Electroconvulsive therapy in South Asia: Past, present, and future.

The practice of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) varies both between and within countries. We aimed to review historical and current trends in ECT practices, perceptions, and legislations in South Asia, a region with a high burden of mental illness and suicide. We searched MEDLINE (PubMed) and Google Scholar databases for relevant literature on ECT from each country. Additionally, a team of country-specific investigators performed supplemental searches and contacted key country contacts for relevant information. Relevant data were abstracted under the following headings: ECT practices, percepti

[Disseminated Penicillium marneffei infection suggesting visceral leishmaniasis in an HIV infected patient].

BACKGROUND: Penicilliosis is a fungal infection caused by Penicillium marneffei. In Southeast Asia, this infection is common in HIV-infected patients but few cases have been reported in Europe. CASE REPORT: The patient lived in southern France. He had HIV infection and was immunocompromised. The clinical signs suggested visceral leishmaniasis. Iterative travels to Southeast Asia were reported leading to the diagnosis of P. marneffei infection. DISCUSSION: In southern France, imported penicilliosis marneffei may be misdiagnosed as visceral leishmaniasis.

Transmission history of major China-prevalent Mycobacterium tuberculosis sub-lineages in East Asia.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) is distributed globally and has posed a severe threat to human health throughout history. In this study, we analyzed whole-genome data from the four major MTBC sub-lineages prevalent in China (L2.2, L4.2, L4.4, and L4.5) to reconstruct their transmission and expansion histories across East Asia and parts of Central Asia. We found that L2.2 has established a highly connected transmission network centered in Southern China, whereas L4.2 is characterized by cross-border transmission between Central Asia and Western China, and L4.4 and L4.5 exhibit repeate

Forecasting greenhouse gas emissions in South Asia: a time series analysis using ARIMA models (1975-2030).

Based on past data from 1975 to 2023, this paper forecasts South Asia's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through 2030 using the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. The forecasts indicate a sustained rise in emissions across most South Asian nations, with India experiencing the most significant absolute increase, reaching approximately 4610 MtCO₂ by 2030. Bangladesh and Pakistan are expected to experience considerable growth (308.4 and 602.3 MtCO₂, respectively). In contrast, Afghanistan's emissions are projected to remain below 30 MtCO₂ with minor fluctuations, while smaller

Contribution of nosocomial transmission to Klebsiella pneumoniae neonatal sepsis in Africa and South Asia: An observational study of infection clusters inferred from pathogen genomics and temporal data.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is the leading cause of sepsis among neonates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa and Asia, contributing substantially to the overall burden of antimicrobial-resistant infections and mortality among neonates globally. Pathogen sequencing has been used to investigate case clusters and confirm nosocomial transmission in a small number of neonatal units. Here we utilise pathogen sequence data to estimate the fraction of K. pneumoniae neonatal sepsis attributable to nosocomial transmission in African and South Asian countries. METHODS AND FINDIN

Membrane sweeping at term to promote spontaneous labor and reduce the likelihood of formal labor induction for prolonged pregnancy, in South Asia and the world: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Membrane sweeping promotes the spontaneous onset of labor, reducing the need for formal labor induction. In addition to the safety profile, membrane sweep is a cost-effective measure in a low-resource setting like South Asia. OBJECTIVES: To the best of our knowledge, previous reviews and meta-analyses have not explored the timing and frequency of membrane sweeping or its association with the period of gestation (POG) and parity. Additionally, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the inclusion of older studies and the analyses conducted regardless of ethnicity in p

Dengue and chikungunya interface in South and Southeast Asia: Epidemiology, challenges and future directions.

