Hepatic venoocclusive disease and perisinusoidal fibrosis secondary to arsenic poisoning.

Hepatic injury secondary to arsenic poisoning has been known long but is poorly documented. A case of a patient with hepatic injury following severe arsenic poisoning is reported. Histological study of the liver demonstrated acute venoocclusive disease and perisinusoidal fibrosis. This case indicates that arsenic poisoning causes veno-occlusive disease in humans. It also suggests that hepatic damage in arsenic poisoning is secondary to vascular endothelial injury and supports the hypothesis that different patterns of hepatic vascular injury might proceed from a common mechanism.

Chronic Arsenic Poisoning Probably Caused by Arsenic-Based Pesticides: Findings from an Investigation Study of a Household.

In addition to naturally occurring arsenic, man-made arsenic-based compounds are other sources of arsenic exposure. In 2013, our group identified 12 suspected arsenicosis patients in a household (32 living members). Of them, eight members were diagnosed with skin cancer. Interestingly, all of these patients had lived in the household prior to 1989. An investigation revealed that approximately 2 tons of arsenic-based pesticides had been previously placed near a well that had supplied drinking water to the family from 1973 to 1989. The current arsenic level in the well water was 620 μg/L. No oth

Acute arsenic poisoning from realgar water: Case series from Guilin, China.

BACKGROUND: The inappropriate use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) poses significant health risks. Realgar (As4S4), an arsenic-containing mineral traditionally consumed during China's Dragon Boat Festival, may induce acute toxicity following ingestion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case series describes 8 patients (age: 1 - 80 years), including 2 children, with clinically confirmed acute arsenic poisoning subsequent to Dragon Boat Festival ingestion of realgar-containing water. We systematically evaluated clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, and environmental arsenic concentrati

Acute arsenic exposure secondary to deliberate self-poisoning with sheep dip.

A 53-year-old male patient presented to a regional hospital Emergency Department approximately 2 h post an intentional ingestion of Coopers Instant Wetting Powder Sheep Dip (66% arsenic trioxide, 23% sulphur and 0.42% rotenone), mixed in 600 mL water, as a suicide attempt. On arrival to the Emergency Department, the patient had nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Seven hours post ingestion, hypotension developed (BP 90/60 mmHg) and intravenous fluids were commenced. He later developed QTc prolongation. He was treated with 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) and N-acetylcysteine and improv

Arsenic poisoning in groundwater: health risk and geochemical sources in Bangladesh.

Of the 2508 water samples analyzed in 10 districts of Bangladesh, 51%, on an average, contained arsenic levels of 0.05 to 2.50 mg/l. 95% of nail, 96% of hair, and 94% of urine samples contained arsenic above the normal level. Approximately 3.58 million people out of a total of 17.92 million who are drinking water containing arsenic levels >0.20 mg/l are potentially exposed to high risk of health hazard. Eight thousand and five hundred arsenic patients are identified; they are suffering from various skin lesions, gangrene in leg, skin, lung, bladder, liver, and renal cancer. A big portion of th

An analysis of arsenic exposures referred to the Blodgett Regional Poison Center.

Fifty-seven cases of acute arsenic exposure were referred to Blodgett Regional Poison Center from January 1985 through December 1985. We will summarize epidemiologic aspects, laboratory values and the types of arsenicals involved. Cases predominantly involved children ingesting sodium arsenate in the form of ant poison. A great majority were accidental exposures related to the home use of ant killers in contrast to previous reports of homicidal or industrial poisoning. Initial urine arsenic levels, symptoms and therapy will be included. Most cases were reported within hours with patients being

Peripheral vascular diseases resulting from chronic arsenical poisoning.

Drinking water contaminated by arsenic remains a major public health problem. Long-term arsenic exposure has been found to be associated with peripheral vascular diseases in a variety of studies. Reports of vascular effects of arsenic in drinking water, which span almost 100 years, have been published in Taiwan, Chile, Mexico, and China. This paper reviewed the association of peripheral vascular diseases resulting from arsenic exposure to drinking water from the clinical and pathological points of view. An endemic peripheral vascular disorder called "blackfoot disease" has been noticed in a li

An epidemiological study on cancer in certified arsenic poisoning patients in Toroku.

