PURPOSE: Comparison of audiometric measurements of commercially available smartphone audiogram application thresholds as compared to gold standard audiometric evaluation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-institution, original contribution. Ninety consecutive adult patients presenting to a tertiary care auditory clinic with auditory complaints were evaluated using standard audiometric testing and an application-based hearing test. OBJECTIVE: The majority of tinnitus patients suffer from hearing loss. But a subgroup of tinnitus patients show normal hearing thresholds in the conventional pure-tone audiometry (125 Hz-8 kHz). OBJECTIVE: To validate self-reported hearing-related symptoms among personnel exposed to moderately high occupational noise levels at an obstetrics clinic.
DESIGN: Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values were calculated for questionnaire items assessing hearing loss, tinnitus, sound sensitivity, poor hearing, difficulty perceiving speech, and sound-induced auditory fatigue. INTRODUCTION: U.S. Army regulations require all soldiers to undergo annual audiometric testing to maintain hearing readiness. The standard method of monitoring hearing in the DoD is via multi-person testing in sound-treated booths using the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System-Hearing Conservation. COVID-19 significantly hindered the standard method, resulting in alarming declines in hearing readiness. In response, the Army Hearing Program initiated a pilot program to use boothless audiometers to supplement standard methods to increase hearing readiness.

BACKGROUND: One of the main treatment goals in cochlear implant (CI) patients is to improve speech perception. One of the target parameters is speech intelligibility in quiet. However, treatment results show a high variability, which has not been sufficiently explained so far. High frequency (10-21 kHz) hearing thresholds were measured in 54 patients with Bell's palsy. In 25 (46%) of the patients the high frequency hearing was worse in the affected side, and in 16 (30%) better. The differences in the mean threshold between the two ears varied from 17.1 to 3.8 dB, being statistically significant at half of the frequencies measured. The findings support the idea that facial palsy is one manifestation of a lesion which extends beyond the VIIth cranial nerve.

In a group of 126 men the authors evaluated the auditory threshold from cortical ERA findings and comparison with their threshold sound audiometry. ADHEAR is a bone conduction hearing aid that uses an adhesive skin adapter. In the current study, the use of ADHEAR as an audiometric bone stimulator was investigated in normal-hearing subjects by comparing it to the standard Radio-Ear B71. Hearing aid selection and adjustment by means of brainstem audiometry was tested in 29 hearing impaired children. A projection procedure is introduced which employs normal and pathological intensity-amplitude functions. This method enables determination of some basic properties of appropriate hearing aids, such as average gain, type of compression, compression factor and onset level. Hearing aid evaluation is discussed for two examples of conductive and sensorineural impairment.

Dizziness and vertigo are common complaints, often linked to inner ear or neurological issues. The role and optimal use of audiometry in monitoring for cisplatin ototoxicity are incompletely defined. Audiograms were obtained from 217 patients before treatment with cisplatin-based chemotherapy for cancers of the esophagus, lung, or head and neck. Posttreatment audiometry then was conducted in 53 of these patients. Chemotherapy consisted of two (87%) or three (13%) courses of cisplatin at a dose of 20 mg/m2/day given as a continuous intravenous infusion over 4 days.
