Relationship between back pain and poor performance in show jumping athletic horses.

BACKGROUND: Showjumping athletic horses are frequently affected by back pain, which in turn influences their performance and equestrian activities. AIM: The aim of the present study was to determine the etiological factors predisposing to back problems in show jumping horses and how to diagnose, and manage them. METHODS: A total of 75 cases (45 geldings and 30 mares, aged between 8 and 23 years and weighing 420-550 Kg) with histories suggestive of back problems and low competitive ability as show jumping were used in this study. The evaluation of data was based on the inputs of case history,

Perceptual-Cognitive Function and Unplanned Athletic Movement Task Performance: A Systematic Review.

The performance of choice-reaction tasks during athletic movement has been demonstrated to evoke unfavorable biomechanics in the lower limb. However, the mechanism of this observation is unknown. We conducted a systematic review examining the association between (1) the biomechanical and functional safety of unplanned sports-related movements (e.g., jumps/runs with a spontaneously indicated landing leg/cutting direction) and (2) markers of perceptual-cognitive function (PCF). A literature search in three databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar) identified five relevant articles. Th

Transcranial direct current stimulation to enhance athletic performance outcome in experienced bodybuilders.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is currently under investigation as a promising technique for enhancement of athletic performance through modulating cortical excitability. Through consecutive randomization, 12 experienced bodybuilders were randomly assigned to two arms receiving either sham or real tDCS over the primary motor cortex (leg area) and left temporal cortex (T3) for 13 minutes in the first session. After 72 hours, both groups received the inverse stimulation. After the brain stimulation, cerebral hemodynamic response (using frontopolar hemoencephalography) was examine

Improvement of athletic performance with haptics: results of the POWER-UP Trial.

BACKGROUND: Adult athletic performance in most sports relies on adequate muscle tone, strength, flexibility, and movement coordination. Neuromuscular training to improve athletic performance has been embraced in athletic programs aimed at aiding college athletes seeking a future professional sports career or high achievement in national/international athletic competitions. Since strength, power, and endurance are essential attributes for athletes playing sports, the aim of this study was to assess whether the use of haptic patch technology could improve muscular strength, power, and endurance.

A race against time: timing constraints of cardiac filling and athletic performance.

Cardiac filling is constrained by a reduced ejection time and diastolic period as heart rate increases during exercise. We compared cardiac filling dynamics in endurance athletes and controls during exercise to determine how athletic status influences hemodynamic constraints during exercise. Thirty-two participants (21 endurance athletes and 11 controls) underwent exercise echocardiography at 20, 40, and 60% of peak power output. We measured cardiac timing, stroke volume (SV), and flow rates (SV indexed to body surface area and phase duration). Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. Ath

Circulating Testosterone as the Hormonal Basis of Sex Differences in Athletic Performance.

Elite athletic competitions have separate male and female events due to men's physical advantages in strength, speed, and endurance so that a protected female category with objective entry criteria is required. Prior to puberty, there is no sex difference in circulating testosterone concentrations or athletic performance, but from puberty onward a clear sex difference in athletic performance emerges as circulating testosterone concentrations rise in men because testes produce 30 times more testosterone than before puberty with circulating testosterone exceeding 15-fold that of women at any age

Unlocking Performance: Pharmacogenomic Insights for Athletes.

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genetic differences influence drug responses, offering a safer and more effective prescribing model. While pharmacogenomics is well-established in specialties such as oncology and psychiatry, its application in sports medicine remains limited. Athletes frequently use medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and these medications have well-documented gene-drug interactions. This review explores pharmacogenomics considerations for these commonly used substances in athletic populations, emp

Iron Status and Physical Performance in Athletes.

Iron is an important mineral in the body, essential for muscle function and oxygen transport. Adequate levels of iron in the blood are necessary for athletes, as iron-deficiency anemia can reduce physical performance. Several studies have investigated iron status and supplementation in iron-deficient athletes, and determined how physical strain can change iron balance and markers related to iron status. The question of how to influence and optimize iron status, as well as other markers that can affect iron metabolism, has been less thoroughly investigated. Therefore, the aim of this review is

[Statistical deviations in high-performance athletes].

Between 1978 and 1984, 1323 high level athletes were tested at the Sports sciences institute of the Swiss federal sports school. During these investigations, several characteristic variations of body statics were measured. Analysis of the pooled data reveal a link of statistical significance between certain sports and several abnormalities of lower limbs static. As it was a retrospective investigation, we cannot be sure of a causal relationship between the reported effects. Our principal aim however was to publish this somewhat extensive set of data, in view of the general dearth of such scien

Minerals: exercise performance and supplementation in athletes.

This paper examines whether mineral supplements are necessary for athletes, and whether these supplements will enhance performance. Macrominerals (calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) and trace minerals (zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, and iron) are described. Calcium supplements are important for the health of bones. Athletes tend to have enhanced calcium status as assessed by bone mineral density, with the notable exception of female amenorrhoeic athletes. Magnesium status is adequate for most athletes, and there is no evidence that magnesium supplements can enhance performance. Phosphorus

Meta-analysis of the effects of plyometric training on athletic performance in handball athletes.

In this study, the impact of Plyometric Training (PT) on handball players' performance was explored. Databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost were systematically searched, using mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the calculation result indicators as effect sizes. 11 studies involving 302 subjects were included. Results showed that PT was correlated with improved jumping ability: countermovement jump (MD = 4.14, P < 0.00001) and squat jump (MD = 3.83, P < 0.00001). In change-of-direction ability, T-half performance improved (MD=-0.55, P < 0.0001). As for the

Effects of combined balance and plyometric training on athletic performance: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Plyometric training is an effective method for improving explosive power, while balance training plays a pivotal role in enhancing agility and dynamic stability. Recently, combined balance and plyometric training (hereafter referred to as combined training) has gained increasing attention. This approach integrates plyometric exercises with separate balance training components. However, whether combined training offers superior benefits over single-mode training remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of combined training on athletic perform

Relation between core strength, core stability, and athletic performance-a mediation analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Core strength and its control in movement, also called core stability, are crucial for athletic performance. However, there is no consensus in the scientific literature regarding the extent of the relation between core strength, core stability, and athletic performance. According to the functional anatomy of the core, it seems that core stability indirectly influences the relation between core strength and athletic performance. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the relation between core strength, core stability, and athletic performance. METHODS: Forty-one adult sport stude

Perceived effects of emotion intensity on athletic performance: a contingency-based individualized approach.

This study, based on the Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning model, examined the perceived effect of idiosyncratic emotions and bodily symptoms on athletic performance along the entire emotion-intensity range. The participants were 35 elite Italian athletes, 16 women and 19 men, competing in either figure skating or gymnastics. Idiosyncratic emotional descriptors were rated on Borg's CR-10 scale to estimate the perceived impact on performance and hedonic tone for each level of emotion-intensity range. The findings revealed a large interindividual variability in the content of emotions as w
