BACKGROUND: About 10% of the western population suffers from a specific disability in the acquisition of reading and writing skills, known as developmental dyslexia (DD). Even though DD starts in childhood it frequently continuous throughout lifetime. Impaired processing of acoustic features at the phonematic scale based on dysfunctional auditory temporal resolution is considered as one core deficit underlying DD. Recently, the efficacy of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) to modulate auditory temporal resolution and phoneme processing in healthy individuals has been demonstrated.

Hidden hearing loss (HHL), a recently described auditory disorder, has been proposed to affect auditory neural processing and hearing acuity in subjects with normal audiometric thresholds, particularly in noisy environments. In contrast to central auditory processing disorders, HHL is caused by defects in the cochlea, the peripheral auditory organ. Noise exposure, aging, ototoxic drugs, and peripheral neuropathies are some of the known risk factors for HHL. Our knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of HHL are based primarily on animal models. However, recent clinical studies have also shed li

Aydin and colleagues reported a reversal of physiological 'right-ear advantage' in a group of right-handed patients with schizophrenia, using an auditory acuity test. In schizophrenia, auditory hallucinations may appear to be spatially located inside or outside the patient's head. Here we show, using virtual acoustic space techniques, that normal right-handed subjects have a right-ear advantage for correctly locating the 'source' of hallucination-like voices as from either inside or outside the head. We propose a model for understanding lateralised, external hallucinations in schizophrenia bas

BACKGROUND: With rapid technological advances in anesthesiology, we are acquiring an ever increasing number of auditory alarm systems in the operating room the value of which depend on the hearing acuity of the anesthesiologist monitoring the patient. Presbycusis, the effect of aging on the auditory system, characteristically results in a bilaterally symmetric neurosensory high-frequency hearing loss ( > 2,000 Hz). In this study we attempt to assess the impact of this common hearing disorder on alarm detection.
METHODS: We measured air conduction hearing acuities of 188 anesthesiologists who

This study investigated select aspects of peripheral and central auditory dysfunction, as well as the pathological effects of aging, In an animal model of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Pregnant rats consumed liquid alcohol diets containing 0, 17.5, or 35% ethanol-derived calories, from gestation day 7 to parturition. A fourth group was untreated. Offspring of these mothers were tested for auditory and neurological function, using the auditory brainstem response at 6, 12, and 18 months of age. Some animals in the alcohol-exposed groups showed a peripheral auditory disorder in the form of congen

Age-related deterioration of auditory temporal acuity has been identified as a contributing factor in presbycusis. In the present study, the effects of aging and stimulus level on gap encoding and gap recovery functions were investigated by measuring near-field auditory evoked potentials in the inferior colliculus of eight 3 month old and eight 24 month old CBA/CaJ mice, in response to gap stimuli embedded in broadband noise (40, 60, and 80 dB SPL). Gap encoding was assessed by measuring latencies and amplitudes of peak features of the near-field response, and also with a procedure that calcul

A study was made on human temporal bones to elucidate the effects of aging on the auditory system. Ninety-six ears from 68 individuals, varying in age from infancy to 84 years, served as 'normal ears'. None of these cases had clinical or pathological evidence of specific ear diseases. 'Pathological ears' consisted of 89 ears from 58 individuals which exhibited slowly progressive hearing loss, and which had no specific known cause for the loss. Two aging phenomena were found to affect the human ear. The first is physiological, and has been called 'auditory senility'. It involves all the differe

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Classical irradiation of carcinoma of the nasopharynx involves large fields and high doses; therefore, significant late toxicity and late side effects are to be expected. Given the fact that nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a relatively radiosensitive disease and a significant proportion of patients are long-term survivors, late visual and auditory complications of treatment are of utmost concern for patients and radiation oncologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term visual and auditory toxicity in patients treated with radiotherapy for NPC.

Pineal glial cysts associated with bilateral hearing impairment are very rare. Here, we present the case of a 13-year-old boy with a pineal cyst, which caused severe bilateral hearing impairment persisting from 6 years of age. When the patient was 6 years old, the bilateral hearing acuity was about 40 dB on audiometry. Upon admission to our otolaryngology department, his audiogram revealed a bilateral worsening of the hearing acuity (80 dB). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an abnormal pineal cyst with tectal compression from the left with hardly normal bilateral brainstem auditory ev

Listeners whose first language has fixed stress often struggle to perceive word stress in a second language (L2), a phenomenon known as "stress deafness." This study investigates how L2 proficiency and musical perception skills jointly influence Czech learners' perception of English lexical stress. Fifty-four Czech adults, representing a wide range of English proficiency (measured by LexTALE) and musical perception skills (measured by PROMS-S), completed an AXB discrimination task with English pseudowords differing segmentally and in stress placement. Mixed-effects logistic regression revealed

