus callosum, extending to the anterior commissure, with corresponding restricteddiffusion on the apparent diffusion coefficient map. These findings were consistent withMarchiafava-Bignami disease, reflecting a toxic-metabolic demyelinating processassociated with chronic alcohol exposure.

Interhemispheric visual interaction in a patient with posterior callosectomy.

The role of anterior commissure (AC) and anterior parts of corpus callosum in visual interactions was investigated in a partial split-brain patient whose posterior and middle parts of the corpus callosum were resected surgically leaving intact only a thin portion of anterior corpus callosum. Although the primary visual areas of the two hemispheres are disconnected in the patient, we found that visual distracters presented to one hemisphere (in a crowding paradigm) impaired recognition of the target stimulus presented to the other hemisphere. The normal control group showed the same result. To

Rhythm generation, coordination, and initiation in the vocal pathways of male African clawed frogs.

UNLABELLED: Central pattern generators (CPGs) in the brain stem are considered to underlie vocalizations in many vertebrate species, but the detailed mechanisms underlying how motor rhythms are generated, coordinated, and initiated remain unclear. We addressed these issues using isolated brain preparations of Xenopus laevis from which fictive vocalizations can be elicited. Advertisement calls of male X. laevis that consist of fast and slow trills are generated by vocal CPGs contained in the brain stem. Brain stem central vocal pathways consist of a premotor nucleus [dorsal tegmental area of me

Patterned neuropathologic events occurring in hyh congenital hydrocephalic mutant mice.

Hyh mutant mice develop long-lasting hydrocephalus and represent a good model for investigating neuropathologic events associated with hydrocephalus. The study of their brains by use of lectin binding, bromodeoxyuridine labeling, immunochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that certain events related to hydrocephalus followed a well-defined pattern. A program of neuroepithelium/ependyma denudation was initiated at embryonic day 12 and terminated at the end of the second postnatal week. After the third postnatal week the denuded areas remained permanently devoid of ependyma. In c

Deficient auditory interhemispheric transfer in patients with PAX6 mutations.

PAX6 mutations are associated with absence/hypoplasia of the anterior commissure and reduction in the callosal area in humans. Both of these structures contain auditory interhemispheric fibers. The aim of this study was to characterize central auditory function in patients with a PAX6 mutation. We conducted central auditory tests (dichotic speech, pattern, and gaps in noise tests) on eight subjects with a PAX6 mutation and eight age- and sex-matched controls. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed absent/hypoplastic anterior commissure in six and a hypoplastic corpus callosum in three PAX6 su

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus sphericus in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis: convergence of olfactory and vomeronasal information in the lateral cortex and the amygdala.

This paper is an account of the afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus sphericus (NS), which is the major secondary vomeronasal structure in the brain of the snake Thamnophis sirtalis. There are four major efferent pathways from the NS: 1) a bilateral projection that courses, surrounding the accessory olfactory tract, and innervates several amygdaloid nuclei (nucleus of the accessory olfactory tract, dorsolateral amygdala, external amygdala, and ventral anterior amygdala), the rostral parts of the dorsal and lateral cortices, and the accessory olfactory bulb; 2) a bilateral projectio

The anterior commissure in Down's syndrome.

The area of a mid-sagittal secretion of the anterior commissure was found to be significantly smaller in 16 Down's syndrome patients compared with that of ten control subjects (3.78 mm2 compared with 7.52 mm2). Variables which could have influenced the differences such as brain weight, neuropathological features, relation to olfactory tract and hippocampal sizes were considered and excluded. It was deduced that smallness in size in Down's syndrome was the result of congenital malformation.

Compound Heterozygous Variants in ROBO1 Cause a Neurodevelopmental Disorder With Absence of Transverse Pontine Fibers and Thinning of the Anterior Commissure and Corpus Callosum.

BACKGROUND: Axonal guidance disorders are characterized by white matter tracts with an anomalous course, failure to cross the midline, or presence of anomalous white matter tracts. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a suitable noninvasive, in vivo neuroimaging tool to study axonal guidance disorders. We describe a novel disorder in a boy with compound heterozygous variants in the ROBO1 gene. PATIENT DESCRIPTION: The child was referred at age 13 months because of developmental delay. At age nine years, he had severe intellectual disability and hyperactivity. He was nonverbal and wheelchair depe

Heritable aspects of anomalous myelinated fibre tracts in the forebrain of the laboratory mouse.

Serial coronal or sagittal sections were stained for myelin and examined in 6 inbred, 4 hybrid, and 2 outbred mouse strains. Absent corpus callosum was seen only in BALB/cJ as reported by Wimer, but a wide range of the size of corpus callosum was also noted. The action of a major gene was not evident in backcross or F2 generations; polygenic and perhaps epistatic inheritance was indicated. In A/J, and to a lesser extent A/HeJ and BALB/cJ, the columns of fornix frequently collided with the anterior commissure and either passed around it to make a normal termination or deflected dorsally to make
