Integrative Taxonomy of Didymozoids Parasitizing Thunnus obesus (Scombridae) from Southwest Atlantic Ocean: A New Genus and Species.

The global fauna of Didymozoidae infecting fishes is very diverse and includes 270 species. Integrative taxonomic studies in this group are rare, and genetic data are lacking for the molecular identification of species. In this study, a new genus and species, Platodidymocystis yamagutii n. gen., n. sp., is described based on morphological and genetic analyses. The new genus is allocated to Didymozoinae but differs from all other genera of this subfamily, mainly by the morphology of the testes and ovary. The genetic analysis and molecular phylogeny using 28S rDNA and ITS2 markers showed P. yama

Relationship between trace element concentrations and body length in dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is a popular seafood choice worldwide, however, except for mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se), little is known about the concentration of other trace elements in dolphinfish muscle tissue, especially in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. This study investigated the relationship between body length (61 to 94 cm fork length) and trace element [silver (Ag), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), Hg, manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), Se, and zinc (Zn)] concentrations in muscle tissue of dolphinfish caught off Long Island, New

Mercury exposure and Selenium interactions in South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) from Patagonia, Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were analyzed in diverse internal tissues (muscle n = 10, liver n = 10, kidney n = 9 and lung n = 8), and the skin (n = 10) of -the South American sea lion (SASL)-stranded on the beaches of marine protected areas in Patagonia, Argentina. Elemental concentrations (expressed in μg g-1 DW (Dry Weight)) were determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). Mercury accumulated primarily in the liver, followed by the kidney, muscle, lung, and skin. Selenium also showed highest accumulation in the liver, followed by the kidney, lung, musc

Holocene ocean-atmosphere coupling and Mediterranean sensitivity to Atlantic circulation: Lessons from the Late Bronze Age collapse.

Climate variability has profoundly influenced societies in the semiarid Eastern Mediterranean. Proxy records indicate progressive mid-Holocene drying culminating in severe droughts ∼1250 BCE, coincident with the Late Bronze Age collapse (1300 to 900 BCE). Using the EC-Earth3-Tr8K transient Holocene simulation, we reconstruct regional hydroclimate evolution and its underlying mechanisms. The model reproduces a gradual orbitally driven aridification, spatially heterogeneous across the region, with persistent drying in the Levant but enhanced effective moisture in parts of the Balkans and Anatoli

Monitoring of mercury in the mesopelagic domain of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans using body feathers of Bulwer's petrel as a bioindicator.

Global mercury pollution has markedly and consistently grown over the past 70 years (although with regional variations in trends) and is a source of major concern. Mercury contamination is particularly prevalent in biota of the mesopelagic layers of the open ocean, but these realms are little studied, and we lack a large scale picture of contamination in living organisms of this region. The Bulwer's petrel Bulweria bulwerii, a species of migratory seabird, is a highly specialised predator of mesopelagic fish and squid, and therefore can be used as a bioindicator for the mesopelagic domain. Survey of Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp. antibodies in cetaceans and manatees of the Amazon basin and Atlantic Ocean, Brazil.

Aquatic mammals can act as sentinels of emerging and resurging pathogens in the environment. Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp. are 2 zoonotic pathogens relevant to aquatic mammals, and their detection can be used to assess pathogen exposure. In this study, serum from 84 individuals-63 cetaceans (families Iniidae, n = 37; Delphinidae, n = 22; and Kogiidae, n = 4) and 21 West Indian manatees Trichechus manatus-was tested by the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and a commercial competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) for detecting Brucella spp. antibodies, and the microscopic agglutination

Genetic identification of Anisakis spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from cetaceans of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean: ecological and zoogeographical implications.

Adult Anisakis Dujardin, 1845 were found in two specimens of killer whale Orcinus orca and one specimen of franciscana Pontoporia blainvillei stranded from off the coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Genetic identification of the nematodes (N = 144) was performed by sequence analysis of the mitochondrial (mtDNA cox2) and the nuclear (nas 10 nDNA) gene loci. Anisakis pegreffii and Anisakis berlandi were detected in the two individuals of O. orca, while Anisakis typica and A. pegreffii were identified in P. blainvillei. Morphological and morphometric analysis also carried out on adult spe

Tracing mercury sources and transfer pathways in Pacific and Atlantic Ocean tuna and billfish using mercury stable isotopes.

Tuna and billfish indicates Hg and MeHg accumulation through marine food webs, yet the causes of interspecies and interoceanic variation remain unclear. This study analyzed THg, MeHg, and Hg isotopes in seven tuna and billfish species from the Pacific and Atlantic, revealing bioaccumulation pattern in top marine predators. Blue marlin (a kind of billfish) showed significantly higher THg concentrations (1824 ± 1558 ng g-1 ww) and lower MeHg/THg ratios (28.6 ± 17.3 %) compared to other species. BAFs estimated via Monte Carlo simulations revealed species-specific differences, with MeHg values 16-

MENINGOENCEPHALITIS IN STRANDED SMOOTH DOGFISH (MUSTELUS CANIS) INFECTED BY PHILASTERIDES DICENTRARCHI (PHILASTERIDA: PHILASTERIDAE) IN THE NORTHWESTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN.

During August through September 2018, strandings and mortalities of smooth dogfish (Mustelus canis [Mitchill, 1815 [Carcharhiniformes: Triakidae]) occurred on Brighton Beach and Coney Island Beach (Brooklyn, New York). Each of the 8 smooth dogfish examined grossly exhibited hemorrhagic meninges, turbid and pink to red cerebrospinal fluid, and soft and friable olfactory lobes. Wet mounts of the cerebrospinal fluid and brain showed intense infection by scuticociliates in each smooth dogfish. Histopathologic examination of the infected brain revealed intensity-dependent necrotizing meningoencepha

The first record of burrowing goby Trypauchen vagina (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae: Amblyopinae) from the Atlantic Ocean.