Some patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) present with various types of hearing deficits. Research on the auditory function and speech sounds in PPA, including temporal, phonemic, and prosodic processing, revealed impairment in some of these auditory processes. Many patients with PPA who present with impaired word recognition subsequently developed non-fluent variant PPA. Herein, we present a patient with semantic variant PPA (svPPA) who demonstrated impaired verbal word discrimination. Audiological examinations revealed normal auditory brainstem responses and slightly impaired pure

BACKGROUND: There are two types of central auditory disorders due to pathology of the bilateral auditory cortices in adult patients: auditory agnosia with residual hearing; cortical deafness with total hearing loss. However, long-term changes of hearing acuity over physical development time are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case report was to illustrate the pathophysiology of auditory changes in a 1 year-3 months old child who was diagnosed with auditory agnosia as a sequel of herpes encephalitis and later developed cortical deafness during a 36-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Occupational studies suggest that exposure to organophosphate insecticides (OPs) can lead to vision or hearing loss. Yet the effects of early-life exposure on visual and auditory function are unknown. Here we examined associations between prenatal OP exposure and grating visual acuity (VA) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) during infancy.
METHODS: 30 OPs were measured in umbilical cord blood using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in a cohort of Chinese infants. Grating visual acuity (VA) (n = 179-200) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) (n = 139-183) were assessed

The association of visual and auditory impairments, simultaneously or consecutively, is a rare condition at the onset of neurological diseases. To determine whether audiovisual impairment can be associated with a specific group of neurological disorders at onset, we performed a prospective study of 307 patients over 6 months in a specialized neurological unit in inflammatory diseases. Six patients (2%) experienced inaugural audiovisual impairments. The mean age of patients at onset was 39.5 ± 14.7 years, with a male:female ratio of 1:2. Both deficiencies were reported in three cases, including

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is characterized by the destruction of functional melanocytes in the skin. This destruction can target melanocytes anywhere in the body, in turn affecting the function of the organs in which the affected melanocytes reside. Melanocytes in the skin, uveal tract and ear are similar in their physiology and morphology, and share a common embryological origin.
AIM: To study the association of vitiligo with ocular and auditory abnormalities.
METHODS: This case-control study was carried out on 40 patients with vitiligo and 20 healthy controls (HCs). All patients and HCs underwe

The question of whether there is a right-hemisphere dominance in the processing of auditory spatial information in human cortex as well as the role of the corpus callosum in spatial hearing functions is still a matter of debate. Here, we approached this issue by investigating two late-callosotomized subjects and one subject with agenesis of the corpus callosum, using a task of sound lateralization with variable interaural time differences. For comparison, three subjects with left or right hemispherectomy were also tested by employing identical methods. Besides a significant reduction in their

Degraded sensory experience during critical periods of development can have adverse effects on brain function. In the auditory system, conductive hearing loss associated with childhood ear infections can produce long-lasting deficits in auditory perceptual acuity, much like amblyopia in the visual system. Here we explore the neural mechanisms that may underlie "amblyaudio" by inducing reversible monaural deprivation (MD) in infant, juvenile, and adult rats. MD distorted tonotopic maps, weakened the deprived ear's representation, strengthened the open ear's representation, and disrupted binaura

PURPOSE: Speech production is a complex motor task involving multiple subsystems. The relationships between these subsystems need to be comprehensively investigated to understand the underlying mechanisms of speech production. The goal of this paper is to examine the differential contributions of 1) auditory and somatosensory feedback control mechanisms, and 2) laryngeal and articulatory speech production subsystems on speech motor control at an individual speaker level using altered auditory and somatosensory feedback paradigms.
METHODS: Twenty young adults completed speaking tasks in which

Understanding environmental sound recognition provides insight into the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying nonverbal auditory semantics. In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics and neural correlates of environmental sound recognition impairments in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Fifty-three patients with PPA (25 non-fluent/agrammatic, nine semantic, five logopenic, and 14 unclassified), age-matched healthy controls, and patients with other dementia syndromes were examined. Audiological measures included pure-tone thresholds, verbal sound recognition (phoneme ide

A 55-year-old right-handed man showed inability to recognize the meaning of non-verbal sounds without impairment of language comprehension after a cerebrovascular accident. His auditory acuity was intact and no other sign of agnosia, apraxia or aphasia was detectable. His errors on a test of sound recognition were acoustic rather than semantic. Brain CT scan showed a small lesion in the posterior part of the right temporal lobe. This case suggests that auditory sound agnosia without language disorder can ensure a lesion confined to the right hemisphere, and that the deficit is discriminative r
