Atlantification drives recent strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation.

The Arctic Ocean is the northern terminus of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), whose dense water masses are key to the global ocean circulation. The Arctic climate is rapidly changing, and it is not known how the Arctic Ocean overturning circulation is responding. Here, we use a high-resolution ocean reanalysis, corroborated by observations, to show that a poleward expansion of warm Atlantic waters and corresponding sea-ice loss, a phenomenon referred to as an "Atlantification" of the Arctic, has caused a poleward shift of the dense water source regions in recent decades

Can time-series of Landsat data be used to map the onset of growth at 78°N (central Svalbard)?

Mapping vegetation phenology in the high Arctic is critical for understanding ecosystem responses to rapid warming, but persistent cloud cover and low solar angles pose substantial challenges for optical satellite monitoring. We evaluated whether Landsat 8 can successfully map the start of growing season (SOS) at 78°N in Svalbard by developing spectral-based cloud detection algorithms tailored to Arctic conditions. From 17 images during the 2014 growing season, we generated cloud-free NDVI time series and extracted SOS dates at 30-m resolution across Adventdalen (Advent Valley). Validation aga

An evolutionarily distinct ringed seal in the Ilulissat Icefjord.

The Earth's polar regions are low rates of inter- and intraspecific diversification. An extreme mammalian example is the Arctic ringed seal (Pusa hispida hispida), which is assumed to be panmictic across its circumpolar Arctic range. Yet, local Inuit communities in Greenland and Canada recognize several regional variants; a finding supported by scientific studies of body size variation. It is however unclear whether this phenotypic variation reflects plasticity, morphs or distinct ecotypes. Here, we combine genomic, biologging and survey data, to document the existence of a unique ringed seal

Mercury and persistent organic pollutants in native and invading forage species of the Canadian Arctic: Consequences for food web dynamics.

Contaminant dynamics within Arctic marine food webs may be altered through the climate-driven northward invasions of temperate/boreal species. Here, we compare tissue concentrations of total mercury (THg) and legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in native versus invading forage species sampled from 2012 to 2014 near Arviat, Clyde River, and Resolute Bay, NU, representing, low, mid- and high eastern Canadian Arctic regions, respectively. Concentrations of THg, legacy Σ-polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB) and Σ-organochlorine (ΣOC) pesticides were detected in all forage species,

Novel Arctic colonization origin of the Arctic lineage in Phyllodoce (Ericaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Arctic flora is widely considered evolutionarily young, reflecting the emergence of unprecedentedly cold environments during the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene transition. Although many Arctic plants are thought to be derived from temperate alpine ancestors, the historical relationship between high-latitude occupancy and lineage divergence remains unclear. Specifically, it remains unclear whether Arctic lineages originated from ancestors that already occupied high-latitude regions before the Arctic environment formed or originated through colonization after the Arctic

Phylogenetic comparison of rabies viruses from disease outbreaks on the Svalbard Islands.

Periodic wildlife rabies epizootics occur in Arctic regions. The original sources of these outbreaks are rarely identified. In 1980, a wildlife epizootic of rabies occurred on the previously rabies-free Svalbard Islands, Norway. After this outbreak of rabies in the arctic fox population (Alopex lagopus), only single cases have been reported from the Islands over the following two decades. Phylogenetic characterization of four viruses isolated from infected arctic foxes from Svalbard from three different time periods suggest that the source of these epizootics could have been migration of this

First report of Toxoplasma gondii Seroprevalence in Farmed Arctic Foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in Eastern and Northeastern China.

Until now, no information on Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) was available in China. A serological survey was undertaken to assess T. gondii seroprevalence in farmed Arctic foxes in eastern and northeastern China. Antibodies to T. gondii were examined in 1346 farmed Arctic foxes using the modified agglutination test (MAT). A total of 113 (8.39%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 6.91-9.87) serum samples were positive to T. gondii at a 1:25 cutoff. Seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in male Arctic foxes was 8.68% (95% CI 6.75-10.6), which was higher than that in

Rabies and the Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus): A Review.

The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) is the primary infection reservoir of Arctic rabies, the dynamics of which are poorly understood and subject to significant spatiotemporal variation. Although rabies presence has been documented in the region since the mid-19th century, there is currently no evidence of rabies impacting Arctic fox population size. Under the influence of climate change in a rapidly evolving Arctic ecosystem, alterations in transmission dynamics are predicted, with implications for this species. Concurrently, the World Health Organization leads the United Against Rabies collective

[Genetic characterization of the rabies virus field isolates detected in Russian Federation within the period 2008-2011].

