[Immunohistology and prognosis in thyroid cancer. Determination of the malignancy potential of papillary and medullary neoplasms by the detection of S-100 protein and Leu-M1 antigen].

170 thyroid carcinomas were investigated for the presence of S-100-protein-positive Langerhans cells (LC) and the expression of Leu-M1-antigen. Dense LC infiltrates were found only in papillary tumours and were shown to be significantly related to prognosis. Irrespective of any other feature, no single instance of death resulting from cancer occurred among 23 tumours (including 6 cases of stage pT4) with dense infiltrates (greater than 20 LC/unit field) while 9/53 (17%) of the remaining patients died from carcinoma (p less than 0.01). The degree of epithelial Leu-M1 expression was significantl

The carcinoembryonic antigen level in pancreatic juice and mural nodule size are predictors of malignancy for branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas.

OBJECTIVE: Identification of predictors of malignancy for branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN). BACKGROUND: Main duct type IPMN has been recommended for resection. However, the indications for resection of the branch duct type IPMN have been controversial. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological factors of 134 patients undergoing resection for branch duct type IPMN, excluding main duct type IPMN, to identify predictors of the malignant behavior of this neoplasm. The cutoff values of tumor size, main pancreatic duct (MPD) size, mural nodule siz

Uncommon cases of immature-type CD56+ natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms, characterized by expression of myeloid antigen of blastic NK-cell lymphoma.

Immature-type CD56(+) natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms are classified as either myeloid/NK-cell precursor acute leukemia or blastic NK-cell lymphoma. We identified two cases of immature-type CD56(+) NK-cell neoplasms that were not categorizable as either of these entities. The first case involved a 74-year-old woman presenting with skin eruptions and pancytopenia due to bone marrow necrosis. Skin biopsy specimen revealed CD4(+), CD7(-), CD34(-), CD43(+), CD56(+), CD68(+), muramidase (lysozyme)(+), and myeloperoxidase (MPO)(-), and immunophenotyping of peripheral blood showed CD4(+), CD7(-),

Epithelial membrane antigen--a diagnostic discriminant in surgical pathology: immunohistochemical profile in epithelial, mesenchymal, and hematopoietic neoplasms using paraffin sections and monoclonal antibodies.

Glycoproteins isolated from human milk fat globule membranes, designated epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), have been detected immunohistochemically in most nonneoplastic epithelia and are potentially a highly effective marker for establishing the epithelial nature of neoplastic cells. With commercially available monoclonal antibodies and an indirect immunoperoxidase technique, EMA localization was evaluated in paraffin-embedded tissues from a wide variety of neoplasms (320 specimens). Adenocarcinomas from various primary sites (breast, lung, colon, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, prostate, en

Elevation of cancer antigen 15-3 owing to oncocytic renal neoplasm in a patient without evidence of breast cancer recurrence on follow-up: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cancer antigen 15-3 is a protein that clinicians commonly measure to monitor outcomes and response to treatment in patients with breast cancer. However, cancer antigen 15-3 can also be elevated in other, benign and malignant conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old White woman with history of breast cancer presented to her primary care physician with right hip pain, and laboratory testing revealed elevated cancer antigen 15-3. Further workup with radiographic imaging revealed a large mass in her right kidney. The renal mass was subsequently removed, and the cancer antigen 15-3

CD123-directed allogeneic chimeric-antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T) in blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN): Clinicopathological insights.

PURPOSE: Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a hematologic malignancy associated with overexpression of CD123. Allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T) directed against CD123 in BPDCN have been studied in clinical trials. We performed post-mortem analysis of a patient treated with anti-CD123 CAR-T to elucidate cause of death, development of cytokine release syndrome (CRS), and tissue distribution of UCART123 cells. METHODS: A post-mortem multidisciplinary clinicopathologic analysis was performed with digital droplet polymerase chain reaction of isolated blood a

Leukocyte common antigen--a diagnostic discriminant between hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic neoplasms in paraffin sections using monoclonal antibodies: correlation with immunologic studies and ultrastructural localization.

Immunohistochemical localization of human leukocyte common antigen (LCA), a major membrane glycoprotein restricted to leukocytes, was evaluated in paraffin sections of a wide variety of hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic tissues (294 specimens) with monoclonal antibodies (PD7/26 and 2B11). In nonneoplastic tissues, LCA was identified on B and T lymphocytes, with variable immunoreactivities for plasma cells and histiocytes. By light microscopy and ultrastructurally, LCA was localized predominantly to the cell membrane and was also present focally in the cytoplasm. Myeloid cells at all stages of

Serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 greater than 100 and risk of invasive carcinoma in pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms: Worrisome feature or high-risk stigmata?

