The association between oral behaviors, appetitive traits, and temporomandibular disorders - a matched case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) often impair mastication and quality of life. While oral behaviors are recognized as risk factors, the role of appetitive traits remains unclear. This study investigated associations among oral behaviors, appetitive traits, and TMDs. METHODS: A matched case-control design included 84 patients with TMDs and 84 age‑ and sex‑matched controls. Participants completed validated Chinese versions of the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC) and the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire. RESULTS: TMD patients demonstrated significantly higher waking‑state oral beha

Behavioral cross-sensitization between morphine-induced locomotion and sodium depletion-induced salt appetite.

In general terms, sensitization refers to the capacity of a repetitive stimulus of fixed strength to produce a progressive increase in the magnitude of a response with each stimulation. In the addiction literature cross-sensitization is the capacity of an agent with abuse potential to sensitize a behavioral response induced by another stimulus. In the present experiments we examined the effects of morphine pretreatment on furosemide-induced saline intake and conversely sodium appetite induction on morphine-induced locomotion. In an initial experiment rats were pretreated with morphine (10 mg/k

Effects of 4:3 Intermittent Fasting on Eating Behaviors and Appetite Hormones: A Secondary Analysis of a 12-Month Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Daily caloric restriction (DCR) is a common dietary weight loss strategy, but leads to metabolic and behavioral adaptations, including maladaptive eating behaviors and dysregulated appetite. Intermittent fasting (IMF) may mitigate these effects by offering diet flexibility during energy restriction. This secondary analysis compared changes in eating behaviors and appetite-related hormones between 4:3 intermittent fasting (4:3 IMF) and DCR and examined their association with weight loss over 12 months. METHODS: Adults with overweight or obesity were randomized to 4:3 IMF

Eating Behaviors, Appetite, and Childhood Obesity in Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study of Mothers' Perceptions and Prevention Approaches.

OBJECTIVE: In early childhood, packaged food consumption, screen-based sedentary behavior, and inconsistent parental feeding practices increase the risk of obesity. Mothers play a central role in shaping children's feeding environments. This study explored mothers' perceptions of eating and appetite behaviors in children aged 36 years, their feeding management strategies, and their evaluations of obesity risk within a cultural context. METHODS: A phenomenologically oriented qualitative design within an interpretiveconstructivist paradigm was employed. Fifteen mothers of children aged 36 years

Procedural separation of appetitive and consummatory behaviors in operant ethanol self-administration: A review and open-source analytical framework.

Despite decades of research, no new FDA-approved medications for alcohol use disorder (AUD) have emerged in over 25 years. Enhancing the translational relevance of preclinical models by more precisely capturing the behavioral and neurobiological features of AUD offers a promising path toward identifying novel therapeutic targets. Operant self-administration paradigms are essential for modeling voluntary ethanol intake in rodents, yet traditional approaches often confound appetitive (seeking) and consummatory (intake) behaviors. A biphasic sipper model developed by Hank Samson's laboratory addr

Effects of neuropeptide Y on appetitive and consummatory behaviors associated with alcohol drinking in wistar rats with a history of ethanol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Neuropeptide Y (NPY) reduces ethanol intake under free access conditions in Wistar rats with a history of prolonged ethanol vapor exposure. The current study was designed to determine whether NPY differentially alters ethanol-associated appetitive behavior (i.e., lever pressing) or ethanol consumption in Wistar rats with a history of ethanol vapor exposure. METHODS: Wistar rats were first trained to self-administer 10% ethanol in a paradigm that provided 25 min of free access to 10% ethanol after completing a 20-lever press response requirement (i.e., an RR20 schedule). After stab

Distinct CaMKII neurons in anterior cingulate cortex regulate anxiety-like behavior and appetite suppression in a model of inflammatory pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Inflammatory pain can lead to emotional abnormalities such as anxiety and a decreased appetite. However, the specific mechanisms underlying these abnormalities remain unclear. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which plays a crucial role in integrating nociceptive perception and emotional responses to chronic inflammatory pain, is an ideal region for studying how pain influences anxiety and appetite. METHODS: In this study, we employed a variety of techniques, including fiber photometry recordings, neuroanatomical tract tracing, optogenetics, pharmacogenetics, and behavi

Dangerous appetite: The impact of Trypanosoma cruzi infection on the feeding and defecation behaviors of Triatoma dimidiata sensu lato (Latreille, 1811).

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is primarily transmitted through the infected feces of blood-sucking bugs known as triatomines. As a result, its transmission is closely linked to the feeding and defecation behaviors of these insects. T. cruzi can alter various physiological processes in its vectors, including those involved in parasite acquisition, development, and excretion. This study aimed to assess the feeding and defecation behaviors of Triatoma dimidiata sensu lato (Latreille,1811), one of the main vectors, in relation to its T. cruzi infection statu

Effects of thyroxine and propylthiouracil on feeding behavior and the expression of hypothalamic appetite-regulating peptides and thyroid function in goldfish (Carassius auratus).

There is poor evidence for an association between thyroidal state, feeding and appetite regulation in fish. We assessed how an altered thyroid state influences feeding behavior, food intake and expression of hypothalamic appetite-regulating peptides (Klotho-α and Klotho-β; orexin, OX; cholecystokinin, CCK; agouti-related peptide, AgRP; cannabinoid receptor 1, CB1) in goldfish. We also measured the expressions of hypothalamic, pituitary and liver transcripts that regulate the thyroid [thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRH-R) type 1, thyroid stimulating

Appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors of female rats in bilevel chambers. II. Patterns of estrus termination following vaginocervical stimulation.

