Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is an alkylating agent used as a chemotherapy agent in the treatment of cancer, but it has immunosuppressive effects. Protium heptaphyllum (P. heptaphyllum) is a plant rich in triterpenes and flavonoids, with some bioactive and therapeutic properties presented in the literature. Two new benzodiaza-15-crown-5 compounds containing two N-hydroxycarbonylmethyl or N-hydroxycarbonylpropyl substitutes were synthesized. The first of these compounds exhibited more pronounced protective effects towards human cells according to criteria of primary DNA injury and cell survival after exposure to gamma-radiation and CdCl2; by antimutagenic activity this compound was comparable to garlic extract. The antimutagenic effect of these compounds was realized not through the antioxidant mechanism.

In this study, the antimutagenic function of the polysaccharide from Enteromorpha linza with the micronucleus test of Allium sativum root cells induced by sulfur dioxide and ultraviolet was studied. The induction of micronuclei by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and their reduction by the cardioprotective synthetic antioxidant, stobadine were studied in hamster V79 cells cultured in vitro. Clastogenic and anticlastogenic activity of glucocorticoid hormones hydrocortisone, prednisolone, and dexamethasone was studied by counting chromosome aberrations in Crepis capillaris test system. Hydrocortisone in a concentration of 12.5 mg/ml produced a clastogenic effect and increased the number of chromosome aberrations in comparison with spontaneous level. Hydrocortisone (6.25 and 3.13 mg/ml), prednisolone (15, 7.5, and 3.75 mg/ml), and dexamethasone (1, 0.5, 0.25, and 0.125 mg/ml) exhibited an anticlastogenic effect and reduced ethyl methanesulfonate-induced mutagenesis.

The biochemical mechanisms of genomoprotective action of the new derivatives of pyridinecarbonic acids--PV-3, PV-4 and PV-6 in the conditions of tetrachloromethane chemical cell damage have been studied. This effect is related to their antioxidant influence on LPO processes in transcriptionally active and repressed chromatin fractions of rat liver cells and partial restoration of these fractions structure which has been destroyed during intoxication. PV-4 possesses the most genoprotective activity among the substances studied.

BACKGROUND: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a malignancy derived from T cells infected with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), and it is known to be resistant to standard anticancer therapies. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a naturally occurring component of Brassica vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprout, is a promising chemopreventive agent as it is reported to possess antimutagenic, antitumorigenic and antiestrogenic properties in experimental studies. In vivo antigenotoxic activity of BP-C2 composition (at doses of 60, 80, and 120 mg/kg) based on polyphenolic compounds derived from hydrolyzed lignin was evaluated in mouse germ cells.
