Enhanced Toughening of the Lamellar Structure in a Black Coral by Interlocking Spines.

The black corals possess a branched, tree-like skeleton that is composed of chitin fibrils embedded within a protein matrix. This skeleton exhibits growth rings interlocked by spines. The lamellae are tightly wrapped around the spines, creating a structure akin to an onion. The indentation hardness and Young's modulus of the spines are comparable to those of the chitin rings. The compressive stress and the fracture toughness are increased by approximately 14.6% and 32.2% at higher loading rate in the dry state, but remain comparable at different loading rates in the wet state. The lamellar int

Application of an Improved Chloroform-Free Lipid Extraction Method to Staghorn Coral (Acropora cervicornis) Lipidomics Assessments.

Lipids are excellent biomarkers for assessing coral stress, although staghorn coral data (Acropora cervicornis) is lacking. Lipid extraction is the most critical step in lipidomic assessments, usually performed using carcinogenic solvents. Efficient alternative using less toxic methods, such as the BUME method using butanol and methanol as extraction solvents, have not been applied to coral lipidomics evaluations. Thus, we aimed to develop a lipidomic approach to identify important coral health biomarkers by comparing different solvent mixtures in staghorn corals. Total lipid extraction was eq

Differential coral response to algae contact: Porites tissue loss, praise for Halimeda interaction at southeast coast of India.

Worldwide, reef building corals are being degraded due to increasing anthropogenic pressure, and as a result, macroalgal cover is being increased. Hence, mechanism of coral-algal interaction, differential coral response to algal overgrowth, is critical from every geographical location to predict future coral dynamics. This paper documents the frequency of coral-algal (Halimeda) interactions, differential coral response to algal interaction. We found difference in susceptibility among coral genera to competitive effects. Out of 970 coral colonies surveyed, 36.7% were in contact with Halimeda sp

Metagenomic analysis of healthy and white plague-affected Mussismilia braziliensis corals.

Coral health is under threat throughout the world due to regional and global stressors. White plague disease (WP) is one of the most important threats affecting the major reef builder of the Abrolhos Bank in Brazil, the endemic coral Mussismilia braziliensis. We performed a metagenomic analysis of healthy and WP-affected M. braziliensis in order to determine the types of microbes associated with this coral species. We also optimized a protocol for DNA extraction from coral tissues. Our taxonomic analysis revealed Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, and Actinomycetes as th

In situ oxygen dynamics in coral-algal interactions.

BACKGROUND: Coral reefs degrade globally at an alarming rate, with benthic algae often replacing corals. However, the extent to which benthic algae contribute to coral mortality, and the potential mechanisms involved, remain disputed. Recent laboratory studies suggested that algae kill corals by inducing hypoxia on the coral surface, through stimulated microbial respiration. METHODS/FINDINGS: We examined the main premise of this hypothesis by measuring in situ oxygen microenvironments at the contact interface between the massive coral Porites spp. and turf algae, and between Porites spp. and

Convergent symbioses: morphology, life history, and niche specialization in coral and lichen mutualisms.

Corals and lichens represent some of the most diverse mutualistic symbioses in the marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Their evolutionary success is partly attributed to their association with internal, photosynthetic symbionts, which provide carbon and enable colonization of a wide-range of habitats. Although corals and lichens occupy fundamentally different ecosystems and are phylogenetically unrelated-corals are animals associated with dinoflagellates, while lichens are fungi associated with green algae/cyanobacteria-they share surprisingly many morphological, ecological, and life history tr

Documenting coral spawning in East Africa: first in situ observations from Zanzibar for three reef-building species.

Broadcast coral spawning is a vital reproductive event for many reef-building species and is essential to the resilience of coral reef ecosystems. Understanding spawning dynamics is key to assessing the reproductive health and resilience of these ecosystems. While extensively documented in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, coral spawning remains understudied in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), a region facing rapid environmental change and increasing coral decline. This study presents the first in situ coral spawning records from Zanzibar for three Scleractinian species: Galaxea astreata, Favites

Marine Envenomation in Okinawa: Overview and Treatment Concept.

