The Role of the Caspian, Aral and Balkhash Lakes in the Spread and Preservation of Yersinia pestis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Based on phylogenetic analysis of whole-genome sequencing of Yersinia pestis 2.MED1 strains of the medieval biovar, combined with epizootic, epidemiological, and climatic data over a 100-year period, we have reconstructed the most probable directions of distribution of plague in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) in the 20th and 21st centuries. The data suggest the important role of three great lakes-the Caspian, Aral, and Balkhash-in the circulation and preservation of Y. pestis 2.MED1 in EECA. Three main directions of Y. pestis 2.MED1 expansion have been identified: Caspian (Caspian Sea

Regional Overview on Maternal and Child Nutrition and Examples of Nutrition Governance and Policy Responses: Europe, Central Asia and Eastern Mediterranean Regions.

The Eastern Mediterranean Regions and Europe and Central Asia Regions are facing an epidemiological and nutrition transition, especially among vulnerable groups including mothers, children and adolescents. This has led to a double burden of malnutrition (DBM). Poor infant and young child feeding (IYCF), poor dietary diversity, excessive consumption of energy dense unhealthy foods, a growing obesogenic environment for children, including aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods for children, and reduced physical activity are among the main causes. In addition, several countries in the region lac

Intercountry prevalences and practices of betel-quid use in south, southeast and eastern Asia regions and associated oral preneoplastic disorders: an international collaborative study by Asian betel-quid consortium of south and east Asia.

Health risks stemming from betel-quid (BQ) chewing are frequently overlooked by people. Updated epidemiological data on the increased BQ use among Asian populations using comparable data collection methods have not been widely available. To investigate the prevalence, patterns of practice and associated types of oral preneoplastic disorders, an intercountry Asian Betel-quid Consortium study (the ABC study) was conducted for Taiwan, Mainland China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal and Sri Lanka. A random sample of 8,922 subjects was recruited, and the data were analyzed using survey-data modules adju

Changes in national rates of psychiatric beds and incarceration in Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia from 1990-2019: A retrospective database analysis.

BACKGROUND: Numbers of psychiatric beds (general, forensic, and residential) and prison populations have been considered to be indicators of institutionalisation of people with mental illnesses. The present study aimed to assess changes of those indicators across Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CEECA) over the last three decades to capture how care has developed during that historical period. METHODS: We retrospectively obtained data on numbers of psychiatric beds and prison populations from 30 countries in CEECA between 1990 and 2019. We calculated the median of the percent changes

Prevalence of subclinical ketosis and production diseases in dairy cows in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Eastern Europe.

Subclinical ketosis (SCK) and periparturient diseases considerably account for economic and welfare losses in dairy cows. The majority of scientific reports investigating the prevalence of SCK and production diseases are based on empirical studies conducted in Western Europe and North America. The present study surveyed the prevalence of SCK and production-related clinical diseases in early lactating cows in various countries across the world other than those in North America and Western Europe. Twelve countries of South and Central America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico), Africa

The perfect storm: incarceration and the high-risk environment perpetuating transmission of HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Despite global reductions in HIV incidence and mortality, the 15 UNAIDS-designated countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) that gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 constitute the only region where both continue to rise. HIV transmission in EECA is fuelled primarily by injection of opioids, with harsh criminalisation of drug use that has resulted in extraordinarily high levels of incarceration. Consequently, people who inject drugs, including those with HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis, are concentrated within prisons. Evidence-based primary and secondary preve

Efficacy of Lacrimal Sac Massage in Management of Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction in Infants: An Observational Study of 853 Cases from a Single Institute of Eastern Asia.

PURPOSE: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is the most common cause of epiphora in infants. It usually resolves completely by the end of 1st year with conservative management in most cases. Many studies have confirmed high frequency (80%-90%) of spontaneous resolution of symptoms during the 1st year of life. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the lacrimal sac massage in the treatment of CNLDO. METHODS: The study was done in a tertiary care hospital in eastern Asia over 5 years. Each infant presenting with epiphora and diagnosed as CNLDO was treated with

Costs and impact on HIV transmission of a switch from a criminalisation to a public health approach to injecting drug use in eastern Europe and central Asia: a modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV incidence is increasing in eastern Europe and central Asia, primarily driven by injecting drug use. Coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and opioid agonist therapy are suboptimal, with many people who inject drugs (PWID) being incarcerated. We aimed to assess whether use of monies saved as a result of decriminalisation of drug use or possession to scale up ART and opioid agonist therapy could control HIV transmission among PWID in eastern Europe and central Asia. METHODS: A dynamic HIV transmission model among PWID incorporating incarceration, ART, and opioid agonist thera

Assessment of clinical efficacy and safety in a randomized double-blind study of etanercept and sulfasalazine in patients with ankylosing spondylitis from Eastern/Central Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Despite the demonstrated efficacy of etanercept for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), sulfasalazine is often prescribed, especially in countries with limited access to biologic agents. The objective of this subset analysis of the ASCEND trial was to compare the efficacy of etanercept and sulfasalazine in treating patients with AS from Asia, Eastern/Central Europe, and Latin America. A total of 287 patients, 190 receiving etanercept 50 mg once weekly and 97 receiving sulfasalazine 3 g daily, from eight countries were included in this subset analysis. Indigenous Plasmodium vivax upsurge in the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and South East Asia regions - beyond the constant culpability of climate change, COVID-19, and armed conflicts.

Controlling Plasmodium vivax presents greater challenges compared to Plasmodium falciparum. Here, we analyzed epidemiological data on indigenous P. vivax cases from the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific regions in recent years. Significant upsurges are observed in more than half of the countries within these regions. In Papua New Guinea and Yemen, the increase has been consistent since 2015, while others, including Indonesia and Pakistan, have experienced sharp rises between 2020 and 2023 (e.g., +100 % and +83.4 %). Notably, in countries like Thailand, initially target

The Challenges of Transition From Donor-Funded Programs: Results From a Theory-Driven Multi-Country Comparative Case Study of Programs in Eastern Europe and Central Asia Supported by the Global Fund.

INTRODUCTION: In the era of declining development assistance for health, transitioning externally funded programs to governments becomes a priority for donors. However, the process requires a careful approach not only to preserve the public health gains that have already been achieved but also to expand on them. In the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, countries are expected to graduate from support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in or before 2025. We aim to describe transition risks and identify possible means to address them. METHODS: Using a theory-based