A mortality study has been made to assess the carcinogenic effect of arsenic exposure by analyzing a group of certified chronic arsenic poisoning patients at a small mining village in Japan. When compared with expected number of deaths, based on sex-, age-specific mortality of Japanese in 1975, '80 and '85, all cancer, cancer of respiratory system and cancer of bladder, kidney and other and unspecified urinary organs showed a significant excess over the expected number. Divided by employment history, death due to all cancers, to respiratory cancer and to urinary tract cancer showed a significa

Four cases of fatal acute arsenic poisoning: histopathology, toxicology, and new trends.

Arsenic is a valuable component in tumor treatment and traditional Chinese medicine and has seen widespread use in processing, manufacturing, and agriculture. Although rare, arsenic poisoning can occur in forensic practice. Elusive pathological changes, as well as obscure clinical signs, may cause arsenic poisoning to go unrecognized. Here, we report four cases of fatal acute arsenic poisoning, with careful observation of pathological changes and collection of postmortem specimens for arsenic concentration analysis. Additionally, we reviewed six cases of fatal arsenic poisoning in the past 20

Current status and prevention strategy for coal-arsenic poisoning in Guizhou, China.

Arsenic exposure from burning coal with high arsenic contents occurs in southwest Guizhou, China. Coal in this region contains extremely high concentrations of inorganic arsenic. Arsenic exposure from coal-burning is much higher than exposure from arsenic-contaminated water in other areas of China. The current status and prevention strategies for arsenic poisoning from burning high-arsenic coal in southwest Guizhou, China, is reported here. Over 3,000 arsenic-intoxicated patients were diagnosed based on skin lesions and urinary arsenic excretion. Non-cancerous toxicities and malignancies were

Acute poisoning with a herbicide containing imazapyr (Arsenal): a report of six cases.

BACKGROUND: Acute pesticide poisoning is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Taiwan and herbicides are most frequently implicated. Imazapyr [2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2 imidazoline-2-yl)nicotinic acid] is a new herbicide, recently registered in Taiwan under the tradename "Arsenal" (Imazapyr 23.1%, Cyanamid Taiwan Corporation, Taipei). Imazapyr is also marketed as Assault, Chopper, Contain, and Pivot. To the best of our knowledge, there is no information in the literature concerning acute toxicity in humans after ingestion of herbicides containing this compound. METHOD: Six cases o

Acute arsenic self-poisoning for suicidal purpose in a dentist: a case report.

Arsenic is a classical poison that has been historically used since ancient times for homicidal purposes. More recently, episodes of deliberate or unintentional arsenic self-poisoning have been increasingly reported. We describe here a case of a 77-year old male patient with a history of major depression, who attempted suicide by ingestion of 4 g of arsenic trioxide. The man, a dentist by profession, used arsenic preparations for pulp devitalization. The patient was admitted to our hospital 5 h after arsenic ingestion with nausea and vomiting. Plain radiograph of the abdomen showed radio-opaqu

Strategies for safe and effective therapeutic measures for chronic arsenic and lead poisoning.

Exposure to toxic metals remains a widespread occupational and environmental problem in world. There have been a number of reports in the recent past suggesting an incidence of childhood lead poisoning and chronic arsenic poisoning due to contaminated drinking water in many areas of West Bengal in India and Bangladesh has become a national calamity. Low level metal exposure in humans is caused by air, food and water intake. Lead and arsenic generally interferes with a number of body functions such as the central nervous system (CNS), the haematopoietic system, liver and kidneys. Over the past

Chronic arsenic poisoning in the rat: treatment with combined administration of succimers and an antioxidant.

The influence of the coadministration of vitamin C or vitamin E on the efficacy of two thiol chelators, meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) or monoisoamyl DMSA, in counteracting chronic arsenic toxicity was investigated in rats. Vitamin C and vitamin E were only mildly effective when given alone or in combination with the above chelators in mobilizing arsenic from the target tissues. However, combined administration of vitamin C plus DMSA and vitamin E plus MiADMSA led to a more pronounced depletion of brain arsenic. The supplementation of vitamins was significantly effective in restoring

Aberrant methylation of nucleotide excision repair genes is associated with chronic arsenic poisoning.

OBJECTIVE: To define whether aberrant methylation of DNA repair genes is associated with chronic arsenic poisoning. METHODS: Hundred and two endemic arsenicosis patients and 36 healthy subjects were recruited. Methylight and bisulfite sequencing (BSP) assays were used to examine the methylation status of ERCC1, ERCC2 and XPC genes in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) and skin lesions of arsenicosis patients and NaAsO2-treated HaCaT cells. RESULTS: Hypermethylation of ERCC1 and ERCC2 and suppressed gene expression were found in PBLs and skin lesions of arsenicosis patients and was correlate
