Multiple auditory steady state response thresholds to bone conduction stimuli in adults with normal and elevated thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory steady state responses (ASSRs) to multiple air conduction (AC) stimuli modulated at ∼80 Hz have been shown to provide reasonable estimates of the behavioral audiogram. To distinguish the type of hearing loss (i.e., conductive, sensorineural, or mixed), bone conduction (BC) results are necessary. There are few BC-ASSR data, especially for individuals with hearing loss. The present studies aimed to (1) determine multiple ASSR thresholds to BC stimuli in adults with normal hearing, masker-simulated hearing loss, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and (2) determine how well

[The relation between the auditory threshold and the threshold of middle ear reflexes induced by ipsilateral stimulation in occupational deafness].

The author examined and evaluated middle ear reflexes obtained by ipsilateral stimulation in a group of 115 men, mean age 52.5 years (s = 9 years) who worked exposed to noise in uranium mines on average for 16.5 years (s = 4.6 years). Their total percentage auditory loss calculated according to Fowler is 49.7% (s = 15.1%). The arithmetic mean of differences of the auditory threshold and the threshold of middle ear reflexes in 214 ears examined at a frequency of 1000 Hz is 45.5 dB (s = 16.3 dB, min. 0 dB, max. 80 dB), in 208 ears at a frequency of 2000 Hz 30.4 dB (s = 13.5 dB, min. 0 dB, max. 7

Effects of noise and salicylate on auditory evoked-response thresholds in the chinchilla.

The combined effects of noise and sodium salicylate on auditory sensitivity were examined in the chinchilla. Sensitivity was monitored by recording the evoked response recorded with an electrode implanted in the inferior colliculus. Sodium salicylate (300 mg/kg/day), an octave band of noise centered at 500 Hz (80 or 105 dB SPL), or both of these agents were delivered for 15 days. Threshold testing was performed at 7 frequencies before, during, and after exposure to the ototraumatic agent(s). The salicylate alone caused an average temporary threshold shift of less than 10 dB and essentially no

Development of absolute auditory thresholds in the house mouse (Mus musculus).

The development of hearing in the house mouse (Mus musculus) was behaviorally tested from the first postnatally measurable thresholds to those of young adults. An unconditioned stop reaction on tones was used in 9- to 11-day-old mice, then an unconditioned pinna reflex that can be elicited at low intensities and is not equal to the Preyer reflex. In addition, thresholds from 17- to 19-day-old and adult mice were obtained by a conditioned eyelid reflex. Frequencies between 1 and 80 kHz were tested. First reactions on tones were found at day 10 after birth in the frequency range of greatest sens

Spike threshold adaptation diversifies neuronal operating modes in the auditory brain stem.

Single neurons function along a spectrum of neuronal operating modes whose properties determine how the output firing activity is generated from synaptic input. The auditory brain stem contains a diversity of neurons, from pure coincidence detectors to pure integrators and those with intermediate properties. We investigated how intrinsic spike initiation mechanisms regulate neuronal operating mode in the avian cochlear nucleus. Although the neurons in one division of the avian cochlear nucleus, nucleus magnocellularis, have been studied in depth, the spike threshold dynamics of the tonically f

Delayed-onset temporary auditory threshold shift following head blow in guinea pigs.

This study attempts to investigate the development of sensorineural hearing loss following a head blow without skull fracture in association with physiological and histopathologic changes in an experimental animal model. With the head in a freely movable position, albino guinea pigs were given a single blow to the occipital region by a head blow device. At 1, 7, and 14 days after the blow, the animals' auditory brainstem response (ABR) and cochlear microphonics (CM) were examined, and both the temporal bone and brain stem were observed by light and electron microscopy. The ABR threshold was un

Carbon monoxide exposure potentiates high-frequency auditory threshold shifts induced by noise.

Hypoxia has long been hypothesized to play a role in noise-induced hearing loss, and the disruption of auditory function by asphyxiation has been repeatedly demonstrated. Recent data, however, suggest that the cochlea is resistant to less extreme hypoxic events. The current report describes the combined effects of noise and hypoxia on a measure of auditory function, in an effort to clarify the role of hypoxia in hearing loss. Exposure to 1200 parts per million of carbon monoxide in air for 90 min preceding and 120 min concurrent with exposure to a broad-band noise at 110 dBA produced high-freq

Auditory brainstem responses predict auditory nerve fiber thresholds and frequency selectivity in hearing impaired chinchillas.

Noninvasive auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) are commonly used to assess cochlear pathology in both clinical and research environments. In the current study, we evaluated the relationship between ABR characteristics and more direct measures of cochlear function. We recorded ABRs and auditory nerve (AN) single-unit responses in seven chinchillas with noise-induced hearing loss. ABRs were recorded for 1-8 kHz tone burst stimuli both before and several weeks after 4 h of exposure to a 115 dB SPL, 50 Hz band of noise with a center frequency of 2 kHz. Shifts in ABR characteristics (threshold, wa

[Otoacoustic emissions, auditory evoked potentials, pure tone thresholds and speech intelligibility in cases of auditory neuropathy].

