Ear canal volume and variability in the patterns of temporary threshold shifts.

Ear canal resonance is thought to be responsible for the prominent loss of hearing in the 3.0 to 6.0 kHz region caused by over-exposure to noise. Relationships were identified between frequency-of-maximum temporary threshold shift (TTS) and physical measurements of the ear canal in 56 subjects. TTSs were produced by two separate exposures to broadband noise of either 2 hr or 20 minute duration. Ear canal volume was estimated from admittance tympanograms, diameter of the canal opening was measured, and canal length was calculated. Thirty subjects suffered the greatest TTS at 4.0 kHz, while 17 a

The Effect of the Use of Hearing Aids in Elders: Perspectives.

Older adults with hearing loss have difficulties during conversation with others because an elevated auditory threshold reduces speech intelligibility, especially in noisy environments. Listening and comprehension often become exhausting tasks for hearing-impaired elders, resulting in social isolation and depression. The aim of the present study was to investigate the advantages of hearing aid use in relation to relief from listening-related fatigue, which is still controversial. Participants included a sample of 49 hearing-impaired elders affected by presbycusis for whom hearing aids were pre

Intense sounds may alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition.

Morphological and structural changes have been observed in various cochlear elements following exposure to intense sounds. Whether these changes are sufficient to locally alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition is unknown. Here a psychophysical test for mechanical changes in the partition is developed and applied. Monaural exposures to an intense 1700-Hz tone were preceded and followed by a binaural task in which the subject adjusted the interaural time difference of a 250-Hz tone in order to perceive it as centered inside his head. If the local gradients of mass, stiffness,

Effects of Auditory Anticipatory Cues and Lead Time on Visually Induced Motion Sickness.

ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the ability of auditory cues for predicting motion and lead times to mitigate visually induced motion sickness (VIMS).BackgroundThe vehicle information systems predominantly utilize visual displays, which can introduce conflicts between visual and vestibular motion cues, potentially resulting in VIMS. In these scenarios, auditory cues may provide a viable solution, especially when visual cues are diminished by fatigue or distractions.MethodsIn two distinct studies, a total of 180 participants were involved in investigating the impact of auditory cues on

Is Cepstral Peak Prominence a Measure of Vocal Fatigue in Temple Priests: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Considering cepstral analysis of voice as a measure of overall severity of dysphonia, we tried to investigate if these measures could be considered as a metric of vocal fatigue as well. Since voice quality changes are seen as a result of vocal fatigue, we wanted to find out if there were any correlations between the cepstral measures, vocal fatigue symptoms, and auditory perceptual evaluation of voice in professional voice users. METHOD: The pilot study was conducted on 10 temple priests belonging to the Krishna Consciousness Movement. We conducted a pre-post voice evaluation, which

Low-dose caffeine enhances cognitive processing but not physical performance in fatigued taekwondo athletes: a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is commonly used to combat fatigue and enhance both cognitive and physical performance. However, its effects on neurophysiological responses and sport-specific performance following fatigue induction remain unclear, particularly in combat sports such as Taekwondo. This study investigated the effects of a 200 mg caffeine dose on physiological markers, electroencephalographic (EEG) brainwave activity, auditory P300 event-related potentials (ERPs), and Taekwondo-specific performance following combined mental and physical fatigue. METHODS: Thirteen male Taekwondo athletes par

Reduced active protection to the cochlea during physical exercise.

The present investigation was designed to evaluate whether dynamic physical exercise is able to modify stapedius reflex (SR) activity and, as a consequence, to influence the amount of temporary threshold shift (TTS). Experimental subjects were 10 normal-hearing male volunteers, aged 27-34 years (mean 30.8). SR parameters in the time-domain were assessed before, during and after submaximal exercise test, performed for 10 min on an ergometer cycle at 50% of maximum work capacity. The same parameters were also investigated in the absence of exercise, at time-matched intervals. In addition, the co

Hearing loss in the chinchilla from impact and continuous noise exposure.

The relative hazard posed to the peripheral auditory system by impact/impulse and continuous noise of the same power spectrum was determined. Impact noise was generated by striking a nail with a hammer and was digitally recorded. The acoustical power spectrum of the impact was determined and pink noise was filtered to produce a continuous noise stimulus with the same acoustic power spectrum. Pre-exposure auditory evoked response (AER) thresholds were obtained at 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz on 16 adult chinchillas. The pool of animals was divided into two equal groups based upon pre-exposure AER thresho

The influence of military low-altitude flight noise on the inner ear of the guinea pig. Part I: Hearing threshold measurements.

The auditory thresholds of about 60 anaesthetized guinea pigs were determined at 3 or 4 frequencies between 2 and 20 kHz using the acoustically evoked brain stem potentials. The animals were then exposed to electro-acoustically reproduced MLAF noise with peak levels between 120 and 130 dB(A). The exposure occurred either once or else four times within either 3 or 60 minutes. The level of noise increased at 7.5 and 75 dB/s (slow and fast increase). TTS was then determined. PTS was measured one week later. In over half the animals, exposure to rapidly increasing noise level with a peak of 126 dB

Effects of periodic rest on physiological measures of auditory sensitivity following exposure to noise.

Whole nerve action potential (AP) and single auditory-nerve fiber thresholds were measured in chinchillas exposed to noise. The exposure stimulus was a 500-Hz octave band of noise presented at 95 dB SPL for 15 min/h, for 4 or 40 days. The AP thresholds were elevated by about 40 dB on day 4, between 0.5 kHz and approximately 8 kHz. On day 40, AP thresholds at the same frequencies were lower by 10-25 dB, even though the noise exposure had continued. Single fiber threshold tuning curves exhibited pathologies similar to those previously observed following noise exposure. Tuning curves measured on

Impaired auditory discrimination and auditory-motor integration in hyperfunctional voice disorders.

Hyperfunctional voice disorders (HVDs) are the most common class of voice disorders, consisting of diagnoses such as vocal fold nodules and muscle tension dysphonia. These speech production disorders result in effort, fatigue, pain, and even complete loss of voice. The mechanisms underlying HVDs are largely unknown. Here, the auditory-motor control of voice fundamental frequency (fo) was examined in 62 speakers with and 62 speakers without HVDs. Due to the high prevalence of HVDs in singers, and the known impacts of singing experience on auditory-motor function, groups were matched for singing
