FaceReview: supporting interactive exploration of linked heterogeneous datasets for unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) suffer from negative public perceptions. A better treatment strategy should be established to help them live an ordinary life with improved perceptions. To do that, it is important to understand the relationship between physical facial features and perceptual judgment. In this paper, we present FaceReview, a new visualization system to support interactive exploration of a heterogeneous multidimensional dataset with facial measurement data and subjective judgment data. To seamlessly link the two data, we design FaceReview based on information

A simple audio-visual prompt device can improve CPR performance.

BACKGROUND: An adjunct to assist cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) might improve the quality of CPR performance. STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to evaluate whether a simple audio-visual prompt device improves CPR performance by emergency medical technicians (EMTs). METHODS: From June 2008 to October 2008, 55 EMTs (39 men, mean age 34.9±4.8 years) participated in this study. A simple audio-visual prompt device was developed. The device generates continuous metronomic sounds for chest compression at a rate of 100 beats/min with a distinct 30(th) sound followed by two respiration

Plastic neural changes and reading improvement caused by audiovisual training in reading-impaired children.

This study aimed at determining whether audiovisual training without linguistic material has a remediating effect on reading skills and central auditory processing in dyslexic children. It was found that this training resulted in plastic changes in the auditory cortex, indexed by enhanced electrophysiological mismatch negativity and faster reaction times to sound changes. Importantly, these changes were accompanied by improvement in reading skills. The results indicate that reading difficulties can be ameliorated by special training programs and, further, that the training effects can be obser

Preliminary evaluation of the educational strategy of a community alcohol use action research project in Scandicci (Italy).

A community project aiming to promote responsible drinking and to prevent alcohol use-related problems in three districts of Scandicci, a town west of Florence, was undertaken between 2000 and 2004. The community totaled 21,851 residents. Among other initiatives, 8,000 carousels that provided information on different levels of alcohol consumption and more than 1,000 prints of nine drawings by local school children that promoted moderate consumption were distributed in the community, respectively, during February-July 2002 and May-June 2003. These formed part of a community educational strategy

Treatment of cigarette dependency. What American pulmonary physicians do.

Physician advice and counseling can significantly help patients stop smoking. Consequently, we surveyed 588 of 2,207 actively practicing American pulmonary clinicians attending the 1983 Annual Meeting of the American Thoracic Society to determine what they did to help their patients stop smoking. Ninety-nine and one tenth percent of those pulmonary internists who had never smoked recorded the smoking habits of their patients and 100% advised smokers to stop. In contrast, pulmonary internists who themselves smoked cigarettes were significantly less inclined to do these two things; 84.6% and 92.

Multivariate fMRI responses in superior temporal cortex predict visual contributions to, and individual differences in, the intelligibility of noisy speech.

Humans have the unique ability to decode the rapid stream of language elements that constitute speech, even when it is contaminated by noise. Two reliable observations about noisy speech perception are that seeing the face of the talker improves intelligibility and the existence of individual differences in the ability to perceive noisy speech. We introduce a multivariate BOLD fMRI measure that explains both observations. In two independent fMRI studies, clear and noisy speech was presented in visual, auditory and audiovisual formats to thirty-seven participants who rated intelligibility. An e

Sound effects: Multimodal input helps infants find displaced objects.

Before 9 months, infants use sound to retrieve a stationary object hidden by darkness but not one hidden by occlusion, suggesting auditory input is more salient in the absence of visual input. This article addresses how audiovisual input affects 10-month-olds' search for displaced objects. In AB tasks, infants who previously retrieved an object at A subsequently fail to find it after it is displaced to B, especially following a delay between hiding and retrieval. Experiment 1 manipulated auditory input by keeping the hidden object audible versus silent, and visual input by presenting the delay

Enhancing Emotional Understanding: Modalities of Emotion Perception in Cochlear-Implanted Children.

