In this study, thalamic connections of the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex (PPCc) are described and compared to connections of the rostral part of PPC (PPCr) in strepsirrhine galagos. PPC of galagos is divided into two parts, PPCr and PPCc, based on the responsiveness to electrical stimulation. Stimulation of PPC with long trains of electrical pulses evokes different types of ethologically relevant movements from different subregions ("domains") of PPCr, while it fails to evoke any movements from PPCc. Anatomical tracers were placed in both dorsal and ventral divisions of PPCc to

The projections from the midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei to the cerebral cortex were studied in the rat by means of anterograde tracing with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin. The midline and intralaminar nuclear complex taken as a whole projects to widespread, predominantly frontal, cortical areas. Each of the constituent thalamic nuclei has a restricted cortical projection field that overlaps only slightly with the projection fields of adjacent midline and intralaminar nuclei. The projections of the intralaminar nuclei cover a larger cortical area than those of the midline nuclei.

The anterior thalamic nuclei are important for cognition, and memory in particular. However, little is known about how the anterior thalamic nuclei are affected in many neurological disorders partly due to difficulties in selective segmentation in in vivo scans, due to their size and location. Post-mortem studies, therefore, remain a valuable source of information about the status of the anterior thalamic nuclei. We used post-mortem tissue to assess the status of the anteroventral thalamic nucleus in Down syndrome using samples from males and females ranging from 22-65 years in age and compari…

In Caiman crocodilus, identification of nuclei that comprise the dorsal thalamus was determined by: injections of retrograde tracers into cortex/pallium; injections of retrograde tracers into the noncortical telencephalon; and injections of anterograde tracers into thalamic nuclei. With the exception of nucleus dorsolateralis anterior, which has bilateral projections, all other dorsal thalamic nuclei send axons to terminate in the ipsilateral telencephalon. Nuclei that only projected to cortex/pallium were: dorsolateralis anterior; diagonalis; and dorsal geniculate. Neuronal aggregates that se

The thalamus comprises numerous nuclei that can be grouped into five major functional domains: (1) the reticular and intralaminar nuclei influence arousal and nociception, (2) sensory nuclei handle afferent pathways, (3) the effector nuclei are involved in motor function and language, (4) associative nuclei participate in higher cognitive functions and (5) limbic nuclei influence mood and motivation. The thalamic nuclei are mainly supplied by the following four cerebral arteries: paramedian artery, anterior thalamoperforating artery, thalamogeniculate artery and posterior choroidal artery (lat

We previously reported a schizophrenia associated reduction of neuronal and oligodendrocyte number in the anterior principal thalamic nucleus (APN) in a cohort of severely impaired elderly subjects with schizophrenia (SZ) relative to age matched nonpsychiatric controls (NCs). The present study was undertaken to determine 1) if those findings could be replicated in an independent sample of less chronically impaired subjects with SZ and NCs stratified across a broader age range; 2) if the findings are specific to SZ or are also seen in unipolar major depressive (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BPD); a

The effect of electrochemical stimulation (anodic current, 100 micronA/30 sec) of thalamic nuclei was studied in nonanesthetized freely-behaving rats bearing chronic implanted electrodes and plastic cannulae inserted into the jugular vein for blood sampling. Stimulation of the anterior thalamic nuclei, the nucleus (n.) mediodorsalis thalami (MD) and the n. posteromedianus thalami at 2 p.m. on the day of proestrus prevented spontaneous ovulation and the release of LH which takes place on that day. No effect on ovulation or LH release was observed after stimulation of the n. lateralis thalami, t…

The medial parabrachial nucleus (MPB) and external part of the medial parabrachial nucleus (MPBE) relay gustatory, oral mechanosensory and other visceral information in the rat brain and reportedly project not only to the parvicellular part of the posteromedial ventral thalamic nucleus (VPMpc) but also to the ventrocaudal part of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei. Generally, the intralaminar thalamic nuclei project topographically to the caudate putamen (CPu); however, it is unclear where the ventrocaudal part of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei projects within the CPu. Thus, we visualized neur

The topography of the projections from the reticular nucleus of the thalamus (RT) to the intralaminar and medial thalamic nuclei were studied in the cat by the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Single small injections of the enzyme were made in the different intralaminar nuclei--mediodorsal, ventromedial, midline, and habenular--and in anterior group nuclei. The location and density of the neuronal labeling in the different parts of the RT were studied in each case. Our results show that 1) after injections located in all the nuclei here studied, a consistent numb