Copulation with intromission or manual vaginocervical stimulation (VCS) shortens the duration that intact female rats maintain lordosis responding during estrus. The present study examined whether VCS could shorten the duration of both appetitive and consummatory measures of female sexual behavior, and whether these effects occur differentially in time and across different hormone priming intervals. Ovariectomized, sexually experienced female rats were administered subcutaneous injections of estradiol benzoate 48 h and progesterone 4 h, before receiving 50 manual VCSs with a lubricated glass r

Appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors of female rats in bilevel chambers. I. A correlational and factor analysis and the effects of ovarian hormones.

This study investigated measures of sexual behavior displayed by female rats in bilevel chambers, the statistical relationships among the measures, and their dependency on hormone priming. Normative data from a standard 35-min test of sexual behavior were gathered from 82 fully primed sexually experienced Long-Evans females and subjected to multiple correlational and factor analyses. Several consummatory measures of copulation were related significantly, whereas appetitive level changing was statistically independent of consummatory measures. Factor analyses were conducted using orthogonal rot

The Impact of Appetite-Regulating Neuropeptide Leptin on Alcohol Use, Alcohol Craving and Addictive Behavior: A Systematic Review of Preclinical and Clinical Data.

AIMS: The appetite regulating hormone leptin, which is mainly secreted from adipose tissue, is an important regulator of food intake and modulator of reward-driven behavior. Leptin exerts its biological actions via binding to the leptin receptor, which is expressed in the hypothalamus, but also in the hippocampus, the amygdala and the substantia nigra. In the ventral tegmental area (VTA), leptin attenuates the firing rate of dopaminergic neurons that project to the Nucleus accumbens (NAc), which serves as relay to other brain areas of the "addiction network", such as the prefrontal cortex. Acute stress worsens the deficits in appetitive behaviors for social and sexual stimuli displayed by rats after long-term withdrawal from morphine.

RATIONALE: Negative affective states, e.g., anhedonia, are suggested to be involved in the long-lasting motivational processes associated with relapse. Here, we investigated whether anhedonic behaviors could be elicited by an acute stress after protracted abstinence from morphine. OBJECTIVES: The behavioral responses to natural stimuli following exposure to an acute stress were examined after 14 days of withdrawal from morphine. Male rats were pretreated with either a binge-like morphine regimen or daily saline injections for 5 days. The motivation for two natural stimuli, i.e., a social stim

Sudden Onset Disordered Eating Behaviors and Appetite Issues in a Local Clinical Cohort of Children With Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

OBJECTIVE: Abrupt onset restrictive food intake can be a cardinal symptom of pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). However, few reports detail eating restriction patterns and baseline eating behaviors in patients with PANS, which we aim to address. Additionally, we aim to compare PANS eating restriction with ARFID. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 130 patients with PANS, aged 4-18 years, presenting for initial assessment at Stanford's PANS/Immune Behavioral Health (IBH) Clinic. Data were abstracted from electronic medical records (EMR) and parent/child questionnaires w

Comparison of the effects of intracerebroventricular administration of glucagon-like peptides 1 and 2 on hypothalamic appetite regulating factors and sleep-like behavior in chicks.

Glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2, proglucagon-derived brain-gut peptides, function as anorexigenic neuropeptides in mammals. We previously showed that central administration of GLP-1 and GLP-2 potently suppressed food intake in chicks. GLP-1 and GLP-2 specifically activate their receptors GLP-1 receptor (GLP1R) and GLP-2 receptor (GLP2R), respectively in chickens. In adult chickens, GLP1R and GLP2R are expressed in different brain regions. These findings raise the hypothesis that both GLP-1 and GLP-2 function as anorexigenic peptides in the chicken brain but the mechanisms underlying th

Early social isolation in male Long-Evans rats alters both appetitive and consummatory behaviors expressed during operant ethanol self-administration.

BACKGROUND: Postweaning social isolation in rats produces profound and long-lasting cognitive and behavioral deficits in adult animals. Importantly, this housing manipulation alters sensitivity to a number of drugs of abuse including ethanol. However, most studies with ethanol have utilized continuous or limited home-cage access to examine interactions between juvenile social experience and drinking. More recently, social isolation was shown to increased ethanol responding in a "dipper" model of self-administration (Deehan et al., 2007). In the current study, we utilize a "sipper" operant self

Palatability of Goat's versus Cow's Milk: Insights from the Analysis of Eating Behavior and Gene Expression in the Appetite-Relevant Brain Circuit in Laboratory Animal Models.

Goat's (GM) and cow's milk (CM) are dietary alternatives with select health benefits shown in human and animal studies. Surprisingly, no systematic analysis of palatability or preference for GM vs. CM has been performed to date. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of short-term intake and palatability profiles of GM and CM in laboratory mice and rats. We studied consumption in no-choice and choice scenarios, including meal microstructure, and by using isocaloric milks and milk-enriched solid diets. Feeding results are accompanied by qPCR data of relevant genes in the energy balance-

Smartphone App-Based Eating Behavior Monitoring and Feedback Intervention for Glucocorticoid-Induced Appetite Increase in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Increased appetite and weight gain are common adverse effects of glucocorticoid therapy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Concerns about appearance-related changes due to weight gain can reduce medication adherence. Moreover, the complex interplay among glucocorticoids, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and appetite can influence eating behaviors. Daily data collection using ecological momentary assessment and analysis of interrelations may help clarify these dynamics. Furthermore, real-time feedback based on daily eating behavior may help patients regulate appet