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 was incorporated as a worrisome feature in the International Association of Pancreatology 2017 Fukuoka guidelines and is associated with an increased risk of invasive carcinoma. We compared the independent predictive value of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 >100 U/mL with other worrisome feature and high-risk stigmata to better delineate its utility and importance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent pancreatic resection for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms at a high-volume tertiary center in the U

Papillary eccrine adenoma. A light microscopic and immunohistochemical study.

The papillary eccrine adenoma is a rare benign sweat gland neoplasm characterized by a potentially locally aggressive clinical course. The light microscopic findings in two cases of this unusual neoplasm are discussed, with emphasis on the differential diagnosis of this tumor from other benign and malignant sweat gland neoplasms. Immunohistochemistry studies directed against various epithelial antigens were also performed. Immunoperoxidase stains positive for carcinoembryonic antigen, S-100 protein, and epithelial membrane antigen strongly support the hypothesis that this unusual neoplasm diff

CD7 Positive Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Arising in a Background of Follicular Lymphoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a neoplasm of large B-lymphocytes with a diffuse growth pattern. The neoplastic cells express B-cell markers such as CD20 and PAX-5 and there may be coexpression of BCL-2, BCL-6, CD10, and MUM-1. With the exception of CD5, other T-cell markers are not commonly expressed in this neoplasm. Here, we describe the first reported case of a DLBCL with abnormal expression CD7 arising in a background of follicular lymphoma in an 81-year-old male who presented with a nontender left axillary mass. Additionally, no other T-cell antigens were expressed in this B-cel

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia followed by high grade T-cell lymphoma. An unusual variant of Richter's syndrome.

A 70-year-old woman with a 2-year history of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) developed headache, fever, chills, and weakness. Bone marrow examination revealed both CLL and large cell immunoblastic lymphoma (Richter's syndrome). As expected, the CLL was of B-cell lineage. The neoplasm expressed low-density monotypic IgM lambda, the pan-B-cell antigens CD19, CD20, and CDw75, and the CD5 and CD43 antigens. The large cell immunoblastic lymphoma was of T-cell lineage, positive for the CD45RB, CD3, CD45RO, and CD43 antigens, and negative for the CD20 and CDw75 antigens. Both neoplastic com

Current concepts in primary effusion lymphoma and other effusion-based lymphomas.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a human herpes virus 8 (HHV8)-positive large B-cell neoplasm that presents as an effusion with no detectable tumor in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus infection or other immune deficiencies. PEL is an aggressive neoplasm with a poor prognosis. PEL cells show diverse morphologies, ranging from immunoblastic or plasmablastic to anaplastic. The immunophenotype of PEL is distinct, but its lineage can be misdiagnosed if not assessed thoroughly. PEL cells usually express CD45, lack B- and T-cell-associated antigens, and characteristically express lymph

Infiltration of plasma cells in colorectal adenocarcinoma associated with autoimmune encephalitis.

Paraneoplastic autoimmune encephalitis (PAE) represents a group of rare neurological syndromes associated with neoplastic diseases. Here, we report a case that multiple anti-neuronal antibodies were present in a patient with PAE who developed both small cell lung cancer and colorectal adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, the immunopathological investigation of the colorectal adenocarcinoma revealed the formation of abnormal neuronal antigens and a massive infiltration of plasma cells in the tumor tissue. These findings support the hypothesis that expression of neuronal antigens in neoplasm initiates a

Paraneoplastic Pemphigus and Autoimmune Blistering Diseases Associated with Neoplasm: Characteristics, Diagnosis, Associated Neoplasms, Proposed Pathogenesis, Treatment.

Autoimmune paraneoplastic and neoplasm-associated skin syndromes are characterized by autoimmune-mediated cutaneous lesions in the presence of a neoplasm. The identification of these syndromes provides information about the underlying tumor, systemic symptoms, and debilitating complications. The recognition of these syndromes is particularly helpful in cases of skin lesions presenting as the first sign of the malignancy, and the underlying malignancy can be treated in a timely manner. Autoimmune paraneoplastic and neoplasm-associated bullous skin syndromes are characterized by blister formatio
