Sera from 180 blood donors in Sierra Leone were examined by combined hemagglutination - inhibition, complement fixation, and neutralization tests for antibodies against 10 arbovirus. The donors were 20 to 40 years old and resident at Panguma, Tongo, Serabu and Segbwema. Thirty sera (16.6%) had antibodies to group B viruses, the majority of which were to yellow fever virus as confirmed by N tests. Nineteen sera had antibodies to Arumowot virus and 4 to Sindbis virus. N antibodies against UgMP 359, a non-group B virus, were demonstrated in 12 of the sera. No antibodies were found against Bwamba

OBJECTIVES: The increase in geographical spread of arboviruses and the incidence of arboviral diseases of humans is a rising public health concern, particularly in the context of ongoing population movements, climate change, and challenges to public health surveillance systems in countries where many of these viruses are endemic. We present here a scoping review and a synopsis of the existing literature on arboviruses that have been reported in Haiti, identify existing challenges in public health surveillance, and discuss the implications for Haiti, the Caribbean, and the Americas.

Arboviruses, arthropod-borne RNA viruses, are increasingly being recognized not only as causative agents of infectious diseases but also as promising tools in cancer therapy. Recent studies have demonstrated that certain arboviruses possess inherent oncolytic properties and can stimulate potent antitumor immune responses. This review critically examines the therapeutic potential of arboviruses in oncology alongside the key biosafety and translational challenges they present. Several members of the Flaviviridae, Reoviridae, Togaviridae, and Bunyaviridae families, such as Zika virus (ZIKV), Deng

Mosquito-borne arboviral diseases are a global concern and can have severe consequences on maternal, neonatal, and child health. Their impact on pregnancy tends to be neglected in developing countries. Despite hundreds of millions of infections, 90% pregnancies being exposed, scientific data on pregnant women is poor and sometimes non-existent. Recently and since the 2016 Zika virus outbreak, there has been a newfound interest in these diseases. Through various neuropathogenic, visceral, placental, and teratogenic mechanisms, these arbovirus infections can lead to fetal losses, obstetrical com

The objective of this chapter is to provide an updated and concise systematic review on taxonomy, history, arthropod vectors, vertebrate hosts, animal disease, and geographic distribution of all arboviruses known to date to cause disease in homeotherm (endotherm) vertebrates, except those affecting exclusively man. Fifty arboviruses pathogenic for animals have been documented worldwide, belonging to seven families: Togaviridae (mosquito-borne Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan equine encephalilitis viruses; Sindbis, Middelburg, Getah, and Semliki Forest viruses), Flaviviridae (mosquito-borne yel

Each spring large numbers of neotropical migrants traversing the Pacific flyway pass through the Coachella Valley enroute to northern destinations, providing an opportunity to test the hypothesis that mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses are introduced annually into California by migratory birds. A total of 5,632 sera were collected from 43 species of migrants during spring (April-June), of which 34 (0.61%) comprised of 14 species tested positive by enzyme immunoassay; only 10 were confirmed by plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNT). In addition, of 1,109 migrants comprised of 76 species

Mosquito-borne arboviruses are an important public health issue in Australia. The alphaviruses Ross River and Barmah Forest virus are widespread and active annually, and cause debilitating polyarthritis. The flaviviruses Murray Valley encephalitis, Kunjin and Japanese encephalitis virus are restricted in distribution and activity but may cause life-threatening illness, and dengue viruses are active in some areas.

Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo, Pelecaniformes) caught in southern Moravia (Czech Republic) in 1989-1990 were examined for arbovirus infections. Isolation experiments were carried out using blood samples of 56 birds. The results were negative. Serological examinations of 31 birds were performed by haemagglutination-inhibition test (HIT) using 5 arboviral antigens of the genera Alphavirus (Sindbis--SIN) and Flavivirus (tick-borne encephalitis--TBE, West Nile--WN) and of the family Bunyaviridae (Tahyna--TAH, Calovo--CVO). Antibodies were detected only to viruses SIN, WN and TAH at different fre

