Eluates from façades at the beginning of their service time affect aquatic and sediment organisms.

Biocides are used in building materials to prevent microbial growth during storage (in-can preservatives) as well as after application (film preservatives). These compounds can leach out from the material into the environment and harm non-target organisms. In this study, the ecotoxicological effect of leachates at the beginning of a façade lifetime, on sediment and aquatic organisms was examined. For this purpose, leaching tests were carried out in the setting of a natural weathering experiment and a laboratory immersion with façade samples consisting of render/paint systems. The leaching expe

Trophic transfer and dietary exposure risk of mercury in aquatic organisms from urbanized coastal ecosystems.

In this study, 26 surface seawater samples, 26 surface sediment samples and 114 organisms were collected to study the trophic transfer and dietary exposure risk of mercury (Hg) in organisms from the Jiaozhou Bay, which is a typical semi-enclosed urbanized bay. The total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations did not exceed the threshold limits and performed as: fish > crustaceans > mollusks. The trophic level values (TLs) were less than 3 in all the groups, indicating simple structure of food chain. With the increasing δ15N value, THg and MeHg were significantly biomagnified in

sAC from aquatic organisms as a model to study the evolution of acid/base sensing.

Soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is poised to play multiple physiological roles as an acid/base (A/B) sensor in aquatic organisms. Many of these roles are probably similar to those in mammals; a striking example is the evolutionary conservation of a mechanism involving sAC, carbonic anhydrase and vacuolar H⁺-ATPase that acts as a sensor system and regulator of extracellular A/B in shark gills and mammalian epididymis and kidney. Additionally, the aquatic environment presents unique A/B and physiological challenges; therefore, sACs from aquatic organisms have likely evolved distinct kinetic prope

PAHs impacts on aquatic organisms: contamination and risk assessment of seafood following an oil spill accident.

Oil spills, intrinsically related to the petroleum production chain, represent a risk to the marine environment and a potential threat to humans through seafood consumption. We revised the NE Brazil oil spill and other accidents along the Brazilian coast, with a focus on seafood contamination, covering topics such as bioaccumulation, bioaccessibility, and risk analysis. Comprehensive knowledge of the impacts of spills helps in the interpretation of the dynamics of hydrocarbons released into the sea, contributing to actions to control their negative impacts. Currently, no legal limits have been

Environmental risk for aquatic and terrestrial organisms associated with drift from pesticides used in soybean crops.

Several countries included the assessment of environmental drift contamination risk for the registration of pesticides. This practice is not yet totality effective in Brazil; however, due to the large number of pesticides in use, it is important to identify the real contamination risk during pesticide spraying. Therefore, this study determined the indices of environmental risks for exposure to drift from terrestrial applications of fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides that are used in soybean crops under Brazilian climate conditions and established buffer zones for the application of these

Effect of polycyclic musk compounds on aquatic organisms: A critical literature review supplemented by own data.

Synthetic musk compounds are extensively used in personal care and cosmetic products around the world. Because they are not completely removed in sewage treatment plants, they eventually end up in aquatic environments. The aim of this review was to summarize published information on effects of polycyclic musks on aquatic organisms and to discuss whether the experimental design of toxicological studies involving these substances could influence the results obtained. With the exception of one study run in a flow-through system, all published toxicological studies on synthetic polycyclic musks ha

Effects of environmental temperature change on mercury absorption in aquatic organisms with respect to climate warming.

Because of global warming, the quantity of naturally generated mercury (Hg) will increase, subsequently methylation of Hg existing in seawater may be enhanced, and the content of metal in marine products rise which consequently results in harm to human health. Studies of the effects of temperatures on Hg absorption have not been adequate. In this study, in order to observe the effects of temperature changes on Hg absorption, inorganic Hg or methylmercury (MeHg) was added to water tanks containing loaches. Loach survival rates decreased with rising temperatures, duration, and exposure concentra

Toxicity of methylmercury in aquatic organisms and interaction with environmental factors and coexisting pollutants: A review.