The burrowing goby Trypauchen vagina has been reported from Brazil for the first time. This goby occurs naturally in the Indo-Pacific region, where it is typically found burrowed in the bottom substrata of marine or brackish waters. Given its rapid development, extended longevity and multiple spawning cycles, the species is represented by large populations in Asian countries. The authors discuss the occurrence of this species in Brazilian waters and conclude that it was introduced via the ballast water of vessels arriving from Asia. They also compare this exotic taxon with the native Brazilian

Toxoplasma gondii in stranded marine mammals from the North Sea and Eastern Atlantic Ocean: Findings and diagnostic difficulties.

The occurrence of the zoonotic protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii in marine mammals remains a poorly understood phenomenon. In this study, samples from 589 marine mammal species and 34 European otters (Lutra lutra), stranded on the coasts of Scotland, Belgium, France, The Netherlands and Germany, were tested for the presence of T. gondii. Brain samples were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of parasite DNA. Blood and muscle fluid samples were tested for specific antibodies using a modified agglutination test (MAT), a commercial multi-species enzyme-linked immunosorben

Genetic characterization of Anisakis typica and Anisakis physeteris from marine mammals and fish from the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil.

Until now, Anisakis typica has been the sole anisakid identified by means of genetic markers from the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil. In this study we developed, and applied to larvae and adults, an A. typica-specific molecular identification protocol based on the complete intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Anisakids from the dolphin Sotalia guianensis and from the frigate tuna, Auxis thazard, caught off the coast of Brazil, were processed using two DNA extraction methods. Molecular diagnosis identified A. typica in 13 of 15 samples. Complete ITS analysis showed that the remaining two isol

Stable isotopes and metals and metalloids in the smallest Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios) reported to date from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Megamouth Shark is a circumtropically distributed filter-feeding species with only some records from the Atlantic Ocean available to date. In this study, a very young specimen, possibly a neonate, found floating off Pedra do Sal Beach, Piauí, Brazil, in 2018, was analyzed for stable isotopes and metals and metalloids. This research opens a window for investigating aspects of the biology of this scarcely studied shark at this developmental stage in the Western Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Stable isotope values were δ13C = -18.66 ± 0.15‰ and δ15N = 5.93 ± 0.09‰, likely reflecting maternal isot

Differential gene expression patterns related to lipid metabolism in response to ocean acidification in larvae and juveniles of Atlantic cod.

Elevated environmental carbon dioxide (pCO2) levels have been found to cause organ damage in the early life stages of different commercial fish species, including Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). To illuminate the underlying mechanisms causing pathologies in the intestines, the kidney, the pancreas and the liver in response to elevated pCO2, we examined related gene expression patterns in Atlantic cod reared for two months under three different pCO2 regimes: 380 μatm (control), 1800 μatm (medium) and 4200 μatm (high). We extracted RNA from whole fish sampled during the larval (32 dph) and early ju

Ecotonal marine regions - ecotonal parasite communities: helminth assemblages in the convergence of masses of water in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

With the aim of evaluating the utility of marine parasites as indicators of ecotonal regions in the marine environment, we analysed data on assemblages of long-lived larval parasites of Zenopsis conchifer inhabiting the region of convergence of three masses of water in the southwestern Atlantic Oceans. These masses of water with different origins are expected to affect the structure of parasite communities by acting as sources of infective stages of helminth species typical of adjacent zoogeographical regions. Multivariate analyses at both infracommunity and component community levels, includi

Measurements of atmospheric mercury species at a coastal site in the Antarctic and over the south Atlantic Ocean during polar summer.

Mercury and many of its compounds behave exceptionally in the environment because of their volatility, capability for methylation, and subsequent biomagnification in contrast with most of the other heavy metals. Long-range atmospheric transport of elemental mercury, its transformation to more toxic methylmercury compounds, the ability of some to undergo photochemical reactions, and their bioaccumulation in the aquatic food chain have made it a subject of global research activities, even in polar regions. The first continuous high-time-resolution measurements of total gaseous mercury in the Ant

Prevalence and mean intensity of Anisakis simplex (sensu stricto) in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from Northeast Atlantic Ocean.

Viscera and muscle of a total of 40 wild 1-2kg European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from Northeast Atlantic (FAO area 27) were examined for Anisakidae larvae detection by digestion method. Extracted parasites were counted and mean intensity was calculated. Parasites were identified by genetic/molecular markers (allozymes and sequences analysis of the mtDNA cox2 gene) as belonging to the species Anisakis simplex (sensu stricto). In viscera, the main localisations of the larvae were under the gastric serosa, where several parasites alive and dead were found, and intestinal serosa. The viscer

Ciguatera-Causing Dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus spp. (Dinophyceae) in a Subtropical Region of North Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands): Morphological Characterization and Biogeography.

Dinoflagellates belonging to the genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs), which are metabolized in fish to more toxic forms and subsequently cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in humans. Five species of Gambierdiscus have been described from the Canary Islands, where CTXs in fish have been reported since 2004. Here we present new data on the distribution of Gambierdiscus species in the Canary archipelago and specifically from two islands, La Palma and La Gomera, where the genus had not been previously reported. Gambierdiscus spp. concentrations were low, with maxima of 88 and 29 cells