OBJECTIVES: The study investigates the emotion perception abilities of Mandarin-speaking preschool children with cochlear implants (CI) compared with their normal-hearing peers. It examines their proficiency across three sensory modalities: auditory-only, visual-only, and audiovisual. The objective is to understand the role of these modalities in aiding emotional recognition for CI users. DESIGN: The research involved 40 preschool children aged 3 to 6 years, divided evenly into normal-hearing and CI groups. Using a controlled experimental setup, the children were evaluated on their ability to

Memory rehabilitation for people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of the Cochrane review 'Memory rehabilitation for people with multiple sclerosis' (first published in the Cochrane Library 14 March 2012, Issue 3). Impairments in cognitive function, particularly memory, are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and can potentially affect their ability to complete functional activities. There is evidence from single-case or small group studies that memory rehabilitation can be beneficial for people with MS, but findings from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have been inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To

The optic pathway: the development of an eLearning animation.

The optic pathway is responsible for sending visual information from the eyes to the brain via electrical impulses. It is essential that a sound understanding of this pathway is established in order to determine an accurate diagnosis concerning visual field defects. Although easy for trained neurologists to understand, it is an area which medical students repeatedly struggle to visualise. It is proposed that audio-visual teaching resources can improve students understanding of complex areas of importance. This article describes the development and evaluation of a short animation created for us

Images of otoscopy: rate and extent of non-compliance with good practice standards.

BACKGROUND: The British Society of Audiology has produced clear guidelines as to how otoscopy should be undertaken; however, no nationally recognised guidelines exist for the wider clinical community. Images of otoscopy appear in many books, journals, magazines and websites. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the rate of non-compliance with good practice in images of otoscopy, the seriousness of the breach, and whether this is more common in sites for professionals or the general public. METHOD: Google Images was searched using the terms 'otoscopy' and 'ear examination'. A total of 200

Response of women with primary orgasmic dysfunction to audiovisual education.

Of 17 women ages 19 to 38 with primary orgasmic dysfunction, 7 achieved orgasm within a week after viewing an audiovisual sex education program, a statistically significant change (p less than .02). No other intervention (educational, behavioral, psychotherapeutic) occurred between the audiovisual session and later inquiry about subsequent sexual response. These results suggest that explicit sex education can help remedy sexual dysfunction in a significant number of women and that further investigation is needed.

Enhanced Consent and Preparedness for Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Prior studies of patient decision aids in urogynecology have not shown benefit, but these tools may have been written at a reading level above that of the average patient. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim was to determine if consent using an audiovisual decision aid (AVDA) written below eighth-grade reading level in English or Spanish affects patient preparedness for surgery. Secondary aims included correlating health literacy with preparedness and assessing patient satisfaction with the decision for surgery. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a randomized controlled trial on patients undergo

The Effects of Preoperative Audiovisual Speech Perception on the Audiologic Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation in Patients with Postlingual Deafness.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with postlingual deafness usually depend on visual information for communication, and their lipreading ability could influence cochlear implantation (CI) outcomes. However, it is unclear whether preoperative visual dependency in postlingual deafness positively or negatively affects auditory rehabilitation after CI. Herein, we investigated the influence of preoperative audiovisual per-ception on CI outcomes. METHOD: In this retrospective case-comparison study, 118 patients with postlingual deafness who underwent unilateral CI were enrolled. Evaluation of speech perceptio

Better read it to me: Benefits of audio versions of variable message signs in drivers with dyslexia.

Adults with dyslexia may find difficulties in reading the messages on variable message signs (VMS) while driving. These signs are an essential part of the traffic communication systems, aimed at informing road users of special circumstances, such as congestion, traffic diversion, or unexpected events. A driving simulation experiment was conducted to test if complementary audio versions of the VMS would be helpful for drivers with dyslexia. Twenty adults with dyslexia and 20 matched controls participated. They were asked to classify the messages displayed on VMS posted along a simulated route,

Using graphic organizers to attain relational knowledge from expository text.

Many students with learning disabilities (LD) experience difficulties with extracting relationships from expository text, especially if they are implicit. Results from studies with K-12 participants have been inconclusive regarding the potency of the graphic organizer (GO) as a comprehension tool. This study attempted to address some of the concerns with GO research by examining the effects of using GOs with middle school students with LD to convey and cue relational knowledge, using a longer intervention and using written essays to assess the students' attainment of relational knowledge.