In 1980 and 1981, sera of 256 small wild mammals (rodentia, insectivora, carnivora) were collected in Piemonte and Southern Italy. They were then tested for antibody against 12 arboviruses by haemagglutination inhibition and complement fixation tests. In the North of the country, 42.8% of sera were found positive against Tahyna or Sicilian Sandfly fever viruses. In the Southern provinces, 44.3% of sera reacted with Bhanja, West Nile or other flaviviruses, Tahyna, Sicilian Sandfly fever and Arumowot viruses. These results lead to suspect the possible role of some small mammals (muridae, Clethri

The epidemiological role played by lemurs in the circulation of arboviruses in Madagascar has been studied. From serological (HAI) tests, exposure of lemurs to alphaviruses and flaviviruses appears to vary considerably with location and species of lemur; positive tests varied from 0 to 32%. Finally, the data concerning the lemurophilic part of the mosquito fauna suggests that some lemur species and man are infected by the same arboviruses, especially West Nile virus. The susceptibility of these primates to yellow fever virus, which has not yet occurred in Madagascar is under study.

As the result of our research work, 3 reference preparations have been first obtained and studied in accordance with all requirements of biological standardization. These preparations are the national standard of yellow fever antiserum and immune ascitic fluids (IAF) used as reference reagents: IAF to tick-borne encephalitis virus and IAF to Japanese encephalitis virus. The new preparations are stable, possess sufficient specific activity and can be used as standard preparations for the identification of the above-mentioned viruses.

The potential of triatomines to maintain arboviruses was demonstrated by the ability of Rhodinius prolixus with experimentally punctured abdomen to harbor Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus for at least 4 months and St. Louis encephalitis virus for 1 month. At 30 days after infection VEE virus was found at low titers in Trypanosoma cruzi-infected R. prolixus and at moderate titers in T. rangeli-infected R. neglectus. Transmission of VEE virus by bite of punctured bugs was successful 2 weeks after virus ingestion; attempts at 30 days failed.

One interesting aspect of mosquito-borne arboviruses is their endemic persistence, espeically during adverse climatic conditions in the temperate zones. The hypothesis that transovarial transmission of alpha- and flaviviruses by their respective mosquito vectors could serve as an overwintering mechanism has been proposed; however, experimental data in support of this hypothesis are not very convincing. Recently, some of the California encephalitis group arboviruses have been shown to be transmitted transovarially by Aedes species mosquitoes, and studies indicate that this mechanism contributes

Arboviruses are medically important arthropod-borne viruses that cause a range of diseases in humans from febrile illness to arthritis, encephalitis and hemorrhagic fever. Given their transmission cycles, these viruses face the challenge of replicating in evolutionarily divergent organisms that can include ticks, flies, mosquitoes, birds, rodents, reptiles and primates. Furthermore, their cell attachment receptor utilization may be affected by the opposing needs for generating high and sustained serum viremia in vertebrates such that virus particles are efficiently collected during a hematopha

The recent emergence or re-emergence of vector-borne diseases (VBD) and, more specifically, VBD associated with arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika or yellow fever are not new events. The globalization of trade and travels as well as the unplanned urbanization of many tropical and subtropical cities have created the conditions suitable for the establishment of vector mosquitoes offering opportunities for arbovirus introduction. This review describes the major arboviruses important for human health and their epidemic vectors, and the conditions leading to their emergence.

A great body of data on the fauna and ecology of wild mammals and their participation in the circulation of arboviruses were collected when the ecology of the latter of the Republic of Guinea was studied in 1978 to 1989. A hundred and eighteen species belonging to 10 orders were identified. Over 2,000 biological specimens were virologically and serologically examined. Six arboviruses were isolated. These included Dugbe virus (from the hussar monkey Cercopithecus (Erythrocebus patas) and 5 viruses from chiropters: Rift valley fever, from Micropteropus pusillus, Miniopterus schreibersi, and Hipp

Three arboviruses have already caused epidemics in various Pacific Island countries and territories, and currently represent a direct threat to public health. The diseases concerned are all mosquito-borne and should be kept under careful surveillance. Dengue fever, which is a worldwide major public health problem, is mainly transmitted in the Pacific by the Aedes aegypti vector but also by other mosquitoes of this genus with varying ranges. Epidemic polyarthritis due to the Ross River virus is endemic in Australia. At least one major epidemic has occurred in the Pacific where various vector mo