Sixty-three gene N fragments of rabies virus field isolates detected within the period 2008-2011 in different regions of Russian Federation were sequenced. The comparison with previously tested isolates and strains has shown that newly isolated isolates can be placed into five previously described phylogenetic groups: Arctic group, Central Russian group, Eurasian group, Northern European group, and Caucasian group. The Arctic group isolates detected in Komi republic were identical to previously described rabies virus strain from Yakutia. This is the first reliable case of detecting Arctic grou

Epidemiology of Trichinella in the Arctic and subarctic: A review.

The finding of Trichinella in the Arctic was foreseen because captive polar bears and arctic foxes had been found infected during the first decades of the 20th century. Human trichinellosis outbreaks were reported to have taken place in 1944 in Franz Josef Archipelago and 1947 in Greenland, and previous outbreaks in Greenland also appeared to have been trichinellosis. Now, it is known that Trichinella parasites thrive in the Arctic and subarctic and pose a risk for public health. We collated the available information, which show that infection prevalences are high in many animal host species,

Trichinella nativa in Iceland: an example of Trichinella dispersion in a frigid zone.

In most Arctic and subarctic regions, Trichinella nativa is a common zoonotic pathogen circulating among wild carnivores. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is one of the most important reservoirs for T. nativa in frigid zones. In Iceland, Trichinella infection has never been detected in the local wildlife, despite the presence of one of the host species, the arctic fox (Alopex lagopus). In 2008, one of two polar bears that had swum to Iceland's coast was found to have been infected with Trichinella sp. (8.5 larvae/g in the tongue, 6.8 larvae/g in the masseter and 4.4 larvae/g in the diaphragm);

Spaceborne Observations of Lightning NO2 in the Arctic.

The Arctic region is experiencing notable warming as well as more lightning. Lightning is the dominant source of upper tropospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are precursors for ozone and hydroxyl radicals. In this study, we combine the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with Vaisala Global Lightning Dataset 360 to evaluate lightning NO2 (LNO2) production in the Arctic. By analyzing consecutive TROPOMI NO2 observations, we determine the lifetime and production efficiency of LNO2 during the summers of 2019-2021. Our results show that the

The first Boreal Sable (Martes zibellina, L., 1758) in the Pleistocene Arctic Siberia.

This study reports on the first Mustelidae find from the Arctic (NE Yakutia) sealed in intact Pleistocene cryolithic beds. A morphological analysis of semi-adult male sable remains-cranium and dentalia-shows a close affinity with the modern subspecies Martes zibellina jenisseensis. Absence of damage and attrition of the bone surface indicate in-situ burial of the ancient cadaver prior to soft-tissue decomposition. Just minor signs of microbial decay and post-mortem diagenesis changes in the osteological structure of the well-preserved skull and maxilla are consistent with long-term deep freezi

Reindeer eyes seasonally adapt to ozone-blue Arctic twilight by tuning a photonic tapetum lucidum.

Reindeer are the only mammal known to seasonally adapt their eyes to the extremely blue colour of the extended twilight that occupies a large part of the winter 24 h cycle in their Arctic habitat. We describe the atmospheric phenomenon that results in this extreme spectral change in light environment. Reflectance spectroscopy is used to characterize the photonic nanostructure that generates the reflective region of the tapetum lucidum behind the retina. A model is proposed to explain the reversible reformatting of the reflector by seasonal changes in the volume of interstitial fluid within the

Pulsed resources at tundra breeding sites affect winter irruptions at temperate latitudes of a top predator, the snowy owl.

Irruptive migration is mostly observed in species specialized on pulsed resources and is thought to be a response to unpredictable changes in food supply. We assessed two alternative hypotheses to explain the periodic winter irruptions of snowy owls Bubo scandiacus every 3-5 years in temperate North America: (a) the lack-of-food hypothesis, which states that a crash in small mammal abundance on the Arctic breeding grounds forces owls to move out of the tundra massively to search for food in winter; (b) the breeding-success hypothesis, which states that high abundance of tundra small mammals du

Constraints on Arctic Atmospheric Chlorine Production through Measurements and Simulations of Cl2 and ClO.

During springtime, unique halogen chemistry involving chlorine and bromine atoms controls the prevalence of volatile organic compounds, ozone, and mercury in the Arctic lower troposphere. In situ measurements of the chlorine monoxide radical, ClO, and its precursor, Cl2, along with BrO and Br2, were conducted using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) during the Bromine, Ozone, and Mercury Experiment (BROMEX) near Barrow, Alaska, in March 2012. To our knowledge, these data represent the first ClO measurements made using CIMS. A maximum daytime ClO concentration of 28 ppt was observed f
