Occupational asthma in a hairdressing salon.

Occupational asthma among hairdressers has been recognised for some years and cases of work related asthma due to hair bleaches containing persulphates and hair dyes have been reported. The extent of the disease among hairdressers remains unknown. An investigation was carried out on an entire hairdressing salon, which specialised in hair bleaching and colouring and which employed 23 staff. On the basis of history and specific and non-specific bronchial provocation testing, four out of 23 staff were found to have occupational asthma due to the persulphate salts contained in hair bleaches. Only

Occupational Asthma Without Nonspecific Bronchial Hyperresponsiveness.

BACKGROUND: The absence of nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness (NSBH) has been documented in a substantial proportion of workers with occupational asthma (OA). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and inflammatory characteristics associated with the absence of baseline NSBH in a cohort of subjects with OA ascertained by a positive specific inhalation challenge (SIC). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 1068 subjects who completed an SIC with various occupational agents at 3 tertiary centers. RESULTS: Among 377 subjects with a positive SIC, 63 (16.7%) did not exhibit b

[Uncontrolled occupational asthma: Talking about comorbidities].

INTRODUCTION: Occupational asthma is a disease where the pathophysiological characteristics of asthma are linked to repeated exposure to a sensitizing agent present in the workspace. Assessment of patients with severe asthma to identify and manage comorbidities improves asthma control and is recommended in international guidelines on the management of severe asthma. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 49-year-old patient, nonsmoker, without atopy, who had severe work-related asthma due to exposure to isocyanates, which was uncontrolled despite the avoidance of the occupational exposure and m

[Occupational asthma caused by buckwheat flour].

Buckwheat flour, mainly used for pancakes, may induce asthma following inhalation and anaphylactic reactions following ingestion. These allergic reactions are mediated by specific IgE and may be confirmed by skin test and radio-allergo-sorbent test. The occupational asthma of a patient working in pancake restaurant was confirmed by specific challenge test with a computerised device to generate particles. A very small amount of buckwheat flour (10 micrograms) induced an immediate fall of the FEV1 to 56% of the initial value. No bronchial reaction was observed with lactose nor with wheat flour.

Occupational asthma due to different spices.

We describe a 27-year-old subject who developed rhinitis and asthma symptoms 1 year after starting to prepare a certain kind of sausage. He was previously diagnosed as having allergy to coconut, banana, and kiwi and allergic rhinitis to horse, cat, dog, and cow. A positive immediate skin prick test (SPT) for paprika (dry powder of Capsicum annuum [Solanaceae]), coriander (Coriandrum sativum [umbelliferous]), and mace (shell of nutmeg, Myristica fragrans [Myristicaceae]) at a concentration of 10% (w/v) was obtained. SPT with other sausage ingredients, mites, pollens, and molds were negative. By

[Occupational asthma caused by organic substances].

Occupational asthma (OA) to organic substances is frequently related to IgE-dependent hypersensitivity. New etiological agents are latex and vegetal gums, in health care personnel as in carpet-making manufactures. Bakers are exposed to numerous allergens: wheat and cereal flours, sesame and other seed proteins, alpha-amylase and other enzymes. Alpha-amylase extracted from Aspergillus orizae is a potent allergen. Plant derived materials have been identified as allergens in the floral industry (Ficus, Ginseng, Gypsophila, etc). The accurate diagnosis relies upon a thorough history, completed by

Occupational asthma induced by fish exposure.

Occupational asthma triggered by inhaling fish-derived aerosols is estimated to affect 2-8% of exposed individuals. This primarily affects workers in the fish processing industry. Fishmongers, rarely experience this issue, as recent research found no significant difference in asthma rates compared to a control group. We report the case of a fishmonger who presented with a 1-year history of rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. The patient attributed these symptoms to his occupational exposure within the fish market environment, which worsened in the cold storage warehouse. Symptoms improved during h

Occupational asthma caused by triglycidyl isocyanurate.

BACKGROUND: Several cases of allergic contact dermatitis, two cases of occupational asthma from over one decade ago and one case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis have been documented in painters who use polyester powder paint containing triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC). METHODS: We report a 28-year-old female who, 4 months after beginning work in a powder-coating factory, developed asthma-like symptoms. In her workplace, aluminium frames were treated with an electrostatic powder paint containing 2.5-10% TGIC. RESULTS: Serial peak-flow measurements performed during both working and non-working

Occupational asthma induced by garlic dust.

BACKGROUND: Garlic dust has not been a frequently encountered cause of IgE-mediated disease. OBJECTIVE: We report on 12 patients (all of them garlic workers) with the clinical criteria for occupational asthma. METHODS: Skin prick tests and serum-specific IgE determinations were performed with common inhalants, garlic, and other members of the Liliaceae family (onion, leek, and asparagus). Bronchial challenge test with garlic powder was performed in all patients. Garlic and onion extract proteins were separated by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Occupational asthma caused by Papaver somniferum.

Twenty eight workers of a pharmaceutical factory were studied. The company produced morphine and other alkaloids extracting the active principles from shells of Papaver somniferum. Six of the exposed subjects had clinical symptoms of sensitization to this allergen and positive skin tests. A bronchial provocation test was found to be positive on 4 workers and specific IgE could be found on the 6 sensitized patients by an ELISA and a RAST test using an aqueous extract of P. somniferum. A histamine release using the same antigen was also positive in the 4 samples from sensitized patients availabl

Clinical and inflammatory features of occupational asthma caused by persulphate salts in comparison with asthma associated with occupational rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: The relationships between asthma and rhinitis are still a crucial point in respiratory allergy and have scarcely been analysed in occupational setting. We aimed to compare the clinical and inflammatory features of subjects with occupational asthma only (OA) to subjects with OA associated to occupational rhinitis (OAR) caused by persulphate salts. METHODS: The clinical charts of 26 subjects diagnosed in our Unit as respiratory allergy caused by ammonium persulphate (AP), confirmed by specific inhalation challenge (SIC), were reviewed. Twenty-two out of twenty-six patients underwent

Review of Diagnostic Challenges in Occupational Asthma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational asthma (OA) is one of the most frequent occupational diseases and its diagnosis is often difficult. This review summarizes its current diagnostic challenges. RECENT FINDINGS: OA is associated with significant health and socio-economic burden. It is underdiagnosed and physicians need to adopt a stepwise approach to confirm the diagnosis. Although early removal from exposure to the offending agent is associated with a better prognosis, physicians should try to confirm the diagnosis of work-related asthma before taking a worker off work. A proper occupational and

[Occupational asthma in a structure nail maker].

Chemicals that may cause allergy are being used in structure nails. In this case report two structure nail makers are described, who were diagnosed with occupational asthma in clinical studies. The studies included an inhalational exposure simulating the work. The causative agents of occupational asthma are apparently the acrylate compounds contained in the chemicals; use of these compounds has previously been linked with allergic contact dermatitis and asthma. Since the making of structure nails involves health risks, such work requires appropriate premises and personal protection.

Occupational asthma due to carrot in a cook.

BACKGROUND: Few previous reports of carrot-induced asthma have been confirmed by objective tests. Hypersensitivity to carrot is frequently associated with allergy to Apiaceae spices and sensitization to birch and mugwort pollens. CLINICAL CASE: A 40-year-old cook woman was seen with sneezing, rhinorrhea, contact urticaria and wheezing within few minutes of handling or cutting raw carrots. She needed to leave out of the kitchen while the other cooks cut raw carrots. METHODS AND RESULTS: Skin tests were positive to carrot, celery, aniseed and fennel. Rubbing test with fresh carrot was positive
