This study investigated the relationship between the structural characteristics of the left arcuate fasciculus (AF) reconstructed using diffusion tensor image (DTI) and the type of fluent aphasia according to hemorrhage lesions in patients with fluent aphasia following intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). Five patients with fluent aphasia following ICH (three males, two females; mean age 55.0 years; range 47 to 60 years) and with sixteen age-matched heathy control subjects were involved in this study. The ICHs of patients 1 and 2 were located in the left parietal lobe and the left basal ganglia. ICH

Twenty-two subjects with presumed senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT), twenty-two with dementia other than SDAT, twenty with aphasia, and seventeen healthy controls over 50 years of age were examined for intrusions and perseverations. Perseverations were defined as the immediate inappropriate repetition of a prior response whereas intrusions were defined as the inappropriate repetition of prior responses after intervening stimuli. Intrusions and perseverations occurred in demented and aphasic subjects, but were rare in controls. Intrusions occurred most often in SDAT or Wernicke aph

Aphasia is an acquired language impairment, initially identified and described before the 19th century. According to traditional models (Wernicke-Lichtheim-Geschwind) the aphasic symptoms can be clustered into particular syndromes, such as Broca's, Wernicke's, Conduction aphasias, and more. Each syndrome is allegedly associated with a specific anatomical site. The major motivation for this model was to use the behavioral symptoms to learn about language and brain relationships. However, current advanced imaging techniques identify more precisely the loci of the deficit. Moreover, the model fre

OBJECTIVES: Global aphasia without hemiparesis (GAWH) is an uncommon stroke syndrome involving receptive and expressive language impairment, without the hemiparesis typically manifested by patients with global aphasia after large left perisylvian lesions. A few cases of GAWH have been reported with conflicting conclusions regarding pathogenesis, lesion localisation, and recovery. The current study was conducted to attempt to clarify these issues.
METHODS: Ten cases of GAWH were prospectively studied with language profiles and lesion analysis; five patients had multiple lesions, four patients

Three cases of slowly progressive fluent aphasia were presented. In all it began with word amnesia or stuttering, and in one to five years impairment of auditory comprehension, and reading and writing difficulties with kanji (Japanese morphograms) appeared. The neuropsychological and radiological findings were as follows: Case 1: a right-handed 65-year-old man showed severe fluent aphasia (the Western Aphasia Battery profile was rated as corresponding to Wernicke's aphasia but his score on the Token test was too high for Wernicke's aphasia) and memory disturbance. Cortical atrophy was prominen

Of all the nineteenth-century physicians whose names still resonate today, Armand Trousseau is perhaps the one most familiar, for his description of carpal spasm as a sign of hypocalcemia (Trousseau's sign) and his description of the hypercoagulable state associated with cancer (Trousseau's syndrome). In the last three years of his life, Trousseau turned his attention to aphasia, which he included in his 1864 and 1865 lectures given at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris and which he discussed in an address to the Imperial Academy of Medicine in 1865. Trousseau preceded Wernicke in describing aphasia

The very rare aphasia following damage to the right cerebral hemisphere in right-handed subjects is described, with a survey of the views on this problem and presentation of two cases of this so-called crossed aphasia in right-handed subjects. On one of these cases the lesion was cortico-subcortical in a part of the frontal lobe, temporal lobe and a part of the occipital lobe, with sparing of the deep structures of the right hemisphere and with clinical pattern resembling that of Broca aphasia. In the second case the lesion involved the subcortical and deep structures with destruction of the l

Wernicke's area has been assumed since the 1800s to be the primary region supporting word and sentence comprehension. However, in 2015 and 2019, Mesulam and colleagues raised what they termed the 'Wernicke conundrum', noting widespread variability in the anatomical definition of this area and presenting data from primary progressive aphasia that challenged this classical assumption. To resolve the conundrum, they posited a 'double disconnection' hypothesis: that word and sentence comprehension deficits in stroke-based aphasia result from disconnection of anterior temporal and inferior frontal

The influence of sex, age, educational level and pathologic lesion on incidence, severity and clinical form of aphasia was investigated in 390 right-handed, left brain-damaged patients. Sex and educational level were not related to any parameter. Etiology of lesion and age were related to both incidence and type of aphasia. Incidence of aphasia increased with age and was higher in patients with cerebrovascular accidents than in subjects with other types of brain lesions. Non-fluent forms of aphasia were more frequent in young patients suffering from acute cerebrovascular accidents, whereas ano

We introduce a case of a 66 year-old male with chronic alcoholism who suffered from confusion, Wernicke-aphasia and epileptic seizures. Several EEG revealed periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges. The patient's case resembles the symptoms of a subacute encephalopathy with epileptic seizures which can occur in alcoholics.

