Further report on Cryptosporidium in Barcelona zoo mammals.

The prevalence of fecal shedding of Cryptosporidium in 36 primates (21 species and subspecies) and 62 herbivores (36 species and subspecies) housed at the Barcelona zoo was studied. Cryptosporidial oocysts were found in stool samples of 14 Primate, 18 Artiodactyla, 2 Perissodactyla, and 1 Proboscidea species. None of them showed symptoms related to the parasite. Neither the sex nor the group condition (alone or in a group) of the animals studied appeared to be correlated with parasitic prevalence. The results extend the host species range of the protozoan to 18 new animals (6 Primate, 10 Artio

Why ruminating ungulates chew sloppily: Biomechanics discern a phylogenetic pattern.

There is considerable debate regarding whether mandibular morphology in ungulates primarily reflects phylogenetic affinities or adaptation to specific diet. In an effort to help resolve this debate, we use three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) to assess the biomechanical performance of mandibles in eleven ungulate taxa with well-established but distinct dietary preferences. We found notable differences in the magnitude and the distribution of von Mises stress between Artiodactyla and Perissodactyla, with the latter displaying lower overall stress values. Additionally, within the orde

Copromicroscopic study of gastrointestinal parasites in captive mammals at Central Zoo, Lalitpur, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Zoological gardens (Zoo) provide abode to various threatened animals or trafficked animals seized by the authorities, and injured and orphaned animals. Captive animals are more susceptible to infection as they are under significant stress due to diet and space which further dwindle their resistance to parasitic infections. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and burden of gastrointestinal parasites in captive mammals housed at Central Zoo. METHODS: Fresh faecal samples from three orders of mammals including carnivora (n = 24), rodentia (n = 28) and ar

Reinstatement of Dermacentor tricuspis (Schulze, 1933) n. comb., n. stat. (Acari: Ixodidae) as a valid species, synonymization of D. atrosignatus Neumann, 1906 and description of a new species from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Re-examination of the holotype of Dermacentor atrosignatus Neumann, 1906 (Acari: Ixodidae) stored in the Natural History Museum (London, UK) revealed that this taxon is identical with D. auratus Supino, 1897 and should be treated as a junior synonym of the latter species. A correct name for the distinct species previously identified as D. atrosignatus Neumann, 1906 sensu Wassef & Hoogstraal, 1984 should be D. tricuspis (Schulze, 1933) n. comb., n. stat. Adults of D. tricuspis are redescribed here. Re-examination of extensive holdings of Oriental Dermacentor Koch, 1844 ticks stored in the Unite

Cattle breed-variation in infestation by the horn fly Haematobia irritans.

A study was carried out to assess the resistance of pure and cross-bred groups of cattle to the horn fly Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) in northern Argentina. Pure-bred cattle were Criolla, Iberian Bos taurus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) and Nellore, Bos indicus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae). Cross-bred cattle were Hereford, British B. taurus (34%) X Nellore (66%) and Hereford (66%) X Nellore (34%). All were heifers and animals were maintained in two groups, each containing a mixture of pure and cross-breeds. The lowest fly numbers were found on Criolla heifers and t

Wound myiasis in a wild boar by Lucilia caesar (Diptera: Calliphoridae): First case and current status of animal myiasis by this species.

The first case of myiasis caused by Lucilia caesar (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a wild boar, Sus scrofa L. (Artiodactyla: Suidae) is described. The myiasis occurred in October 2019 in Southern Italy and the identification of the agent was based on adult male morphology. The wild boar had a wound on its right side, near the neck, which was largely infested by larvae. The ecology, distribution and current literature status about cases of animal myiasis by this species is also included.

[Clinicomorphological observation of bronchioloalveolar carcinoma of the lung].

The authors analyze rare lung diseases and describe a clinicomorphological case of bronioloalveolar carcinoma of the lung as one of rare bronchopulmonary diseases. According to the WHO histological classification (1999), the tumor is adenocarcinoma that is represented solely by bronchioloalveolar vegetations as a monolayer of the cells lining the walls of pre-existing alveoles without invasion of the stroma, vessels, and pleura. In 1876 Mallaser first described this rare disease in cloven-hoofed animals (Artiodactyla) in Scandinavian countries. Subsequently cases of this disease were also desc

The First Description of Setaria Tundra (Issaitshikoff & Rajewskaya, 1928) in Roe Deer from Croatia.

Genus Setaria, Viborg 1795, comprises 46 species that parasitize in the peritoneal cavity of Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla and Hyracoidea. The majority of these infections pass unnoticed, but occasionally they can induce severe peritonitis or neurological signs in aberrant hosts and, rarely, even in humans. In this paper we describe for the first time the finding of Setaria tundra in roe deer in Croatia. We examined 45 roe deer and determined the presence of Setaria nematodes in 24.4% of samples, which were subsequently diagnosed as Setaria tundra using molecular methods.

Role of small mammals in the persistence of Louping-ill virus: field survey and tick co-feeding studies.

