Leishmaniasis is a complex disease caused by over 20 Leishmania species that primarily affects populations with poor socioeconomic conditions. Currently available drugs for treating leishmaniasis include amphotericin B, paromomycin, and pentavalent antimonials, which have been associated with several limitations, such as low efficacy, the development of drug resistance, and high toxicity. Natural products are an interesting source of new drug candidates. The Asteraceae family includes more than 23 000 species worldwide. Secondary metabolites that can be found in species from this family have b

Echinops davuricus Trevir. (Asteraceae) is a perennial medicinal herb. In this study, we sequenced and assembled its complete chloroplast genome. The plastome spans 153,168 bp with an overall GC content of 37.76%, showing a typical quadripartite structure. It encodes 131 genes in total, including 87 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 36 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on whole plastomes strongly supports the monophyly of both Echinops and Cardueae. This work enriches genomic resources for Echinops and provides a valuable basis for its phylo

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: While much research has examined the relation between leaf traits and herbivory, very little is known about the interaction between floral traits, particularly biochemical traits, and florivory. We investigated patterns between floral traits and florivory across multiple species using phylogenetic comparative approaches to enhance our understanding of the evolution of plant-florivore interactions.•
METHODS: The relation between the intensity of florivory and five biochemical traits (concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, water, and total phenolics

In this study, the antiulcerogenic effect of essential oil from Baccharis dracunculifolia was evaluated using the model of acute gastric lesions induced by ethanol. The ulcerative lesion index (ULI) was significantly reduced by oral administration of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia at doses of 50, 250 and 500 mg/kg which reduced the lesions by 42.79, 45.70 and 61.61%, respectively. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil from B. dracunculifolia by GC showed that this was composed mainly of mono- and sesquiterpenes and the majority compound was nerolidol. Therefore

Restriction site variation in chloroplast DNAs (cpDNAs) of Coreopsis section Coreopsis was employed to assess divergence and phylogenetic relationships among the nine species of the section. A total of fourteen restriction site mutations and one length mutation was detected. Cladistic analysis of the cpDNA data produced a phylogeny that is different in several respects from previous hypotheses. CpDNA mutations divide the section into two groups, with the two perennial species C. auriculata and C. pubescens lacking any derived restriction site changes. The other seven species are united by five

Plants from the genus Pterocaulon are popularly used as antifungal and wound-healing agents. Such activities have been related to coumarins, which are abundant in those plants. Coumarins are soluble in organic solvents, such as hexane and dichloromethane, and some of them are also soluble in hot water. Considering that infusion and decoctions of these plants are used in traditional medicine, the aim of this study was to identify and quantify the coumarins in the aqueous extract of Pterocaulon balansae. The aqueous extract was obtained by dynamic maceration and the compounds were characterized

In the course of selection of new bioactive compounds from Brazilian flora, the crude MeOH extract from the leaves of Baccharis retusa DC. (Asteraceae) showed potential against Leishmania sp. and Trypanosoma cruzi. Chromatographic fractionation of the dichloromethane phase from MeOH extract yielded great amounts of the bioactive derivative, which was characterized as 5,6,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavanone. The structure of this compound was established on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis, mainly nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: The genus Anacyclus, distributed across the western Mediterranean Basin, has gained attention as a model system for studying reproductive biology and evolutionary genomics. The genus displays a remarkable diversity in capitulum morphologies, ranging from rayed to rayless forms, while also exhibiting substantial variation in genome size within a context of extensive homoploid hybridisation. However, previous studies are based on fragmented sampling, with the northern Iberian Peninsula underrepresented, and often rely on single individuals per species for genome size estimates.
