Pulmonary mucormycosis is a rare and aggressive invasive fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals, such as those with diabetes mellitus or those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. This case describes a severe instance of pulmonary mucormycosis resulting in progressive tracheal wall destruction in a young, previously healthy male. A 20-year-old male with a denied history of diabetes mellitus was admitted to a local hospital with abdominal pain for 9 days and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). During his stay at the local hospit

Prevalence of internal parasites was determined by fecal examination for eggs and oocysts in Thoroughbred foals in central Kentucky in 2003. Fecal samples were examined from 733 foals on 14 farms. This included 70 trips to the farms and a total of 2,346 fecal samplings. Monthly collection of fecal samples was begun for four farms in February, six in March, three in April, and one farm in May. Termination of the study for all farms was the end of July. A criterion was that the foals be at least 10 days old for initial samplings. If available, the same foals were sampled each time, in addition t

In order to assess the parasitological status in imported pheasants, 51 birds (Phasianus colchicus) coming from Poland and Rumania and used in Italy in repopulation interventions for hunting purposes were examined. From each animal the trachea, oesophagus, crop and intestine were collected and examined for the presence of nematodes. The examination of the oesophagi and crops of 5 birds revealed the presence of parasites pertaining to the family Capillariidae: Eucoleus contortus was found in all of the 5 animals, E. annulatus was present along with the previous parasite in one animal coming fro

Baylisascaris procyonis, or raccoon roundworm, is an intestinal nematode parasite of raccoons (Procyon lotor) that is important to public and wildlife health. Historically, the parasite was uncommon in the southeastern US; however, the range of B. procyonis has expanded to include Florida, US. From 2010 to 2016, we opportunistically sampled 1,030 raccoons statewide. The overall prevalence was 3.7% (95% confidence interval=2.5-4.8%) of sampled individuals, and infection intensity ranged from 1 to 48 (mean±standard deviation 9.9±4.0). We found raccoon roundworm in 9/56 (16%) counties sampled, an

Ophidascaris wangi sp. n. collected from the king rat snake Elaphe carinata (Günther) (Serpentes: Colubridae) in China is described using both light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species differs from its congeners in the presence of narrow lateral alae originating a short distance posterior to the base of the ventrolateral lips, its relatively long oesophagus (3.57-4.54 mm long, representing 6.6-7.6% of body length), its short spicules (1.89-2.14 mm long, representing 3.9-4.3% of body length), the number and arrangement of caudal papillae (49-57 pairs in total, arranged as follows:

Sixty specimens of Paralichthys isosceles captured in the southeastern Brazilian coast were investigated for helminths from October 2006 to March 2008. One thousand eight hundred and twenty larvae (third and fourth stages) of Hysterothylacium sp. were recovered from the abdominal cavity, free or inserted in the mesentery, intestine, stomach, stomach wall, liver, spleen, ovaries, and serosas of heart, kidneys, ovaries and abdominal musculature. Gross lesions appeared as nodules in the stomach mucosa and intestinal serosa. Histological examination of these nodules revealed sections of Hysterothy

The cause of the most significant helminth diseases in swine - Ascaris suum, can also causes infections in humans. The use of swine manure in agriculture renders the eggs of this ascaridida an accessible source of infection, thus posing a significant risk factor for human health. With the objective of proving the prevalence of infection with A. suum nematodes in the territory of Serbia, investigations were carried out in the period between 2007-2011 in the territories of five districts: North Bačka, South Banat, Braničevo, Zlatibor and Nišava. The investigations covered coprological examinatio

BACKGROUND: Nematodes of the Ascarididae, Ancylostomatidae and Onchocercidae families are parasites of human and veterinary importance causing infections with high prevalence worldwide. Molecular tools have significantly improved the diagnosis of these helminthiases, but the selection of genetic markers for PCR or metabarcoding purposes is often challenging because of the resolution these may show.
METHODS: Nuclear 18S rRNA, internal transcribed spacers 1 (ITS-1) and 2 (ITS-2), mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1) and mitochondrial rRNA genes 12S and 16S loci were studied for 30 spe