Louping-ill (LI) is a tick-borne viral disease of red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus Lath. (Tetraonidae: Galliformes), and sheep, Ovis aries L. (Bovidae: Artiodactyla), that causes economic loss to upland farms and sporting estates. Unvaccinated sheep, grouse and mountain hares, Lepus timidus L. (Leporidae: Lagomorpha), are known to transmit LI virus, whereas red deer, Cenrus elaphus L. (Cervidae: Artiodactyla), and rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus L. (Leporidae: Lagomorpha), do not. However, the role of small mammals is unknown. Here, we determine the role of small mammals, in particular fiel

A new filarial nematode (Onchocercidae) from warthogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) of the Kruger National Park.

Fifty-five warthogs [Phacochoerus aethiopicus (Suidae: Artiodactyla)] from the Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa, were examined for parasites. Adult filarial nematodes were found in lymphatic vessels adjacent to peripheral and visceral lymph nodes, and microfilariae were found in lymph nodes and circulating blood. Both the adult parasite and the microfilaria are described. Specific identification is pending confirmation and recovery of intact adult specimens and microfilariae identical to those described herein.

A disease resembling paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.). An aetiological and patho-anatomical study.

A disease in wild living roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) caused by acid-fast bacteria is described. The morphological and cultural properties of these bacteria agree closely with corresponding properties of Mycobact. johnei. Enlarged lymph nodes, especially mesenteric lymph nodes with greyish-yellow necroses, were the most prominent macroscopic lesions. No intestinal lesions were present. The histopathological picture of the lymph nodes resembled mostly lesions which can occur in paratuberculous sheep and goats. The epithelioid cells contained masses of acid-fast bacteria. Such rods were als

The genomic structure of Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals gives clues to evolutionary history within the genus.

The genomic structure and the restriction maps were studied in 24 Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals. From SpeI restriction profiles, the strains could be ascribed to three clonal groups, each corresponding to a specific host. Cross contamination between exclusively terrestrial and exclusively marine hosts is unlikely suggesting the divergence of the different species of the genus Brucella which may have taken place 60 million years ago, concomitant with the radiation of their mammalian hosts (Artiodactyla) from other mammalian orders.

A survey for Cryptosporidium spp. in mammals at the Barcelona Zoo.

Mammals housed at the Barcelona Zoo belonging to the orders Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla and Proboscidea were examined for Cryptosporidium infections. A total of 183 fecal samples from 17 carnivores and 34 herbivores revealed patent infections in only 6 herbivore species (5 artiodactyls of the families Bovidae and Giraffidae and 1 perissodactyl of the family Rhinocerotidae); all carnivores were negative. Intensity of infection was found to be generally low. Connochaetes taurinus taurinus, Gazella dorcas neglecta, Kobus ellipsiprymmus and Giraffa camelopardalis constitute new host sp

'Synaptic' bodies in the pineal glands of the cow, sheep and pig.

The present results show that 'synaptic' bodies (SB) are a heterogeneous group of organelles in the pineal glands of Artiodactyla. Basically, rod-like (ribbons) and sphere-like (spherules) SB can be distinguished. In the pig small numbers of both 'synaptic' ribbons (SR) and 'synaptic' spherules (SS) are found. In bovine and ovine pineal glands few SS but no SR were seen. The same results were obtained from animals of the same species but from different continents. This suggests that the numbers of SB are species specific rather than influenced by the different lighting conditions in Europe and

Predicting the mosquito species and vertebrate species involved in the theoretical transmission of Rift Valley fever virus in the United States.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne virus in the family Bunyaviridiae that has spread throughout continental Africa to Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. The establishment of RVFV in North America would have serious consequences for human and animal health in addition to a significant economic impact on the livestock industry. Published and unpublished data on RVFV vector competence, vertebrate host competence, and mosquito feeding patterns from the United States were combined to quantitatively implicate mosquito vectors and vertebrate hosts that may be important to RVFV tran

Pan-azole resistance in clinical Aspergillus fumigatus isolates carrying TR34/L98H from birds and mammals in Belgium.

Aspergillosis causes significant health risks to both birds and mammals. The outcome of these infections is often poor due to delayed diagnosis and treatment failure. We investigated 152 cases of aspergillosis from birds and mammals in Belgium. Most samples originated from the taxonomic orders Artiodactyla (40.1 %) and Columbiformes (19.7 %). Five isolates (3.3 %) showed phenotypical resistance against at least one medical azole. Three of these isolates were pan-azole resistant bearing the TR34/L98H mutation. The predominance of this resistance mutation supports an environmental route for expo

Molecular characterization and genetic diversity of Blastocystis sp. in animals from four zoos in China.

AIMS: Blastocystis sp. is a widespread unicellular protozoan that is a gastrointestinal eukaryotic parasite of humans and animals. At present, Blastocystis sp. is subdivided into 42 subtypes (STs), and the different STs suggest different host specificities. The study aimed to investigate in detail the host range and genetic diversity of Blastocystis sp., given the limited studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 863 stools were taken from 135 animal species. Among these, 135 (15.64 %) were positive for Blastocystis sp., with 42.25 % (30/71), 5.04 % (6/119), 27.63 % (42/152), 2.56 % (1/39), 16
