Trends and Opportunities in Tick-Borne Disease Geography.

Tick-borne diseases are a growing problem in many parts of the world, and their surveillance and control touch on challenging issues in medical entomology, agricultural health, veterinary medicine, and biosecurity. Spatial approaches can be used to synthesize the data generated by integrative One Health surveillance systems, and help stakeholders, managers, and medical geographers understand the current and future distribution of risk. Here, we performed a systematic review of over 8,000 studies and identified a total of 303 scientific publications that map tick-borne diseases using data on ve

Checklist of the tick (Acari: Argasidae, Ixodidae) species of Pakistan.

In developed and underdeveloped countries, ticks are important vectors transmitting various pathogens that cause diseases of veterinary and public health importance, like babesiosis, theileriosis, Crimean‑Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and many more. Many species of ticks have been reported in scientific literature from Pakistan, which need to be listed for ready reference. For this purpose, a checklist of tick species recorded in Pakistan is presented here after comprehensive review of the available literature on the subject. Overall, nine genera and 53 species of ticks infesting animals in

County-Scale Distribution of Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Continental United States.

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, is the primary vector to humans in the eastern United States of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, as well as causative agents of anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Its close relative in the far western United States, the western blacklegged tick Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls, is the primary vector to humans in that region of the Lyme disease and anaplasmosis agents. Since 1991, when standardized surveillance and reporting began, Lyme disease case counts have increased steadily in number and in geographical distribution in the eastern U

Mite dermatitis other than scabies.

Most mites are small, have mouth parts capable of puncturing, feed on tissue fluids, have a high reproductive rate, and are found in all habitats, including human skin. Mites are important causes of cutaneous diseases and are vectors of important infectious diseases. Mite bites should be considered whenever any unexplained cutaneous eruption is presented to the dermatologist. A knowledge of the biology of the mites that can attack humans is important when taking a history and for identifying the etiology. Treatment of the dermatitis is symptomatic, with a cure depending on the identification a

Experimental infection of Ornithodoros spp. ticks (Acari: Argasidae) with Yersinia pestis.

Ticks of the genus Ornithodors feed on many rodent species with known roles in maintaining and amplifying plague (Yersinia pestis) in nature. Five species of ticks in this genus are shown to acquire the plague bacillus by feeding on infected hosts. Most notably, 80% of O. hermsi Wheeler, Herms and Meyer harbored Y. pestis 1 mo after an infectious blood meal. Subsequent transmission by infected ticks was not demonstrated. However, 1 yr after the infectious feeding, Y. pestis DNA was detected using a hybridization probe on tick triturates that were amplified by in vitro cultivation. Y. pestis ca

The inability of a South African Babesia bovis vaccine strain to infect Boophilus microplus.

A strain of Babesia bovis that had been attenuated by rapid syringe passage through a series of 23 splenectomized calves was unable to infect its vector Boophilus microplus. An attempt to transmit the attenuated Australian Babesia bigemina G strain with a South African strain of B. microplus was likewise unsuccessful. The epidemiological implication of these observations in terms of babesiosis control is discussed.

Studies on a bovine Babesia transmitted by Hyalomma marginatum rufipes Koch, 1844.

A Babesia sp. was recently observed in Hyalomma marginatum rufipes and found to be transmissible to bovines. Further observations were carried out on this parasite and a study made of the morphology of stages in both erythrocytes and tick haemolymph. Apart from Babesia divergens, intra-erythrocytic parasites were not readily distinguishable from bovine Babesia spp. Merozoites in tick haemolymph morphologically resembled those of Babesia bigemina, but they were significantly larger. This Babesia sp. proved to be highly infective for adult H. m. rufipes, with transmission taking place transovari

[Transovarial and transspermal transmission of Coxiella burneti by the tick Hyalomma asiaticum and its role in the ecology of Q-rickettsiosis].

The transovarial transmission of C. burneti by the tick H. asiaticum was traced on three daughter generations during 751 days. The infection rate of the first generation ticks was found to be 5 times lower than that of the parental ones, of the second generations ticks--9 times lower while F3 population was characterized by 20 fold decrease in the infection rate. The transmission of C. burneti by the infected males of H. asiaticum to the females after copulation was observed in none of the 19 tests. Analysis of the material obtained has shown that the unrestrictedly long "vertical type" mainte

GENETIC AND IMMUNOLOGICAL EVIDENCES OF BORRELIA BURGDORFERI IN DOG IN THAILAND.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne zoonotic disease caused by spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted from animals to humans by the bite of infected ticks of the genus Ixodes. Although Lyme disease has been reported in China and Japan, the disease has never been reported in Thailand. Blood samples and ticks were collected from 402 dogs from 7 and 3 animal clinics in Chiang Mai and Phuket Provinces, Thailand, respectively. Blood samples were tested for antibodies against B. burgdorferi, Anaplasma spp, Ehrlichia spp and Dirofilaria immitis using a commercial kit, and positive blood samples

Louse and tick borne relapsing fevers.

Relapsing fever, caused by spirochaetes belonging to the genus Borrelia, was once the cause of worldwide epidemic zoonotic disease. This was largely through infection with the louse-borne form of the disease, caused by Borrelia recurrentis [(louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF)]. Another form of replasing fever is caused by Borrelia duttonii [(tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF)]. The introduction and the wide use of DDT in the last century, which is forbidden now, the incidence and prevalence of both LBRF and TBRF markedly decreased. However, with the increase of rapid transportation, crowdedness

Geographic range of vector-borne infections and their vectors: the role of African wildlife.

The role of African wildlife in the occurrence of vector-borne infections in domestic animals has gained renewed interest as emerging and re-emerging infections occur worldwide at an increasing rate. In Africa, biodiversity conservation and the expansion of livestock production have increased the risk of transmitting vector-borne infections between wildlife and livestock. The indigenous African pathogens with transboundary potential, such as Rift Valley fever virus, African horse sickness virus, bluetongue virus, lumpy skin disease virus, African swine fever virus, and blood-borne parasites ha

Physiologic and Genetic Factors Influencing the Zoonotic Cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Borrelia burgdorferi is a symbiont of ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. These ticks serve as vectors to disseminate the spirochete to a variety of susceptible vertebrate hosts, which, in turn, act as reservoirs for naïve ticks to become infected, perpetuating the infectious life cycle of B. burgdorferi. The pivotal role of ticks in this life cycle and tick-spirochete interactions are the focus of this chapter. Here, we describe the challenging physiological environment that spirochetes encounter within Ixodes ticks, and the genetic factors that B. burgdorferi uses to successfully infect, pe

Northward range expansion of Ixodes scapularis evident over a short timescale in Ontario, Canada.

The invasion of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis into Ontario, Canada poses a significant risk to public health because it is a vector for numerous pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Baseline field sampling in 2014 and 2015 detected I. scapularis and B. burgdorferi at sites across southern, eastern and central Ontario, including a hot spot in eastern Ontario. A "speed of spread" model for I. scapularis developed by Leighton and colleagues (2012) estimated that the tick's range was expanding northward at 46 km/year. In 2016, we r

[Borrelia miyamotoi: a recently identified human pathogenic tick-borne relapsing fever spirochete].

Borrelia miyamotoi is a recently described relapsing fever spirochete transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. This pathogen is different from Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the Lyme borreliosis spirochetes) in its epidemiology, ecology and also genetics. Over 50 patients have been described worldwide with Borrelia miyamotoi disease, and three immunocompromised patients were reported with neurological symptoms. Our knowledge about Borrelia miyamotoi infection in ticks and its distribution in different habitats and also the mechanism of the infection is limited. The most common sym