Okinawa prefecture is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and reefs. The reefs host a large variety of animals, including a number of venomous species. Because of the popularity of the reefs and marine activities, people are frequently in close contact with dangerous venomous species and, thus, are exposed to potential envenomation. Commonly encountered venomous animals throughout Okinawa include the invertebrate cone snail, sea urchin, crown-of-thorns starfish, blue-ringed octopus, box jellyfish, and fire coral. The vertebrates include the stonefish, lionfish, sea snake, and mora

First report of yellow-banded tissue loss disease on coral reefs outside the Arabian/Persian Gulf.

Coral disease is a major cause of coral reef degradation, yet many diseases remain understudied. Yellow-banded tissue loss disease (YBTLD) has a distinct gross lesion morphology and to date has only been reported from the Arabian/Persian Gulf; little else is known about the ecology of the disease. We report on the first occurrence of YBTLD outside of the Arabian/Persian Gulf at 2 sites (Laku Point, Narara Reef) within the Gulf of Kachchh (GoK) located on the northwest coast of India. At Narara Reef, YBTLD was observed at 12 out of 24 transects with an average prevalence of 4.7 ± 1.3%. At Laku

Coral Gardens Reef, Belize: An Acropora spp. refugium under threat in a warming world.

Live coral cover has declined precipitously on Caribbean reefs in recent decades. Acropora cervicornis coral has been particularly decimated, and few Western Atlantic Acropora spp. refugia remain. Coral Gardens, Belize, was identified in 2020 as a long-term refugium for this species. This study assesses changes in live A. cervicornis coral abundance over time at Coral Gardens to monitor the stability of A. cervicornis corals, and to explore potential threats to this important refugium. Live coral cover was documented annually from 2012-2019 along five permanent transects. In situ sea-surface t

New Cretaceous (Aptian/Albian) boxer shrimp (Crustacea, Decapoda, Stenopodidea) from the Araripe Sedimentary Basin, NE, Brazil.

Stenopodidean shrimps are mostly cryptic in their habitats and are typically related with coral rubble or dead coral heads, rocks and crevices, and in association with other marine invertebrate such as sponges, crinoids and corals. Here, we describe a new stenopodidean shrimp, Dubiostenopus parvus n. gen. n. sp., from the Romualdo Formation (Aptian/Albian), Araripe Sedimentary Basin. The specimen studied here was collected in the municipality of Trindade, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The specimen is the imprint of a small shrimp approximately 10 mm in length, with a robust cephalothorax, a well-d

Bioaccumulation of dietary CrPic, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in juvenile coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus).

The form of chromium (Cr) is an important factor that influences its bioavailability and potential toxicity, while the difference of Cr bioaccumulation between organic and inorganic Cr has been rarely investigated. The present study compared the bioaccumulation of organic Cr (e.g., chromium picolinate (CrPic)) and inorganic Cr (e.g., trivalent (Cr(III)) and hexavalent (Cr(VI))) in juvenile coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus). The fish were exposed to a gradient level of different forms of dietary Cr for 66 days. Then the Cr bioaccumulation in fish were comparatively quantified between CrPic,

Spatio-temporal dynamics of coral-macroalgal interactions and their impacts on coral growth on urbanised reefs.

Interactions between corals and macroalgae are important in influencing benthic community structures on coral reefs and have become increasingly common occurrences. However, little is known about their temporal variation as most studies have only documented them from single surveys. To investigate the dynamics of coral-macroalgal interactions, we surveyed three urbanised reefs in Singapore bi-monthly for three years. We found that the frequency of coral-macroalgal interactions varied greatly across sites and seasons. The extent of coral-macroalgal contact was positively correlated with macroal

Lateral carbon fluxes and CO2 evasion from a subtropical mangrove-seagrass-coral continuum.

