Popliteal trauma requires particular attention because blood vessel injuries in that zone might cause serious complications. Popliteal traumatic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) should be considered for serious leg amputation, and long-standing fistulae produce cardiac overload. The diagnosis is usually made after clinical examination, finding palpable thrill and audible bruit over the injury site, and is confirmed after duplex ultrasonography and/or angiography. We present a case of popliteal traumatic arteriovenous fistula with false aneurysm (pseudoaneurysm) (PSA), in which duplex ultrasonograph…

BACKGROUND: Uterine arteriovenous communications are uncommon lesions that may be associated with life-threatening postpartum and postinstrumentation hemorrhage.
CASE: A primigravida presented with infected retained products of conception. Excessive hemorrhage of unclear etiology occurred at dilation and curettage. After a second episode of bleeding, the patient received a diagnosis of uterine arteriovenous fistula.
CONCLUSION: Uterine arteriovenous communications should be included in the differential diagnosis in patients with excessive postpartum or postinstrumentation bleeding. Color and…

Arteriovenous fistulae originating from the vertebral artery are rare. We report a patient in whom a vertebral artery-jugular venous fistula developed following insertion of a central venous catheter via the internal jugular vein. The fistula was successfully occluded surgically.

BACKGROUND: Two children with congenital hepatoportal arteriovenous fistulas have been investigated and treated surgically. These cases have been reviewed with five cases previously reported.
METHODS: Two children, 5 months and 14 months of age, presenting with failure to thrive, hepatosplenomegaly, ascites, and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding with evidence of portal hypertension, were found to have congenital hepatoportal arteriovenous fistulas.
RESULTS: Doppler ultrasonographic examination was important in identifying abnormal portal venous flow. Angiogram identified the fistulas, conf…

This paper gives a brief description of the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of traumatic arteriovenous communications. Traumatic arteriovenous communications of the face and scalp are rare lesions characterized by multiple endothelial-lined channels between the arterial and venous system. A swelling of the face with pulsatile tinnitus comprise the main presenting symptoms. Lesions should be delimited by arteriography unless small and localized. They are managed by complete excision and ligation of arterial feeding vessels. One case of traumatic arteriovenous communication o

The vertebral artetio-venous fistulas are seldom reported as a complication of the carotid angiography. As emphasized in this case report it's difficult to identify the place of the communication between the vein and the artery. It explains that two operations were necessary before the total exclusion of the fistula. The study of the literature recalls the main clinical features in that sort of fistula, constituted by the subjective and objective perception of a hum. The more often related complications consist in vertebro-basilar insufficiency, symptoms of root or spinal-cord squeezing, ische

On the occasion of a recent observation in our Centre of a case of congenital renal arteriovenous fistula, we make a review of the literature and give a detailed description of the clinical case presented. We stress the difficulty in differentiating between congenital and acquired fistulae and explain the course of therapy currently used.

A case of post-traumatic arteriovenous fistula involving the superficial temporal artery is reported. The traumatic episode antedated the clinical manifestation and diagnosis by 28 months. The salient feature of the physical examination was the presence of a pulsatile mass with detectable bruit. This lesion, which was confirmed by angiography and computerized tomography, was treated by direct excision.

A 72-year-old woman was referred for noticing a nodule on the arteriovenous fistula spontaneous obstruction. Physical examination revealed a dark reddish, non-pulsatile nodule in the right forearm that measured 21 × 13 mm, bled easily, and was partially crusted. During the course of examinations, the patient developed trauma-induced excessive bleeding from the lesion. At the initial examination, based on the clinical findings, we considered the possibility of cutaneous neoplasm. Eventually, we made the diagnosis of an organized hematoma and an arteriovenous fistula pseudoaneurysm. No previous …

Primary arteriovenous fistulae remain the gold standard for hemodialysis access. The radiocephalic or Brescia-Cimino fistula is the autologous fistula of choice, with a primary success rate of nearly 93% and a 1-year patency rate of up to 82%. Alternative arteriovenous fistulae include the snuff box fistula and a brachiobasilic fistula with a 1-year patency rate of up to 90%. Complications include thrombosis, infection, arterial steal syndrome, venous hypertension, aneurysms, and congestive heart failure. Despite these complications, arteriovenous fistulae provide good long-term hemodialysis a…

Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas are rare congenital malformations associated in 40% of cases with Osler-Weber-Rendu disease. PAF acquired in connection with the chest trauma, surgery and some inflammatory or neoplastic lung diseases were also described. In the Institute of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases we have observed 11 cases of congenital PAF in 4000 resected lungs during the last years. In this report we described one more case with PAF. A 40 years old man was admitted to the Institute of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases with hemoptysis. History and physical examination was unremarkable.…

Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) involving the kidney are rare. They are generally classified as congenital, idiopathic or acquired. The authors present 5 cases of renal arterio-venous communications observed in recent years. These cases don't include the congenital type and represent the forms of AVFs that are more frequently observed (1 idiopathic, 3 iatrogenic, 1 associated with malignancy). This study is aimed at examining the clinical picture and the procedures of detection and monitoring of renal AVFs. The various adopted therapeutic procedures (nephrectomy, surgical ablation, radiological …

During the 20-year-period 1959-78, 7 patients with pulmonary arteriovenous fistula were treated at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. There were 5 men and 2 women, with a mean age of 26 (14-47) years. Cyanosis with elevated haematocrit was present in 4, dyspnoea in 4, neurological signs in 3 (including one brain abscess and one hemiplegia). Systolic hum was audible in 3 cases. Three patients had the hereditary type of the disease (Rendu-Osler-Weber) with telangiectasiae also elsewhere in the body. The calculated right-to-left shunt varied from 14 to 56 per cent of the cardi…