The concept of functional structures was introduced by Kepiński. At the Second Scandinavian Congress on Image Analysis in 1981 Kohonen provided evidence that the map of signals has the same topological order as the map of reactions. These topological concepts can be applied also to logical structures. The same is true also of functional structures described by Kepiński in schizophrenia, which may be created or destroyed, but their topological order remains unaltered. Functional structures change in obscuration and in hallucinogen-induced psychodelic states. Fixed pathological structures charac

We examined 33 patients with left intracerebral haemorrhage to investigate the relations to buccofacial apraxia (BFA). BFA was present in 18 cases at 1 month and disappeared in 3 cases and persisted in 15 cases at 6 month from the onset. The existence of BFA seems to be partially dependent the haematoma volume which may cause the organic damage in lenticulate nucleus, insula, posterior limb or internal capsule and anterior portion of paraventricle white matter. All patients with BFA had aphasia (Broca 6, Wernicke 1, Total 10, Amnestic 1). Aphasia of the patients with transient BFA improved as

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of specific brain lesions on prognosis and recovery of post-stroke aphasia, and to assess the characteristic pattern of recovery.
METHODS: Total of 15 subjects with first-ever, left hemisphere stroke, who were right handed, and who completed language assessment using the Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB) at least twice during the subacute and chronic stages of stroke, were included. The brain lesions of the participants were evaluated using MRI-cron, SPM8, and Talairach Daemon software.
RESULTS: Subtraction of the lesion overlap map o

Forty-one Spanish-speaking left-hemisphere-damaged patients were selected and divided into seven groups (transcortical, Broca's aphasia, conduction aphasia, Wernicke's aphasia, anomic aphasia, alexia without agraphia, and global aphasia). A reading battery composed of eight different subtests was given to each patient (reading of letters, reading of syllables, reading of pseudowords, reading of words, reading of sentences, understanding commands, reading and comprehension of texts, and logographic reading). Different types of reading errors were analyzed. Only in the logographic reading subtes

Three girls aged 9 to 11 years developed fluent aphasia associated with acute brain lesions. As localized by computed tomography, the abnormalities in all three resided in the posterior part of the left hemisphere, encroaching upon Wernicke's area.

"Funktionseinstimmungstraining--FET" (functional adaptation training) includes exercises aiming reorganization of verbal communication, improvement of capacity of concentration, vigilance, mental faculty over a longer period of time and memory. Following exact examination of speech deficits and accurate clinical-neuropsychological investigation, a certain program of training is established for each patient individually. Effects of FET might be diagnosed during the training-sessions as well as after the final set up of rehabilitation by means of objective data.

In this longitudinal recovery study of severe aphasia, subjects were tested five times at 6-month intervals with the Boston Assessment of Severe Aphasia (BASA), for a period of 2 years post onset. The majority of subjects had global aphasia (n = 17), but five had severe Wernicke's aphasia, and two had other varieties of severe aphasia. Significant improvements in communicative functions were noted for up to 18 months post onset, but the greatest improvement occurred in the first 6 months post onset. Most subjects did not change aphasia classification during the 2-year period. Initial individua

According to our clinical observations from various aspects of stroke patients, such as the total incidence of aphasia, the incidence of aphasia after left brain damage of the dextrals, the aphasia that occurs in patients without hemiplegia, and the types of aphasia, a much higher incidence of crossed aphasia is seen among the stroke patients of the Han (the largest ethnic group in China) as compared with the Uighur-Kazaks (U-K) in China and the Occidentals documented in the literature. Motor aphasia is most common and pure sensory or posterior aphasia is rarely seen in Han patients. The disti
