Ecology and evolution of chlamydial symbionts of arthropods.

The phylum Chlamydiae consists of obligate intracellular bacteria including major human pathogens and diverse environmental representatives. Here we investigated the Rhabdochlamydiaceae, which is predicted to be the largest and most diverse chlamydial family, with the few described members known to infect arthropod hosts. Using published 16 S rRNA gene sequence data we identified at least 388 genus-level lineages containing about 14 051 putative species within this family. We show that rhabdochlamydiae are mainly found in freshwater and soil environments, suggesting the existence of diverse, y

[Arthropods as a cause of leisure sickness: ectoparasites].

Ectoparasites are a type of arthropod parasites that live on the body surface of their host. Many ectoparasitic infestations are associated with travel and leisure. Recognition of the specific symptoms of ectoparasitic infestations is important because of the hygienic and therapeutic consequences.

Phenoptosis in arthropods and immortality of social insects.

In general, there are no drastic differences in phenoptosis patterns in plant and animal organisms. However, there are some specific features characteristic for insects and other arthropods: 1) their development includes metamorphosis with different biochemical laws at consecutive developmental stages; 2) arthropods can reduce or stop development and aging when in a state of diapause or temporal cold immobility; 3) their life cycle often correlates with seasonal changes of surroundings; 4) polymorphism is widespread - conspecifics differ by their lifespans and phenoptosis features; 5) lifespan

Nuisance arthropods, nonhost odors, and vertebrate chemical aposematism.

Mosquitoes, ticks, and other ectoparasitic arthropods use chemoreception to avoid vertebrates that are known or presumed to be dangerous or otherwise unprofitable hosts. Nonhosts may belong to a species that is regularly unaccepted or one that includes both accepted and unaccepted individuals. A diverse array of qualities including immunocompetence, vigilant grooming behavior, mechanical inaccessibility, and toxicity have been proposed as the features that render vertebrate chemical emitters unsuitable as hosts for arthropods. In addition to advantages accrued by ectoparasitic arthropods that

Spiroplasmas: infectious agents of plants, arthropods and vertebrates.

The spiroplasmas are mollicutes characterized by motility and helical morphology. They were discovered through studies on corn stunt and citrus stubborn diseases. The stubborn agent was the first mollicute of plant origin to be obtained in culture and the first cultured mollicute to possess a helical morphology. The citrus pathogen has been known as Spiroplasma citri since 1973. The corn stunt agent was cultured in 1975 and fully characterized as Spiroplasma kunkelii by 1986. The third and only other phytopathogenic spiroplasma is Spiroplasma phoeniceum, cultured from naturally infected periwi

[Spiroplasmas and hematophagous arthropods; prospects in tropical pathology].

Spiroplasmas are original wall-free prokaryotes which exhibit motility and a helical shape although lacking any cell wall or motile apparatus. They are known by phytopathologists because some of them are responsible for severe arthropod-borne plant diseases, such as Spiroplasma citri, the etiologic agent of "citrus stubborn disease". Other spiroplasmas are pathogenic for a number of insects: drosophila, bees and beetles. More recently spiroplasmas were also isolated from ticks, mosquitoes, horse-flies and deer-flies opening a new chapter in medical pathology. These agents are of possible great

Identification of blood meals of blood-sucking arthropods.

The identification of blood meals of blood-sucking arthropods requires a test which is sensitive enough to detect even partially digested blood and specific enough to identify the various hosts. The technique of preference is the precipitin test which makes use of the specific combination of the serum proteins of the blood. The preparation of the blood meal extract and the procedure for the absorption of the antisera is described and various methods of performing the precipitin test are mentioned. When the hosts involved are closely related to each other it is necessary to use the inhibition t

Arthropod Envenomation in North America.

Arthropods (phylum Arthopoda) account for a higher percentage of morbidity and mortality to humans than do mammalian bites, snake bites, or marine envenomation. They are ubiquitous in domestic dwellings, caves, and campsites and in wilderness settings such as deserts, forests, and lakes. Although arthropods are most intrusive during warmer months, many are active throughout the winter, particularly indoors. Arthropods are also nocturnal and often bite unsuspecting victims while they are sleeping. Encounters with humans are generally defensive, accidental, or reactive. An individual stung by an

Arthropod-borne diseases in homeless.

Homeless people are particularly exposed to ectoparasite. The living conditions and the crowded shelters provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, and mites. Body lice have long been recognized as human parasites and although typically prevalent in rural communities in upland areas of countries close to the equator, it is now increasingly encountered in developed countries especially in homeless people or inner city economically deprived population. Fleas are widespread but are not adapted to a specific host and may occasionally bite humans. Most common fleas that parasite

Arthropod poisons and the cardiovascular system.

Animal poisons induce myocardial damage after envenomation. The cardiac manifestations after black widow spider bite are rarely observed and their prognostic significance are not known. Hymenoptera induce anaphylactic manifestations commonly observed in adults with previous coronary artery disease although myocardial involvement is observed in a few without previous heart disease. The mechanism of cardiac involvement after scorpion envenomation has been elucidated, however after widow spider bite or hymenoptera stings the mechanism of myocardial damage of those without previous heart disease i

Arthropod-induced stress in livestock.

Traditionally, arthropod-induced stress in livestock has been correlated with animal performance. Many of the early research trials were superimposed over animal science trials, which dictated the parameters of the research. This article discusses the multidiscipline approach that is needed to ensure recognition of factors other than insects that could enhance or decrease the apparent impact livestock insects might have on animal performance.

Arthropod-borne encephalitides in the Americas.

The arthropod-borne encephalitides are an important cause of equine and human morbidity in the Americas. Between 1975 and 1978, 6970 human cases of arboviral encephalitis were reported in the United States of America; however, this represents only a fraction of the true incidence. St Louis encephalitis (4824 cases), California encephalitis (1035 cases), and western equine encephalitis (WEE, 947 cases) accounted for 98.5% of all reported infections. Approximately 1000-4000 cases of equine encephalitis occur annually in the United States, the majority due to WEE. In tropical America, important o

The development and evolution of arthropod tagmata.

The segmented body is a hallmark of the arthropod body plan. Morphological segments are formed during embryogenesis, through a complex procedure involving the activation of a series of gene regulatory networks. The segments of the arthropod body are organized into functional units known as tagmata, and these tagmata are different among the arthropod classes (e.g. head, thorax and abdomen in insects). Based on embryological work on segment generation in a number of arthropod species, coupled with a survey of classical descriptions of arthropod development, I suggest a new framework for the evol