Mercury is a hazardous heavy metal that is distributed worldwide in aquatic ecosystems. Methylmercury (MeHg) poses significant toxicity risks to aquatic organisms, primarily through bioaccumulation and biomagnification, due to its strong affinity for protein thiol groups, which results in negative effects even at low concentrations. MeHg exposure can cause various physiological changes, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, metabolic disorders, genetic damage, and immunotoxicity. To assess the risks of MeHg contamination in actual aquatic ecosystems, it is important to understand how MeHg interacts

Unexpected toxicity to aquatic organisms of some aqueous bisphenol A samples treated by advanced oxidation processes.

In this study, photocatalytic and catalytic wet-air oxidation (CWAO) processes were used to examine removal efficiency of bisphenol A from aqueous samples over several titanate nanotube-based catalysts. Unexpected toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) samples treated by means of the CWAO process to some tested species was determined. In addition, the CWAO effluent was recycled five- or 10-fold in order to increase the number of interactions between the liquid phase and catalyst. Consequently, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis indicated higher concentrations of some tox

c-di-GMP-Mediated Biofilm Regulation in Specific Spoilage Organisms: Mechanisms and Control Strategies in Aquatic Products.

Aquatic product spoilage primarily results from specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) such as Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and Shewanella, with biofilm formation playing a pivotal role in accelerating deterioration. The bacterial second messenger bis-(3'-5')-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) orchestrates this process by regulating biofilm assembly. Intracellular c-di-GMP levels, modulated by diguanylate cyclases (DGCs) and phosphodiesterases (PDEs), dictate bacterial behavior: higher concentrations suppress motility, promote adhesion, and trigger extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)

The use of growth and behavioral endpoints to assess the effects of pesticide mixtures upon aquatic organisms.

Aquatic communities are often subject to complex contaminant mixtures, usually at sublethal concentrations, that can cause long-term detrimental effects. Chemicals within mixtures can effectively interact, resulting in synergism, antagonism or additivity. We investigated the tertiary mixture effects of two pyrethroids, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin, and the organophosphate chlorpyrifos, evaluating sublethal endpoints; immobility and growth, on Chironomus dilutus in 10-day exposures. We utilized a toxic units (TU) approach, based on median lethal concentrations (LC50) for each compound. The

The mode of action of isocyanide in three aquatic organisms, Balanus amphitrite, Bugula neritina and Danio rerio.

Isocyanide is a potential antifouling compound in marine environments. In this study, we investigated its mode of action in three aquatic organisms. Two of them, the bryozoan Bugula neritina and the barnacle Balanus amphitrite, are major marine fouling invertebrates, and the other organism is the non-target species zebrafish Danio rerio. In the swimming larvae of B. neritina, isocyanide did not affect the total attachment rate (≤50 µg ml(-1)), but it did change the attachment site by increasing the percentage of attachment on the bottom of the container rather than on the wall or air-water int

Validation of a large volume-solid phase extraction methodology for biotoxicity assessment of pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms.

The growing scarcity of freshwater has intensified the need for alternative water sources, which often require advanced treatments to eliminate contaminants. Among emerging pollutants, pharmaceuticals have become a significant concern due to their persistence and potential impact, making their detection essential. However, analysing these contaminants is challenging due to the extremely low concentrations at which they are present. For chemical analysis, minimal or no sample enrichment is often necessary, while bioanalysis typically requires larger sample volumes and an enrichment factor to co

The Toxicity of Lead and Lead-Free Perovskite Precursors and Nanocrystals to Human Cells and Aquatic Organisms.

Halide perovskites have emerged at the forefront of semiconductor materials for photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. However, long-term stability and toxicity are the major barriers to their commercialization. In particular, the toxicity of lead (Pb) and its environmental impact have prompted the exploration of lead-free alternatives like tin (Sn) and bismuth (Bi). Herein, a cytotoxicity study of Pb-based perovskite (CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3) and a lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 nanocrystals in lung and liver cell lines and in blood cells are reported, revealing that both Pb and Bi exhibit mitogenic effec
