The management of hip injuries in the athlete has evolved significantly in the past few years with the advancement of arthroscopic techniques. The application of minimally invasive surgical techniques has facilitated relatively rapid returns to sporting activity in recreational and elite athletes alike. Recent advancements in both hip arthroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging have elucidated several sources of intraarticular pathology that result in chronic and disabling hip symptoms. Many of these conditions were previously unrecognized and thus, left untreated. Current indications for hip a

PURPOSE: Arthroscopic surgery has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with temporomandibular disorders, relieving patients' symptoms and restoring adequate mandibular function. For those patients with poor arthroscopic outcomes, various treatment modalities are possible, such as nonsurgical therapy, open surgery, or repeat arthroscopic surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our results with rearthroscopy in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical data and operative reports for 50 patients who underwent a second arthros

Twenty patients underwent operative arthroscopic procedures of the hip joint. All procedures were performed with the patient in the supine position on a standard fracture table using fluoroscopy through three arthroscopic portals (anterolateral, anterior paratrochanteric, and posterior paratrochanteric). The initial indications were therapeutic in 16 patients: loose bodies in four, synovial chondromatosis in three, rheumatoid arthritis in five, ankylosing spondylitis in one, septic arthritis in one, avascular necrosis of femoral head in one, and primary osteoarthritis in one. In four patients

The only way to show the healing potential in hyaline cartilage after the treatment of tibial plateau fractures in humans is the second-look arthroscopy. Our aim is to examine the healing potential of the hyaline cartilage in tibial plateau fractures treated with arthroscopy-assisted surgery. We applied second-look arthroscopy to the 12 patients out of 52 who had tibial plateau fractures treated by arthroscopy-assisted surgery. The mean age was 41. The tibial plateau fractures were classified according to Schatzker classification. The period between the primary surgical treatment and second-lo

BACKGROUND: The NanoScope, given its smaller size, may be further from critical structures when establishing volar wrist arthroscopy portals compared to the traditional 2.7-mm arthroscope.
METHODS: Ten fresh-frozen latex-injected cadaver specimens were utilized. The volar radial (VR) and volar ulnar (VU) portals were created using an inside-out approach. The volar radial midcarpal (VR-MC) and volar ulnar midcarpal (VU-MC) portals were created using an inside-out approach. The arm was then dissected under 3.5-mm loupe magnification. Digital calipers were used to measure the distance between th

Capsulotomy in hip arthroscopy is essential for optimal visualization and instrument maneuverability. Commonly used capsulotomy techniques, such as interportal and T-type capsulotomy, result in damage to the iliofemoral ligament, a major stabilizer of the hip joint. The periportal technique, a relatively novel capsulotomy technique, involves the creation of 2 to 3 relatively small portals, thereby preserving the capsuloligamentous complex while allowing for the passage of an arthroscope and instruments into the joint space. Emerging evidence suggests that the periportal approach leads to impro

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction associates pain, limited mouth opening and joint noise. Failures of conservative treatments may lead to arthroscopy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the current interest of arthroscopy in the treatment of TMJ dysfunction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the keywords "TMJ" and "Arthroscopy", 1668 articles were found in the Sciencedirect database. We selected 17 papers published between September 2012 and May 2016. Six questions were asked: (1) what treatment should be given to patients suffering from TMJ dysfunction? (2) What treatment s

We report the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with left hip pain and was diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement. She underwent hip arthroscopy to repair a degenerative labral tear, as well as radiofrequency debridement and microfracture of the exposed chondral defect, and femoral osteoplasty. Two months after hip arthroscopy, hip pain and limping began. Hip radiography showed a concentric decrease of joint space and no signs of joint incongruity or osteophytosis. Revision surgery 4 months after hip arthroscopy showed that the cartilage of the femoral head was soft and separated

The acceptance and rates of hip arthroscopy are increasing in the United States and abroad and the literature describing it is expanding. Indications for hip arthroscopy include labral tears, loose bodies, femoroacetabular impingement, ruptured ligamentum teres, chondral injuries, adhesive capsulitis, instability, synovial disease, disorders of the iliopsoas tendon, external coxa saltans, tears of the hip abductors, and diagnosis of unresolved intra-articular hip pain. Current techniques in the central and peripheral compartments include, but are not limited to, labral debridement, labral repa

Important progress has been made during the past 30 years in arthroscopic ankle surgery. Ankle arthroscopy has gradually changed from a diagnostic to a therapeutic tool. Most arthroscopic procedures can be performed by using the anterior working area with the ankle in dorsiflexion or plantar flexion; there is no need for routine ankle distraction. Anterior ankle problems, such as anterior impingement syndrome, are approached by anteromedial and anterolateral portals and, if necessary, an accessory portal. Most osteochondral defects can be reached from anterior with the ankle in plantar flexion

BACKGROUND: Although the potential complications of elbow arthroscopy, including nerve injuries, have been described, the prevalence of their occurrence has not been well defined. The purpose of this paper is to describe the serious and minor complications in a large series of patients treated with elbow arthroscopy.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 473 consecutive elbow arthroscopies performed in 449 patients over an eighteen-year period was conducted. Of the 473 cases, 414 were followed for more than six weeks. The most common final diagnoses were osteoarthritis (150 cases), loose bodies

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Between 1990 and 1998, 110 knee arthroscopies were performed in children. We analyzed the epidemiology and diagnostic data and studied the correlation between clinical and radiographic findings and the final diagnosis after arthroscopy in order to establish a consensus on use of knee arthroscopy in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We made a retrospective analysis of 110 knee arthroscopies performed in children, classing the patients in three age groups: 0-5 years, 5-10 years, 10-17 years. Clinical and radiological findings were compared with the arthroscopy findings.

The limited data (n = 42) and diverse pathology within this study make statistical analysis difficult, although the observations are still meaningful. Diagnostic arthroscopy has defined elusive causes of disabling hip pain in an athletic population including occult labral and chondral damage and rupture of the ligamentum teres. Operative arthroscopy has been effective in reducing the symptoms associated with many of these forms of pathology. For more evident causes of hip pain, such as loose bodies or impinging osteophytes, arthroscopy offers an excellent alternative to traditional open techni

The use of arthroscopy to treat wrist arthritis is a relatively new approach to a common problem. Recent advances in arthroscopic surgery techniques and instrumentation have enabled the surgeon to improve the treatment of wrist pathology. Patients undergoing arthroscopic procedures potentially have better motion postoperatively because the dorsal carpal ligaments are preserved. This article reviews the techniques of arthroscopic proximal row carpectomy, radial styloidectomy, and wrist joint synovectomy.
