Idiopathic mucosal lesions of the arytenoid cartilages of 21 Thoroughbred yearlings: 1997-2001.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Mucosal ulcers and, occasionally, small granulomas on the axial surface of one or both arytenoid cartilages have been found in TB yearlings presented for post sale endoscopic examination. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence, endoscopic characteristics and outcome of a group of Thoroughbred yearlings affected with mucosal ulcers and granulomas of the arytenoid cartilage. HYPOTHESIS: The incidence of mucosal ulceration of the arytenoid cartilages of yearling Thoroughbreds is relatively high compared to other upper airway abnormalities; and that the majority of

Histological findings in arytenoid cartilages after long-lasting recurrent nerve paralysis.

The histological findings in 15 excised arytenoid cartilages are reported. In all the cases there was a long-term recurrent nerve paralysis without additional inflammatory disease. In one of the cases there was fibrous ankylosis of the crico-arytenoid joint. This is the first report made on the histological findings in the arytenoid cartilage in cases of paralysis. It is confirmed that there are differences in joint pathology between cases of immobility due to inflammatory conditions and those due to pure noninflammatory recurrent paralysis. The fixation caused by arthritis of the joint has a

[Sexual dimorphism of morphometric parameters of arytenoid cartilages as a criterion for establishing human sex].

The objective of the study is to determine sexual dimorphism of morphometric features of adult arytenoid cartilages (AC) as applied to forensic medical examination of personality identification. The SC of 254 males and 106 females who died of mechanical strangulation asphyxia between the ages of 19 and 91 years were studied using the set of 14 parameters. All the parameters have a normal distribution according to Pearson's χ2 test. Their means were significantly higher in men than in women. Sex differences in the coefficients of variation of the parameters are insignificant. All AC parameters

[Intubation trauma of the larynx--a literature review with special reference to arytenoid cartilage dislocation].

Trauma to the cricoarytenoid joint represents a rare but serious complication of endotracheal intubation. Subluxation and luxation of the arytenoid cartilage may occur during difficult but also following uncomplicated intubation. Forces on the arytenoid cartilage exerted by the laryngoscope blade or by the distal part of the endotracheal tube may cause anterior and inferior displacement of the arytenoid cartilage. Due to the conventional intubation technique the left arytenoid cartilage is affected most frequently. Posterolateral subluxation is attributed to the pressure exerted on the posteri

Arytenoid cartilage dislocation from external blunt laryngeal trauma: evaluation and therapy without laryngeal electromyography.

BACKGROUND: Intubation trauma is the most common cause of arytenoid dislocation. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnosis and treatment of arytenoid cartilage dislocation from external blunt laryngeal trauma in the absence of laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) and to explore the role of early attempted closed reduction in arytenoids cartilage reposition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This 15-year retrospective study recruited 12 patients with suspected arytenoid dislocation from external blunt laryngeal trauma, who were evaluated through 7 approaches: detailed personal history, voice han

Incidental Diagnosis of Pediatric Arytenoid Cartilage Dislocation During Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study: A Case Report.

Arytenoid cartilage dislocation is one of the most common mechanical causes of vocal fold immobility. The most common etiologies are intubation and external trauma, but its incidence is lower than 0.1%. Its symptoms include dysphonia, vocal fatigue, loss of vocal control, breathiness, odynophagia, dysphagia, dyspnea, and cough. Although there are some reports of arytenoid cartilage dislocation in adults, there are only few reports on its occurrence in children. It is particularly difficult to detect the symptoms of arytenoid cartilage dislocation in uncooperative pediatric patients with brain

Arytenoid cartilage movements are hypokinetic in Parkinson's disease: A quantitative dynamic computerised tomographic study.

BACKGROUND: Voice change is one of the earliest features of Parkinson's disease. However, quantitative studies of vocal fold dynamics which are needed to provide insight into disease biology, aid diagnosis, or track progression, are few. METHODS: We therefore quantified arytenoid cartilage movements and glottic area during repeated phonation in 15 patients with Parkinson's disease (symptom duration < 6 years) and 19 controls, with 320-slice computerised tomography (CT). We related these measures to perceptual voice evaluations and spirometry. We hypothesised that Parkinson's disease patients

Attempts to restore abduction of the paralyzed equine arytenoid cartilage. I. Nerve-muscle pedicle transplants.

The purpose of this project was to adapt a surgical technique from humans and dogs to horses in which a portion of an accessory muscle of respiration and its nerve supply is transplanted to a denervated dorsal cricoarytenoid muscle. Anatomical dissections in seven horses revealed two possible donor nerve-pedicle grafts: the omohyoid and the sternothyrohyoid, both innervated by a branch of the first and second cervical nerves. Histochemical evaluations in two ponies of the dorsal cricoarytenoid, omohyoid and sternothyrohyoid muscles revealed similar proportions of fiber types 1 and 2 in all thr

Attempts to restore abduction of the paralyzed equine arytenoid cartilage. II. Nerve implantation (pilot study).

The purpose of this project was to attempt restoration of abduction of a recently experimentally denervated left dorsal cricoarytenoid muscle by implanting a transected nerve-end into the paralyzed muscle. In six ponies the cut end of the second cervical nerve was implanted into a slit made in the left dorsal cricoarytenoid muscle. The nerve end was secured in place with one 5-0 polypropylene suture connecting the epineurium to the epimysium. The left recurrent laryngeal nerve was transected during this procedure. All six ponies showed signs of complete left laryngeal hemiplegia immediately af

Complete Bilateral Ossification of the Arytenoid Cartilages With Minimal Involvement of the Laryngeal Skeleton: A Unique Anatomical Variation.

The arytenoid cartilages are distinguished by their mobility and unique mixed composition of hyaline and elastic cartilage. Though laryngeal cartilage ossification is not rare, and its pattern is well-studied, sole complete and bilateral arytenoid cartilage ossification is an aberration. An 84-year-old woman, with no history of voice or breathing issues, was brought to the emergency department for a head-and-neck trauma following a fall. CT scans revealed a subdural hematoma and, incidentally, a bilateral ossification of the arytenoid cartilages, sparing the vocal processes but involving compl

A Case of Anterior Arytenoid Cartilage Dislocation During Nasal Tracheal Intubation Using an Indirect Video Laryngoscope.

Arytenoid cartilage dislocation can occur as a complication of tracheal intubation and laryngeal trauma, but its occurrence with indirect video laryngoscopy has not been reported. This paper reports anterior arytenoid dislocation occurring after nasotracheal intubation performed under indirect laryngoscopy using a video laryngoscope (McGRATH MAC; Medtronic). The dislocation is presumed to have resulted from the laryngoscope blade being initially inserted too deeply and applying pressure to the posterior aspect of the left cricoarytenoid joint. This patient's anterior arytenoid dislocation was

Posterior Arytenoid Cartilage Dislocation Despite Optimal Intubation During Prolonged Steep Trendelenburg Robotic Prostatectomy: A Potential Biomechanical Contributor.

Background: Arytenoid cartilage dislocation (ACD) is a rare but clinically significant complication of endotracheal intubation that may be misdiagnosed as transient vocal cord paralysis. The potential role of prolonged surgical positioning in ACD remains underrecognized. Methods: A 63-year-old male developed left posterior ACD following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) performed in a steep Trendelenburg position for 3.5 h. Intubation was successfully achieved on the first attempt using a video laryngoscope with full glottic visualization and no apparent airway trauma. Postoperativel