Dengue and chikungunya are major arboviral diseases imposing an increasing public health burden across South and Southeast Asia. Both viruses are transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, vectors that thrive in rapidly urbanizing and climate-sensitive environments. Dengue has become hyperendemic over recent decades, with increasingly severe and frequent outbreaks, while chikungunya has re-emerged since the mid-2000s, driven by viral adaptation and expanded vector competence. Their concurrent circulation presents substantial challenges, including overlapping clinical manifest

A Growing Triple Burden of Malnutrition in South Asia Due to the Cumulative Effect of Double Burden of Malnutrition and Parasitic Infections in South Asian Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review.

Background and Aims: In recent decades, lifestyle patterns have undergone significant transformations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These changes have contributed to a dual nutritional crisis characterized by the coexistence of undernutrition and overweight/obesity, commonly referred to as the Double Burden of Malnutrition (DBM). Compounding this issue is the persistent prevalence of parasitic infections, due to poor personal hygiene and sanitation practices which further exacerbate nutritional imbalances, creating what is now recognized as the Triple Burden of Mal

Efforts toward the Elimination of Visceral Leishmaniasis in South Asia: A Review of Progress in Bhutan.

Leishmaniases are a group of diseases under the category of neglected tropical diseases targeted for global elimination. However, they continue to pose major clinical and public health problems, especially among those living in poor socioeconomic conditions. Here, we summarize leishmaniasis elimination efforts in Bhutan. Between 1994 and 2022, Bhutan recorded 54 cases of leishmaniasis across 14 of its 20 districts. There are seven species of Phlebotomus and three species of Sergentomyia sand flies documented in the country. At a subnational level, all endemic districts recorded a visceral leis

Recent advances to overcome the burden of Japanese encephalitis: A zoonotic infection with problematic early detection.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a vector-borne neurotropic disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) associated with high mortality rate distributed from Eastern and Southern Asia to Northern Queensland (Australia). The challenges in early detection and lack of point-of-care biomarkers make it the most important Flavivirus causing encephalitis. There is no specific treatment for the disease, although vaccines are licenced. In this review, we focussed on point-of-care biomarkers as early detection tools and developing the effective therapeutic agents that could halt JE. We have also pro

Mathematical model estimation of dengue fever transmission risk from Southeast and South Asia into Japan between 2016 and 2018.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito infected with the dengue virus. Dengue is one of the most common infectious diseases in the world, and its incidence is rapidly increasing. We estimated the risk of dengue importation from endemic countries to Japan and the transmission risk within Japan using data collected between 2016 and 2018. METHODS: We conducted simulations that included the number of reported dengue infections and travelers per month in ten countries in Southeast and South Asia. RESULTS: The estimated importation risks

Mapping drivers of life expectancy change in Asia from 1990 to 2023.

Life expectancy is a key indicator of population health and an important guide for health policy1,2. Although Asia represents approximately 60% of the global population, studies of longitudinal trends in life expectancy and their underlying drivers across Asian countries remain limited, with most previous research focused on western or high-income settings3-6. Here we provide a comprehensive analysis of life expectancy, cause-specific mortality and risk factors in 1990-2023 across 34 Asian countries and territories, utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 20231,7. Life expectanc

What are the Experiences of and Interventions for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse in South Asia? A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may experience emotional, social, and psychological difficulties, heightened due to the interpersonal nature of harm. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of trauma-focused treatments in the West, a culturally specific understanding of the needs of and treatments for survivors in South Asia is still in its infancy. The study aimed to systematically review research findings on the mental health impacts of CSA on adult survivors and current treatment approaches and their efficacy and acceptability in South Asia. Seven databases (Scopus, Ovid, CIN

Nutritional advice for patients with obesity and prediabetes.

South Asians are more prone to obesity and prediabetes due to a combination of non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors. While non-modifiable factors are largely unchangeable, addressing modifiable factors particularly dietary patterns is crucial for intervention. As South Asian dietary practices differ substantially from other populations, international dietary recommendations may not always be appropriate. Therefore, this review synthesizes South Asian-specific nutrition advice. Evidence was drawn from interventional studies involving South Asians identified through a systematic search, an