Mangrove, seagrass, and coral habitats often lie adjacent to each other in the tropics and subtropics. Lateral carbon fluxes and their consecutive effects on CO2 dynamics and air-water fluxes along the ecosystem continuum are often overlooked. We measured the partial pressure of CO2 in water and associated biogeochemical parameters with a high temporal resolution and estimated air-water CO2 fluxes along the ecosystem continuum. Their lateral fluxes were estimated by using a biogeochemical mass-balance model. The results showed that the waters surrounding mangrove, seagrass, and coral habitats

Revision of the coral-inhabiting genus Conopea (Cirripedia: Archaeobalanidae) with description of two new species of the genera Conopea and Acasta.

The morphology of archaeobalanid barnacles of the genera Conopea and Acasta inhabiting cnidarians of the orders Alcyonacea and Antipatharia was surveyed. Based on morphological characteristics, it became evident that the species of the nominal genus Conopea fell into three natural groups affiliated to three archaeobalanid genera, Conopea s.s., Acasta and Solidobalanus. The relationships between the species of Conopea s.l. and those of Acasta inhabiting alcyanaceans are analyzed using a cladistic approach. The barnacles of the genus Conopea s.s. are characterized by a strong, firm shell; the or

Conspecific interactions between corals mediate the effect of submarine groundwater discharge on coral physiology.

Land-based inputs, such as runoff, rivers, and submarine groundwater, can alter biologic processes on coral reefs. While the abiotic factors associated with land-based inputs have strong effects on corals, corals are also affected by biotic interactions, including other neighboring corals. The biologic responses of corals to changing environmental conditions and their neighbors are likely interactive; however, few studies address both biotic and abiotic interactions in concert. In a manipulative field experiment, we tested how the natural environmental gradient created by submarine groundwater

A combined diagnostic approach for the investigation of lesions resembling aspergillosis in Caribbean sea fans (Gorgonia spp.).

Aspergillosis of gorgonian sea fans is a Caribbean-wide disease characterized by focal, annular purple pigmentation with central tissue loss. We applied a holistic diagnostic approach including histopathology and a combination of culture and direct molecular identification of fungi to evaluate these lesions with the goal of determining the diversity of associated micro-organisms and pathology. Biopsies were collected from 14 sea fans without gross lesions and 44 sea fans with lesions grossly consistent with aspergillosis in shallow fringing reefs of St. Kitts. Histologically, the tissue loss m

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Cold-Water Coral-Derived Sulfitobacter faviae: Insights into Their Habitat Adaptation and Metabolism.

Sulfitobacter is one of the major sulfite-oxidizing alphaproteobacterial groups and is often associated with marine algae and corals. Their association with the eukaryotic host cell may have important ecological contexts due to their complex lifestyle and metabolism. However, the role of Sulfitobacter in cold-water corals remains largely unexplored. In this study, we explored the metabolism and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in two closely related Sulfitobacter faviae strains isolated from cold-water black corals at a depth of ~1000 m by comparative genomic analysis. The two strains shared hig

How long have we been mistaken? Multi-tools shedding light into the systematics of the widespread deep-water genus Madrepora Linnaeus, 1758 (Scleractinia).

Deep-water coral reefs are found worldwide and harbor biodiversity levels that are comparable to their shallow-water counterparts. However, the genetic diversity and population structure of deep-water species remain poorly explored, and historical taxonomical issues still need to be resolved. Here we used microsatellite markers as well as ultraconserved elements (UCE) and exons to shed light on the population structure, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic position of the genus Madrepora, which contains M. oculata, one of the most widespread scleractinian species. Population structure of 107 sa

Four uncommon cycloamphilectane-type diterpenoids with antibacterial activity from the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia brassica.

The chemical investigation on the soft coral Sinularia brassica collected off Xuwen Country, Guangdong Province, China, has resulted in the isolation and characterization of three uncommon cycloamphilectane-type diterpenoids, namely sinucycloamtin A-C (1-3), along with two known analogues (5 and 6). In addition, compounds 2 and 3 were hydrolyzed and their hydrolytic derivative sinucycloamtin D (4) was obtained. The structures of these previously undescribed compounds were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical conversion, as well as t