The combined findings of "normal evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) and absent or markedly disturbed auditory evoked potentials from the brainstem and/or cortex" has been named auditory neuropathy in the English literature. The pure tone thresholds in these patients range from mild to severe loss. The loss of speech comprehension is out of proportion in comparison to the pure tone threshold elevation. This combination of findings suggests that cochlear function and in particular outer hair cell function, is normal in these patients but also suggests that the inner hair cell / VIII nerve funct

Rapid hearing threshold assessment with modified auditory brainstem response protocols in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is the gold standard for hearing testing in dogs. ABR is commonly used in puppies to diagnose congenital sensorineural deafness. Long test times limit the use for a more comprehensive hearing screening in veterinary practice. This study aimed to establish a super-fast hearing screening protocol in dogs. METHODS: Hearing thresholds were routinely measured with a mobile device designed for newborn hearing screening in 90 dogs. We introduced modifications of the ABR protocol, e. g., a binaural test mode, higher stimulus rates, a broadband chirp sti

[Objective auditory brainstem response threshold deficits in patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors].

The established criteria of auditory brainstem responses (ABR) such as JV latency, JI-V interpeak latency and interaural differences of latency or amplitude have been found to be sensitive for detecting tumors of the cerebellopontine angle if a response is present. However, the ABR can be absent in cases of acoustic neuromas because of desynchronization, even though pure-one audiometry indicates that responses should be present. This retrospective study compared the ABR and pure-tone thresholds in 234 cases with cerebellopontine angle tumors and a control group of 181 cases with sensory hearin

Improvement in sensorineural auditory threshold of the guinea-pig fetus following delivery.

The human fetus in utero is hypoxic relative to the neonate due to differences between placental and pulmonary oxygenation. Comparable degrees of hypoxia induced in young and adult animals caused an elevation in hearing threshold of a sensorineural nature. It was hypothesised therefore that the human fetus may also have such an elevation of threshold. This was tested in this study by recording ABR thresholds to bone conducted stimuli in fetal guinea-pigs that were near full term and again in the same animals, after delivery and consequent pulmonary oxygenation. In every animal studied (n = 9),

Bone-conduction masking for threshold assessment in auditory brain stem response testing.

The viability of applying Sensorineural Acuity Level (SAL) audiometry to auditory brain stem response (ABR) testing was investigated using 38 subjects with normal hearing, conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing losses. The stimuli were clicks, 4000, 2000, and 1000 Hz tone-pips. After ABR thresholds (ABRt) were obtained, bone-conducted noise was used to mask the response to a stimulus 5 dB above ABR threshold (ABRt + 5). Estimates of behavioral bone-conduction thresholds were made by observing the amount of noise needed to mask ABRt + 5. Estimates of behavioral air-conduction thresholds w

The in-air auditory thresholds of the eurasian otter (Lutra lutra, L. 1758) as determined by auditory brainstem responses.

As of yet there is no literature record of the hearing range of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra, L. 1758), a key species for natural conservation efforts in Europe. We recorded in-air pure tone hearing thresholds of anaesthetized otters using auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and report the results of the Eurasian otter. The recorded potentials showed the typical mammalian auditory brainstem response consisting of 5 distinct positive peaks during the first 10 ms after stimulus onset. At 80 dB SPL the hearing ranged from around 200 Hz to 32 kHz, with lowest thresholds around 4 kHz.

Effect of subject state on auditory brainstem response threshold using Kalman-weighted averaging.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the impact of a subject's testing state on auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds using a novel ABR system (Vivosonic Integrity™), which incorporates Kalman-weighted averaging and bluetooth electrical isolation to address the limitation of conventional ABR limitation to obtain a stable result under non-sedated conditions, especially for infants and children. METHOD: Twenty-four adults (18-34 years old, 48 ears) with normal hearing were enrolled for ABR testing under three different states (lying quietly in the supine position or sleeping-lying; wat

Afferent synaptic changes in auditory hair cells during noise-induced temporary threshold shift.

This study presents evidence in support of the hypothesis that one of the sites of failure during noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) is the afferent synapse between auditory hair cells and auditory nerve fibers. Our results show clear evidence indicating changes in the quantity of afferent synapses and the morphology of presynaptic structures in the alligator lizard auditory hair cells during TTS. In TTS hair cells there are statistically significant decreases in: 1) the number of afferent synapses, 2) the number of synaptic vesicles at the afferent synapses, 3) the size of synaptic