Due to the recent recovery of brown bear populations in Central Europe, information about their ascarid parasite, Baylisascaris transfuga is necessary as the parasite represents a part of natural ecological networks. B. transfuga can lead to larva migrans syndrome in accidental hosts, but its zoonotic potential has not been confirmed. The resent study compares development of larva migrans in infected mice inoculated with two infectious doses (ID 200 and ID 2000) of B. transfuga embryonated eggs, and the clinical manifestation to evaluate the pathogenicity of the larvae. Histopathology revealed

A flock of four backyard Japanese quail were submitted to the Pennsylvania State University Animal Diagnostic Laboratory for necropsy due to acute onset of lethargy and neurologic signs (i.e., torticollis) in July 2025. No gross lesions were appreciated, but severe, multifocal necrosis and lymphocytic perivascular cuffing with intralesional nematode larvae were found on histologic evaluation of cerebrum sections. Morphologic features, including paired lateral alae and excretory columns, suggested Baylisascaris spp. larvae. Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) brain scrolls were positive fo

The genus Contracaecum is an important group of anisakid nematodes containing species of veterinary, medical, and economic importance. However, current genetic sequences and the mitogenomic database for Contracaecum spp. are limited. In the present study, the nuclear 18S, 28S, and ITS regions and the mitochondrial cox1, cox2, and 12S data for C. ovale (Linstow 1907) were sequenced based on the newly collected specimens from Tachybaptus ruficollis (Podicipediformes: Podicipedidae) in China. These sequences exhibited 100% similarity in the 18S and 28S regions and 99.8% similarity in the ITS-1 re

During a parasitological survey of aquatic birds in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Buenos Aires province, Argentina), specimens of Contracaecum Raillet & Henry, 1912 sp. were found in the esophagus and stomach of the great egret Egretta alba (Gmelin, 1789) (Aves: Ardeidae). The nematodes were identified as Contracaecum multipapillatum (Drasche, 1882) on the basis of the following features: ratio of ventricular appendage length to esophagus length, ratio of intestinal caecum length to esophagus length, spicule lengths, number and arrangement of postcloacal papillae (3-4 pairs of adanal papillae,

The present study describes the synergistic effects of the cyclic depsipeptide BAY 44-4400 and piperazine in the treatment against the nematodes Trichinella spiralis, Heligmosomoides polygyrus, and Heterakis spumosa. The in vitro anthelmintic activity of a combination of the two compounds (1.7 motility units) against T. spiralis larvae was significantly higher than the sum of the individual drug effects (1.3 motility units). With regard to the rate of expulsion of H. polygyrus worms from the intestine of infected mice, an additive effect was observed; piperazine alone exerted an efficacy of 54

Lagochilascariosis is a rare and neglected zoonotic helminthiasis caused by Lagochilascaris spp., in which domestic and wild carnivores and humans act as definitive hosts. Among the six described species, Lagochilascaris minor is the only one known to infect humans. Clinically, the disease is characterized by nodular lesions, mainly in the cervical region, often associated with purulent exudate, and it occurs throughout the Neotropical region. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of lagochilascariosis in animals and humans and to report the first case of L. minor infection in a dome

The large intestine of a rat has been neglected almost completely as a site of Strongyloides sp. infection. We reported that adult Strongyloides ratti remained in the large intestine for more than 80 days, producing more number of infective larvae than small intestine adults, and therefore hypothesized that parasitism in this site could be a survival strategy. In wild rats, however, no study has focused on large intestine infections of Strongyloides. The present study revealed that 32.4% of 68 wild rats, Rattus norvegicus, had the infection of S. ratti in the large intestine, with an average o

Standardized flotation techniques were used to survey 56 grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) fecal samples for parasites. The samples were collected during the spring and autumn of 1995 and 1996 in the central Arctic of the Northwest Territories (Canada). Parasites of the genera Nematodirus, gastrointestinal coccidia, and an unidentified first stage protostrongylid larva are reported for the first time from grizzly bear feces in North America. Parasites of the genera Diphyllobothrium and Baylisascaris also were collected. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were significantly different between th
