Presence of alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase enzymes in dental and oral epithelium of guinea pig embryos.

This study examines the distribution of alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase enzymes in reduced enamel epithelium, i.e., post secretory ameloblasts (PSA) and external cells of reduced enamel epithelium (ERE) of continuously growing incisor and molar tooth germs and in the covering oral epithelium (OE). Jaws of guinea pig embryos, 25-50 days of gestation age, were pretreated, frozen, serially cut, and incubated with alpha-naphthyl acetate as substrate and hexazotized pararosaniline as capture agent for demonstration of enzyme activity. In addition, sections were preincubated with various inhibitors

From Atoxyl to Salvarsan: searching for the magic bullet.

March 15th of 2004 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Paul Ehrlich. He was the founder of modern chemotherapy and in fact coined the word and invented the science of chemical therapy. He and his chemist Al fred Bertheim were the first people to do three things: (1) identify a substance, either man-made or from natural products, which showed promise in killing certain invading organisms; (2) determine the correct structure of the active compound in this substance, and (3) modify the chemical structure of this compound to make it more potent to invading organisms and less harmful to th

Labyrinthectomy abolishes the behavioral and neural response of rats to a high-strength static magnetic field.

Vertigo is a commonly-reported side effect of exposure to the high magnetic fields found in magnetic resonance imaging machines. Although it has been hypothesized that high magnetic fields interact with the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear, there has been no direct evidence establishing its role in magnet-induced vertigo. Our laboratory has shown that following exposure to high magnetic fields, rats walk in circles, acquire a conditioned taste aversion (CTA), and express c-Fos in vestibular and visceral relays of the brainstem, consistent with vestibular stimulation and vertigo or motion

Unusual 4-arsonoanilinium cationic species in the hydrochloride salt of (4-aminophenyl)arsonic acid and formed in the reaction of the acid with copper(II) sulfate, copper(II) chloride and cadmium chloride.

Structures having the unusual protonated 4-arsonoanilinium species, namely in the hydrochloride salt, C6H9AsNO3+·Cl-, (I), and the complex salts formed from the reaction of (4-aminophenyl)arsonic acid (p-arsanilic acid) with copper(II) sulfate, i.e. hexaaquacopper(II) bis(4-arsonoanilinium) disulfate dihydrate, (C6H9AsNO3)2[Cu(H2O)6](SO4)2·2H2O, (II), with copper(II) chloride, i.e. poly[bis(4-arsonoanilinium) [tetra-μ-chlorido-cuprate(II)]], {(C6H9AsNO3)2[CuCl4]}n, (III), and with cadmium chloride, i.e. poly[bis(4-arsonoanilinium) [tetra-μ-chlorido-cadmate(II)]], {(C6H9AsNO3)2[CdCl4]}n, (IV),

Ethovision™ analysis of open field behaviour in rats following bilateral vestibular loss.

Bilateral vestibular loss (BVL) causes a unique behavioural syndrome in rodents, with symptoms such as locomotor hyperactivity and changes in exploratory behaviour. Many of these symptoms appear to be indirect consequences of the loss of vestibular reflex function and are difficult to explain. Although such symptoms have been reported before, there have been few systematic studies of the effects of BVL using automated digital tracking systems in which many behavioural symptoms can be measured simultaneously with high precision. In this study, data were obtained from rats with BVL induced by in

Vestibular loss promotes procedural response during a spatial task in rats.

Declarative memory refers to a spatial strategy using numerous sources of sensory input information in which visual and vestibular inputs are assimilated in the hippocampus. In contrast, procedural memory refers to a response strategy based on motor skills and familiar gestures and involves the striatum. Even if vestibular loss impairs hippocampal activity and spatial memory, vestibular-lesioned rats remain able to find food rewards during complex spatial memory task. Since hippocampal lesions induce a switch from declarative memory to procedural memory, we hypothesize that vestibular-lesioned

Evaluation of hepatotoxicity of chemicals using hepatic progenitor and hepatocyte-like cells derived from mouse embryonic stem cells: effect of chemicals on ESC-derived hepatocyte differentiation.

Embryonic stem cell testing is an alternative model system to assess drug and chemical toxicities because of its similar developmental characteristics with in vivo embryogenesis and organogenesis. This study evaluated the toxicity of chemicals at specific developmental stages of mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC)-derived hepatic differentiation; hepatic progenitor cells (HPCs), and hepatocyte-like cells (HCs). The toxic effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and arsanilic acid (Ars) were evaluated by measuring the expressions of Cytokeratin (CK18) and GATA binding protei

[Sleeping sickness: one hundred years of control strategy evolution].

Sleeping sickness has been known since the fifteenth century but the real progress in the knowledge of the disease occurred in the nineteenth century with the development of microscopy. From 1841 to 1901 the parasites and their vectors have been identified, the symptomatology and the epidemiology have been described. However, due to absence of any effective cure, the campaign against the disease was still based on the isolation of the patients and the transfer of exposed populations. The discovery of atoxyl in 1905 provided doctors with their first therapeutic weapon and, in 1910, the first ac

Vestibular-mediated increase in central serotonin plays an important role in hypergravity-induced hypophagia in rats.

Exposure to a hypergravity environment induces acute transient hypophagia, which is partially restored by a vestibular lesion (VL), suggesting that the vestibular system is involved in the afferent pathway of hypergravity-induced hypophagia. When rats were placed in a 3-G environment for 14 days, Fos-containing cells increased in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, the central nucleus of the amygdala, the medial vestibular nucleus, the raphe nucleus, the nucleus of the solitary tract, and the area postrema. The increase in Fos expression was completely abolished or significantly suppress
