AIMS: To examine the association between the assessments of certified nursing assistants (CNAs) on resident's oral self-care function and resident's oral hygiene outcomes in three North Carolina assisted-living (AL) facilities.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty-five dentate AL residents were included in this secondary analysis. CNAs were asked to rate the AL residents' overall oral self-care function using a 6-point Likert scale. Their assessments were then compared with the objective, performance-based Dental Activities Test and the oral hygiene and gingival health measures. The analysis showed tha

INTRODUCTION: Nature experienced with peers may mitigate the harmful outcomes of loneliness on health and wellbeing. The H2020 RECETAS 'Friends in Nature (FiN)-Helsinki' group intervention for lonely older adults in Helsinki assisted living facilities (ALFs) aimed to investigate the effects on participants' loneliness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We also examined factors influencing effects between the intervention and the outcomes.
METHODS: Lonely participants were recruited from 22 ALFs in Helsinki area, Finland and randomised into two groups: (i) nature-based group intervent

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is common among nursing home residents, and it is also thought to be a problem in assisted living (AL). However, we lack research on loneliness in AL. Our objectives were to assess changes in risk-adjusted prevalence of loneliness in AL, and facility-level variations in loneliness before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and facility-level factors associated with AL resident loneliness during the pandemic.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This population-based, repeated cross-sectional study used Resident Assessment Instrument-Home Care (RAI-HC) data (01/2017

OBJECTIVES: Meaning in life is closely linked to physical, cognitive, and mental health in older adulthood, yet little is known about how low-income older adults residing in Medicaid-funded assisted living facilities (MALF) experience and sustain meaning. This qualitative descriptive study explored how MALF residents make and ascribe meaning in their lives to inform person-centered care and intervention development in this understudied population.
METHOD: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study guided by Wong's PURE Model of meaning in life (Purpose, Understanding, Responsible action, En

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive decline is common among the oldest-old, particularly in assisted living facilities (ALFs). This pilot randomized controlled trial examined the effects of aerobic, resistance, and mind-body exercises on cognition in ALF residents aged ≥80 years, and the feasibility and safety of exercise programs.
METHODS: In a 24-week four-arm trial in one Shanghai ALF, 76 participants (aged 86.8 ± 4.1; 72.4% female) were randomized to aerobic, resistance, mind-body (simplified Tai Chi), or non-exercise control groups. Thirty-minute exercise sessions were delivered three times weekly for

PURPOSE: Pressure injuries are a persistent problem in assisted living facilities (ALFs), especially among patients aged ≥65 years who have limited mobility. Enhancing nursing knowledge and adherence to evidence-based prevention strategies is essential. The current quality improvement project implemented the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Pressure Injury Prevention Toolkit to strengthen nursing practices in an ALF rehabilitation unit.
METHOD: Over 6 weeks, 11 nurses participated in modular workshops on the Braden Scale, skin assessments, repositioning, nutrition, support su

Nowadays, various harmful indoor pollutants especially including bacteria and residual formaldehyde (HCHO) seriously threaten human health and reduce the quality of public life. Herein, a universal substrate-independence finishing approach for efficiently solving these hybrid indoor threats is demonstrated, in which amine-quinone network (AQN) was employed as reduction agent to guide in-situ growth of Ag@MnO2 particles, and also acted as an adhesion interlayer to firmly anchor nanoparticles onto diverse textiles, especially for cotton fabrics. In contrast with traditional hydrothermal or calci

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is common among older adults in institutional settings. It leads to adverse effects on health and wellbeing, for which nature contact with peers in turn may have positive impact. However, the effects of nature engagement among older adults have not been studied in randomised controlled trials (RCT). The "Friends in Nature" (FIN) group intervention RCT for lonely older adults in Helsinki assisted living facilities (ALFs) aims to explore the effects of peer-related nature experiences on loneliness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In this study we aim describe th

Current legislation requires pharmacist medication regimen reviews (MRRs) for residents of nursing facilities, but not for adult family homes or assisted living facilities. However, residents living in adult family homes and assisted living facilities, like residents of nursing facilities, often have complicated medication histories. The goal of this study was to evaluate the potential benefits of on-site MRRs for long-term care residents, specifically those living in adult family homes and assisted living facilities. Comprehensive MRRs were conducted at three different facilities (two adult f

BACKGROUND: Considerable attention has been given to the appropriateness of mental and medical health care provided to residents of certain assisted living facilities specialized for the severely mentally ill. However, there exists little objective evidence regarding the level of services provided by these facilities in general.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: To compare the use of mental and medical health services among persons with schizophrenia who were residing in assisted living facilities compared to those received by patients living independently and those who were homeless.
METHODS: Medicaid cla

This article estimates the prevalence and identifies risk factors of resident aggression and abuse in assisted living facilities. We conducted multivariate analyses of resident-level data from an analytic sample of 6,848 older Americans in the 2010 National Survey of Residential Care Facilities. Nationwide, 7.6% of assisted living residents engaged in physical aggression or abuse toward other residents or staff in the past month, 9.5% of residents had exhibited verbal aggression or abuse, and 2.0% of resident engaged in sexual aggression or abuse toward other residents or staff. Dementia and s

Administrators of 94 assisted living facilities in Michigan completed a 19-item survey about the extent of mental health problems of residents and how such problems were addressed. In 45 facilities more than half of the residents were reported to be cognitively impaired. The two most common problems were dementia and depression. The most common problematic behaviors were resistance to care and wandering. Two-thirds of the facilities conducted some type of mental health evaluation at admission, and two-thirds conducted evaluations as needed. The most common treatment barriers were patient refus

BACKGROUND: Training programs help dementia care staff handle residents' behavioral symptoms in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. However, it is unclear how feeling well-prepared from such training relates to experiences of physical and verbal aggression from residents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether perceived training preparedness was related to experiences of physical and verbal aggression from residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities using data from a large, nationally representative dementia care workforce sample.
METHODS: This study was an

Pharmacists can offer a variety of medication and consulting services to elderly people living in the community and in assisted living facilities. Such services may include reviewing drug therapy regimens to ensure that medications are appropriate, effective, and safe for a specific patient; determining whether a sign, symptom, syndrome, or decline in function is medication-related; and identifying medications that may cause or aggravate common geriatric problems. Pharmacists providing "senior care" services talk with patients and caregivers to pinpoint medication issues, work closely with nur

Residential care facilities (RCFs) provide 24/7 care to older adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities and aim to provide person-centered care (PCC). Maintaining residents' autonomy is important to provide PCC, for example, with shared decision-making (SDM). Residents are largely dependent on multiple stakeholders, which could jeopardize their autonomy, especially regarding unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol. This case study explores the dynamics of multiple stakeholders around four RCF residents regarding their alcohol and/or tobacco use. Four RCF resid

Residential care facility may provide a transition between living at home and a nursing home for dependent older people or an alternative to nursing homes. The objective of this review was to compare mortality and hospitalizations of older adults living in residential care facilities with those living in nursing homes or in the community. We searched Medline, Scopus and Web of Science from inception to December 2022. Fifteen cohort studies with 6 months to 10 years of follow-up were included. The unadjusted relative risk (RR) of mortality was superior in nursing homes than in residential care