The presubiculum contains head direction cells that are crucial for spatial orientation. Here, we examined the connectivity and strengths of thalamic inputs to presubicular layer 3 neurons projecting to the medial entorhinal cortex in the mouse. We recorded pairs of projection neurons and interneurons while optogenetically stimulating afferent fibers from the anterior thalamic nuclei. Thalamic input differentially affects presubicular neurons: layer 3 pyramidal neurons and fast-spiking parvalbumin-expressing interneurons are directly and monosynaptically activated, with depressing dynamics, wh…

Specific thalamic nuclei are implicated in healthy aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. However, few methods are available for robust automated segmentation of thalamic nuclei. The threefold aims of this study were to validate the use of a modified thalamic nuclei segmentation method on standard T1 MRI data, to apply this method to quantify age-related volume declines, and to test functional meaningfulness by predicting performance on motor testing. A modified version of THalamus Optimized Multi-Atlas Segmentation (THOMAS) generated 22 unilateral thalamic nuclei. For validation, w

There is a paucity of data to guide anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) deep brain stimulation (DBS) with brain sensing. The clinical Medtronic Percept DBS device provides constrained brain sensing power within a frequency band (power-in-band [PIB]), recorded in 10-min averaged increments. Here, four patients with temporal lobe epilepsy were implanted with an investigational device providing full bandwidth chronic intracranial electroencephalogram (cEEG) from bilateral ANT and hippocampus (Hc). ANT PIB-based seizure detection was assessed. Detection parameters were cEEG PIB center frequency

Non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) antagonists have been extensively used in rodents to model psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia. Although the motor syndrome induced by acute and systemic administration of low doses of dizocilpine (MK-801) has been extensively characterized, its neurobiological basis is not fully understood. NMDA-R antagonists can disinhibit excitatory inputs in certain brain areas, but the precise circuitry is not fully known. We examined the involvement of the anterior thalamic nucleus (ATN) in hyperlocomotion and other related behaviors (stereotypies, a

The thalamus is considered a key region in the neuromechanisms of blepharospasm. However, previous studies considered it as a single, homogeneous structure, disregarding potentially useful information about distinct thalamic nuclei. Herein, we aimed to examine (i) whether grey matter volume differs across thalamic subregions/nuclei in patients with blepharospasm and blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia; (ii) causal relationships among abnormal thalamic nuclei; and (iii) whether these abnormal features can be used as neuroimaging biomarkers to distinguish patients with blepharospasm from blepha

BACKGROUND: Thalamic volume loss is one of the most consistent neuroimaging findings in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, the thalamus comprises multiple nuclei with distinct functions, and whether specific nuclei show differential vulnerability remains unclear.
PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of intra-thalamic nuclear atrophy in T1DM and evaluate its association with disease duration.
FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0 T/T1-weighted magnetization-prepared-rapid-acquisition-of-gradient-echo (MPRAGE).
STUDY TYPE: Prospective.
POPULATION: Forty-two subjects with T1DM (18-68 yea

We investigated nuclear divisions of the thalamus in the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) to gain detailed information for further developmental and comparative studies. Nissl and myelin staining, histochemistry for acetylcholinesterase and immunohistochemistry for calretinin and parvalbumin were performed on parallel series of sections. Many features of the Monodelphis opossum thalamus resemble those in Didelphis and small eutherians showing no particular sensory specializations, particularly in small murid rodents. However, several features of thalamic organization in Monode

Isolated memory disorders occur after bilateral involvement of thalamus. Anterograde amnesia is not complete; retrograde amnesia is always severe. Four groups of thalamic nuclei may be affected: anterior nuclei; midline nuclei, medialis dorsalis nuclei; intralaminar nuclei. A pathophysiologic interpretation is proposed. Three kinds of memory processes may be involved: consolidating process that leads to the formation of memory traces (anterior nuclei, midline nuclei); retrieving process that leads to the activation of memory traces (intralaminar nuclei); temporal organizing process that regard

This study (Part I) covers the comparative structure of the thalamus and metathalamus in the prosimian superfamilies, Lorisoidea and Lemuroidea. Several lemuroid specimens, namely Lemus, Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Avahi and Daubentonia, and lorisoid specimens such as Galago, Perodicticus and Loris have been used in this extensive study. The anterior nuclear group does not show much difference among these species, although attention is focussed on the differentiation of the principal anterior nucleus into anteromedial and anteroventral parts; the latter increases in structural complexity. The an
