An extragenic fix for a broken enzyme.

In this work, we show how exploration of genomic sequence space yields an unexpected evolutionary 'fix' that allows the cell to bypass the phenotypic defects associated with a dysfunctional enzyme. We identified a transposon (Tn) insertion in the gene (argA) encoding N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS) that leads to arginine auxotrophy in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This Tn insertion generates a truncated version of the ArgA protein (ArgA188-432) that retains NAGS activity but, unlike the wild-type protein, is unrestrained by arginine feedback inhibition. However, the Tn::argA mutant readily re-acqu

[The tick fauna of eastern Germany].

The occurrence of several tick species in selected areas of Eastern Germany is described. From May 1987 till December 1989 8,472 ticks from 430 places were examined. Ixodidae of the genus Ixodes, Dermacentor and Haemaphysalis as well as Argasidae of the genus Argas were identified. The most common species was Ixodes ricinus. Furthermore, an endemic area of Dermacentor reticulatus was detected in the Düben-Dahlen and Annaburg health. Two other species of ticks, which were found frequently and sometimes with a high intensity on the host were Ixodes hexagonus and Ixodes canisuga. On the other sid

A higher infection rate of Toxoplasma gondii in soft ticks infesting domestic hens: A novel report from Pakistan.

Ticks are the second most important hematophagous ectoparasites after mosquitoes and serve as vectors for various pathogens, transmitting them to wild and domestic animals, as well as humans. Argas persicus are the soft ticks that are known to parasitize domestic poultry. Hard ticks are known to be the reservoir of Toxoplasma (T.) gondii but limited such information is available for soft ticks. This study reports the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic analysis of T. gondii infecting Argas (A.) persicus ticks (N = 70), collected from four domestic poultry breeds in the Kurram District, Khybe

Argasid ticks as possible vectors of West Nile virus in Israel.

Mites and soft ticks collected directly from wild and domestic birds and their nests were tested for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV). The cattle egret argas, Argas arboreus, was collected from the nests of seven cattle egret colonies. Out of 1,000 A. arboreus pools examined, 16 were positive for WNV based on RT-PCR technique. The positive pools were from four nesting colonies of birds. Out of 37 cattle egret squabs examined, 37.8% had serum-neutralizing antibodies to WNV. WNV RNA was also detected in one out of 15 pools of R. turanicus, in one out of 21 pools of O. sylviarum, and in one

A novel brominated chalcone derivative as a promising multi-target inhibitor against multidrug-resistant Listeria monocytogenes.

Foodborne pathogens continue to challenge public health due to their ability to cause severe illness and their increasing resistance to current antimicrobial treatments. Listeria monocytogenes is a resilient foodborne pathogen that poses significant risks to vulnerable populations, leading to severe infections and high hospitalization rates. The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of L. monocytogenes underscores the need for novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial efficacy of the (2E)-3-(3,5-dibromo-2-hydroxylphenyl)-1-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)

Tourist attractions of southern Poland – risk of tick infestation and exposure to tick-borne diseases.

The southern region of Poland, rich in natural and tourist attractions, encourages outdoor recreation and spending time in nature. Ongoing climate change, including global warming, has contributed to an increased abundance of ticks and an extended period of their seasonal activity. Consequently, the number of tick-borne disease cases continues to rise, and their diagnosis and treatment are often challenging and prolonged. The aim of this study is to summarize current knowledge on the occurrence of ticks in tourist areas of southern Poland and to raise public health awareness among individuals

Ticks of Australia. The species that infest domestic animals and humans.

The book Australian Ticks by F.H.S. Roberts (1970) is a land-mark in Australian tick biology. But it is time for a new and improved book on the ticks of Australia. The present book has identification guides and accounts of the biology and diseases associated with the 16 species of ticks that may feed on domestic animals and humans in Australia. These comprise five argasid (soft) ticks: Argas persicus (poultry tick), Argas robertsi (Robert's bird tick), Ornithodoros capensis (seabird soft tick), O. gurneyi (kangaroo soft tick), Otobius megnini (spinose ear tick); and 11 ixodid (hard) ticks, Amb

First data on bacteria associated with bat ectoparasites collected in Kharkiv oblast, Northeastern Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) serve as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens worldwide, including vector-borne pathogens. However, bat-associated parasitic arthropods and their microbiota are thus far not thoroughly described in many regions across the globe, nor is their role in the spillover of pathogens to other vertebrate species well understood. Basic epidemiological research is needed to disentangle the complex ecological interactions among bats, their specific ectoparasites and microorganisms they harbor. Some countries, such as Ukraine, are particularly data-deficien

[Farm animals as disease vectors of parasitic epizoonoses and zoophilic dermatophytes and their importance in dermatology].

Different pest arthropods and dermatophytes occurring primarily in farm animals may be transmissible to man and produce human dermatoses. The movement and cutaneous penetration habits of external parasites often cause crusted papules, severe itching and dermatitis or may damage their hosts by blood-sucking or by sensitizing them to their saliva. Furthermore different dermatophytes should be considered a possible cause of human skin lesions. Farm animals (cattle, pig, poultry, and rabbit) can transmit external parasites (ticks: Ixodes ricinus, Argas reflexus; fleas: Ceratophyllus gallinae, Spil
