PURPOSE: The maturation of auditory pathways in newborns, particularly in pre-terms, is a crucial process influencing the accuracy and timeliness of early audiological diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of postnatal auditory pathway maturation on hearing loss diagnosis by comparing early and later ABR assessments in pre-term and full-term newborns.
METHODS: Seventy-eight newborns (156 ears) were enrolled and divided by gestational age. All underwent initial screening, clinical Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), tympanometry, and evaluation of diagnostic timing. Sta

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the main cause of non-hereditary sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). In order to shed light on SNHL pathophysiology, we examined the auditory pathway in CMV-infected fetuses; the temporal lobe, in particular the auditory cortex, and the inner ear. We investigated both inner ears and temporal lobes of 20 human CMV-infected fetuses at 21 weeks of gestation. As a negative group, five fetuses from spontaneous miscarriages without CMV infection were studied. Inner ears and temporal lobes were histologically examined, immunohistochemistry for CMV and CMV-

CONCLUSIONS: In a patient with bilateral auditory neuropathy (AN), the vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) was probably absent because of a neuropathy involving the inferior vestibular nerve and/or its end organ, the saccule. Our result can therefore be interpreted as a concomitant unilateral sacculo-collic neuropathy. We suggest the use of more precise terms to characterize AN patients with involvement of different parts of the inner ear and its innervations. We encourage detailed vestibular assessment in patients with AN in order to assess the co-existence of any symptomatic or asymp

We studied seven patients before and after vestibular schwannoma surgery. Four patients became unilaterally profoundly deaf and three patients preserved their hearing. Cortical responses were recorded with a 122-channel whole-scalp SQUID neuromagnetometer using tone-burst stimuli to the healthy ear. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were measured using alternating clicks. Ten healthy volunteers served as a control group. In patients, preoperative cortical response latencies and strengths did not differ significantly from those of controls. However, 6 months after the operation the l

In this, the last of a three-part series on neuroanatomy/physiology related to central auditory assessment, two topics will be presented: the corpus callosum and the efferent auditory system. A general anatomical description of the corpus callosum is followed by information on the topographical representation of the cortex within the corpus callosum. Auditory areas of the corpus callosum and the transcallosal auditory pathway are emphasized. Data on transfer time across the corpus callosum and the possible role of inhibitory and excitatory fibers of this commissure are presented. Neuropsycholo

PURPOSE: Objective information about the central auditory pathways in vestibular schwannoma can guide strategies for hearing rehabilitation and prognostication. This study aims to generate this information using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
METHODS: This is a prospective observational single center study including 35 patients with vestibular schwannoma and 40 controls. Subjects underwent 64 direction multi-shell DTI which was processed to yield scalar parameters [Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC)] and probabilistic fiber tracking parameters.

We have used animal models of long term neonatal cochlear hearing loss to study developmental plasticity of the central auditory pathways. Newborn chinchilla pups and feline kittens were treated with the ototoxic drug amikacin, so as to induce basal lesions in the cochlea. At maturity these animals were used in single unit electrophysiological mapping studies, in which the cochleotopic organization of primary auditory cortex (of the cat) and the inferior colliculus of the midbrain (in the chinchilla) were mapped. We have observed, both in the midbrain and auditory cortex, massive reorganizatio

The accurate representation of sound in the central auditory pathway of mammals depends on the cochlea, the peripheral sensory organ, which is optimised to detect acoustic signals with unparalleled temporal precision. Beyond its role in converting acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, the cochlea also plays a key role in shaping the maturation of the auditory pathway during pre-hearing stages. This process is essential for creating the tonotopic maps used to identify a broad range of sound frequencies. To achieve this extraordinary task, the sensory hair cells and supporting cells of the p

Unlike megabats, which rely on well-developed vision, microbats use ultrasonic echolocation to navigate and locate prey. To study ultrasound perception, here we compared the auditory cortices of microbats and megabats by constructing reference genomes and single-nucleus atlases for four species. We found that parvalbumin (PV)+ neurons exhibited evident cross-species differences and could respond to ultrasound signals, whereas their silencing severely affected ultrasound perception in the mouse auditory cortex. Moreover, megabat PV+ neurons expressed low levels of complexins (CPLX1-CPLX4), whic

Introduction Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion in chromosome 7, affecting ∼ 28 genes. Studies have demonstrated conductive losses seemingly related to the absence of the elastin gene and mild to profound sensorineural losses due to cochlear fragility. Objective To characterize and compare the peripheral auditory system and auditory brainstem response (ABR) of adults with WS and neurotypical adults matched by age and gender. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional observational study with 30 individuals of both sexes, aged 18 to 37 years - 15 of them with

GABAB receptors are G-protein coupled receptors for the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. Functional GABAB receptors are formed as heteromers of GABAB1 and GABAB2 subunits, which further associate with various regulatory and signaling proteins to provide receptor complexes with distinct pharmacological and physiological properties. GABAB receptors are widely distributed in nervous tissue, where they are involved in a number of processes and in turn are subject to a number of regulatory mechanisms. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of the cellular distribution and function of the r

Experience of the world is inherently multisensory. It has been suggested that audiovisual modulation occurs as early as subcortical auditory stages. However, this was based on the frequency-following response, a measure recently found to be significantly generated from cortical sources. It therefore remains unclear whether subcortical auditory processing can indeed be modulated by visual information. We aimed to trace visual modulation along the auditory pathway by comparing auditory brainstem response (ABR) and middle-latency response (MLR) between unimodal auditory and multimodal audiovisua

Optogenetic tools, providing non-invasive control over selected cells, have the potential to revolutionize sensory prostheses for humans. Optogenetic stimulation of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in the ear provides a future alternative to electrical stimulation used in cochlear implants. However, most channelrhodopsins do not support the high temporal fidelity pertinent to auditory coding because they require milliseconds to close after light-off. Here, we biophysically characterized the fast channelrhodopsin Chronos and revealed a deactivation time constant of less than a millisecond at body

Analogous to the visual system, auditory information has been proposed to be processed in two largely segregated streams: an anteroventral ("what") pathway mainly subserving sound identification and a posterodorsal ("where") stream mainly subserving sound localization. Despite the popularity of this assumption, the degree of separation of spatial and non-spatial auditory information processing in cortex is still under discussion. In the present study, a statistical approach was implemented to investigate potential behavioral dissociations for spatial and non-spatial auditory processing in stro

PURPOSE: The transduction mechanism of the inner ear and the transmission of nerve impulses along the auditory way are highly dependent upon the cochlear oxygen supply. Several studies have considered the possibility that obstructive sleep apnea-hypopneas during sleep can interfere with these processes, and the results are not uniform. The aim of the study is to evaluate the auditory function in adult patients affected by severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
METHODS: Thirty-nine patients in this study were included and divided in OSAS group, with severe OSAS (Apnea-Hypopnea Index,
