A polyphasic taxonomic study was performed on an unidentified Arcanobacterium-like Gram-stain-positive bacterium designated strain C605018/01/1T isolated from a milk sample collected from the udder of a cow at post mortem. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the bacterium belonged to the genus Arcanobacterium and was most closely related to the type strain of Arcanobacterium pluranimalium (99.76 %); sequence similarities to all other Arcanobacterium species were below 97 %. The wet-lab DNA-DNA hybridization values among strain C605018/01/1T and A. pluranimalium DSM 13483ᵀ were low

A 14-year-old female pudu (Pudu puda) developed a uterine prolapse after unassisted parturition. The length of time between the prolapse and replacement of the organ was not known but was less than 24 hr. When the prolapse was first noticed, uterine tissue appeared undamaged and was immediately cleaned with antiseptic solution, handled carefully during replacement, and prophylactic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs were given. The pudu appeared clinically normal until 4 days postpartum, when she developed clinical signs of tenesmus, dysuria, and a purulent discharge from the vulva. Despit

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum causes pharyngeal and skin lesions but rarely causes severe systemic infections. An 80-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus was admitted for surgery of a left femoral neck fracture and right first toe ulcer. On day 19, chest radiography revealed a massive left pleural effusion.Pleural fluid culture grew Staphylococcus aureus and A. haemolyticum. The fluid was drained via a chest tube, and the patient was treated with cefazolin and clindamycin. Only four cases of pyothorax caused by A. haemolyticum have been reported, and no previous cases of A. haemolyticum pyotho

The objectives of this study were to describe the features of experimentally induced orchitis associated with Arcanobacterium pyogenes and confirm the pathogenicity of the organism for the ovine testicle. One testicle of each of nine rams was inoculated with 1.3 +/- 10(4) colony-forming-units of an A. pyogenes isolate and regular clinical, ultrasonographic, bacteriological and seminological examinations were carried out up to 204 days after challenge. The rams were sequentially euthanatized 3, 6, 9, 18, 30, 50, 71, 113 and 204 days after challenge and a gross- and histopathological examination

Arcanobacteriumhaemolyticum is an anaerobic, gram-positive bacillus most commonly associated with non-streptococcal pharyngitis. However, it is a rare cause of systemic infection and bacteremia. In this report, we present the case of a 39-year-old man diagnosed with A. haemolyticum bacteremia secondary to chronic osteomyelitis and an intraosseous abscess.

Arcanobacterium pyogenes, an opportunistic pathogen of economically important food animals, is the causative agent of liver abscesses in feedlot cattle, osteomyelitis in turkeys, and pneumonia and arthritis in pigs. Previous studies identified the first A. pyogenes adhesin, CbpA, a protein located on the bacterial surface which has the ability to bind collagen and promotes adhesion to the host cells. The protein has an N-terminal ligand-binding region (region A) and a C-terminal repetitive domain (region B). In this study we found that CbpA bound to almost all the collagen types tested but not

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (A. haemolyticum), a Gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, is typically associated with pharyngitis and skin infections but can also cause severe, life-threatening infections such as sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis (NF), particularly in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of severe NF of the lower extremity caused by a mixed infection with A. haemolyticum and Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) in a patient with diabetes mellitus. A 51-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with extensive swelling, necrosis, and bu

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum can cause deep infections, including osteomyelitis. In this study, an automated system misidentified this causal agent as Cellulomonas species but 16 s rRNA sequencing correctly identified it as A. haemolyticum. Recognizing the capability of A. haemolyticum to establish the disease is of great importance to enable accurate diagnosis and begin the suitable antibiotic therapy. Here we present the first case of successfully treated A. haemolyticum infective osteomyelitis in a 64-year-old Saudi patient with diabetes mellitus type 2 and review the characteristics of thi

We present a case of septicaemia caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum in a previously healthy 23-year-old man suffering from acute pharyngotonsillitis, who developed complicated Lemierre's syndrome. Three blood cultures (both aerobic and anaerobic) revealed the exclusive presence of A. haemolyticum. The presence of Fusobacterium necroforum was not essential for the development of this pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Lemierre's syndrome caused solely by A. haemolyticum. We confirm that this organism must be considered a potential pathogen in immunocompetent pat

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum is a Gram-positive, β-hemolytic emerging human pathogen that is classified into smooth or rough biotypes. This bacterial species is also a rare pathogen of animals. Smooth biotypes possess smooth colony edges, are moderate to strong in β-hemolysis, and predominately cause wound infections. In contrast, rough biotypes possess rough and irregular colony edges, have weak to no β-hemolytic activity, and predominately cause pharyngitis. Using horse erythrocytes we confirmed that smooth isolates are generally more hemolytic than rough isolates. A hemolysin from A. haemol

The aim of this survey was to study Koch's postulate of Arcanobacterium pyogenes recovered from the necrotic lung of a kid and to compare the immunogenicity of this isolate in local and imported Saanen goats. The disease was successfully reproduced in intrathoracically challenged hamsters which showed lung congestion and liver abscesses, while hamsters that were intraperitoneally challenged showed only the formation of intestinal abscesses. The percentage of histopathologic legions in 12 observed microscopic fields per lung of three groups of hamsters (unchallenged controls, challenged intrath

An 8-month-old, Nubian wether with a history of systemic illness was euthanatized for a pathological examination. At necropsy, the presence of disseminated abscessation and cellulitis in the limbs was noted. Other postmortem findings associated with the visceral disease in this animal included multiple abscess lesions, mainly in the lungs, kidneys, phalanxes and vertebrae. Histopathologically, lesions of arteriolitis were found as evidenced by bacterial embolisms in pulmonary and renal arteriola, indicating a bacteremia in the patient. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was consistently isolated from 8

The present study aimed to identify, determine the susceptibility, and detect gene cassettes of Arcanobacterium (Actinomyces) pyogenes isolates from cows with endometritis. Arcanobacterium pyogenes isolates were identified first by using the API Coryne Vit system test, and further through PCR. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of 23 antimicrobial agents against A. pyogenes were tested using standard broth microdilution assays according to the protocols of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The genes of integrons I and II were amplified by PCR using specific primers. Thirty-two A.

Slaughterhouses serve as critical surveillance hubs for identifying subclinical and economically important diseases in food-producing animals. Trueperella (Arcanobacterium) pyogenes, an opportunistic pathogen commonly found on the mucous membranes of livestock, is associated with mastitis, abortion, and suppurative infections such as abscesses. In this study, we investigated 30 pig carcasses fully condemned due to vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) at two slaughterhouses in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, between November 2023 and May 2024. From abscess lesions, 11 T. pyogenes strains were isolated and

Chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, and the macrolide, tylosin, are extensively used for growth promotion and disease prophylaxis in the cattle and swine industries in the US. Arcanobacterium pyogenes, a common inhabitant of the mucosal surfaces of cattle and swine, is also a pathogen associated with a variety of infections in these animals. A broth microdilution technique was used to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 48 A. pyogenes isolates to macrolides, lincosamides and tetracyclines. The MIC50 and MIC90 for chlortetracycline were 0.12 and 8 mg/l, respectively. Similarly, the MI
