Investigating behaviour from early- to mid-childhood and its association with academic outcomes in a cohort of children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia.

High rates of academic underachievement at 9-10 years have been identified in children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia. This study investigated the stability of behaviour from early to mid-childhood and how this relates to academic outcomes in children born with at least one risk factor of neonatal hypoglycaemia in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Behaviour data was collected using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Child Behaviour Checklist 1.5-5, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 466 children (52 % male; 27 % Māori, 60 % New Zealand European, 2 % Pacific, 11

Mental health self-care during the COVID-19 pandemic: a prospective cohort study in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Pandemic public health measures have affected mental health for many people. We sought to determine how people were managing their mental health concerns during the pandemic, and to identify worker characteristics where actions were more common. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 1646 Australians, who were in paid employment prior to the pandemic, completed a survey during 27 April- 26 July 2020 on changes in work, health, and actions taken to manage their mental health concerns. Descriptive statistics were calculated to determine actions taken to manage mental health concerns dur

Australasian guideline for the performance of sweat chloride testing 3rd edition: to support cystic fibrosis screening, diagnosis and monitoring.

The sweat test is used as a biological marker of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) dysfunction, but there is growing recognition that sweat chloride concentrations of people with cystic fibrosis (CF) can overlap with those without CF. There are also people without CF whose symptoms are caused by abnormalities of CFTR. To support clinical decisions, the sweat chloride test conducted appropriately should provide consistent results between laboratories and common decision limits should be used. International consensus guidelines now recommend a standard set of clinical de

Inequalities in dental caries among Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in Australia: A literature review.

Dental caries constitutes one of the most ubiquitous diseases in Australia, with Indigenous children presenting a notably higher prevalence than their non-Indigenous peers. This literature review aims to update the knowledge base developed by Christian and Blinkhorn in 2012, with a particular focus on the contemporary disparities in dental caries between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. Our research strategy involved a thorough exploration of the Medline, PubMed, and Scopus databases to identify pertinent studies published between 2009 and 2022. Supplementary resources included various

Factors associated with melatonin use in child sleep disturbance: A survey of Australian parents.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are prevalent in Australian children and cause a significant amount of stress to both children and their parents. If sleep disturbances are left untreated, they can result in detrimental consequences to both child and parental wellbeing. While behavioural interventions are recognised as the gold standard treatment for paediatric insomnia, there is a growing use of melatonin from both prescription and non-prescription sources in paediatrics. However, empirical research on the efficacy and safety of melatonin for children is sparse, conflicting, and inconsistent. Th

Plant-Based Dietary Patterns and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Australians: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

Plant-based diets (PBDs) emphasise higher intakes of plant foods and lower intakes of animal foods, and they have been associated with reduced cardiovascular morbidity/mortality and lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Evidence is limited regarding the dietary profile, diet quality, and nutritional adequacy of PBDs, including their impact on CVD risk compared with traditional meat-eating diets in Australians. The PBD Study (PBDS) is a cross-sectional study that will recruit 240 adults from the Hunter region (NSW) without known CVD who are habitually consuming vegan (no animal flesh

Perceptions of Illicit Tobacco Sources Following a Proposed Reduction in Tobacco Availability: A Qualitative Analysis of New Zealanders Who Smoke.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco companies claim that substantially reducing tobacco retail outlets in Aotearoa New Zealand will increase illicit tobacco trade and crime. However, we know little about whether people who smoke anticipate using illicit tobacco once this measure is implemented. Exploring current illicit tobacco use and expected market development would clarify the likely scale of this potential problem. AIMS AND METHODS: We undertook online in-depth interviews with 24 adults who smoke and explored their experiences of illicit tobacco, perceptions of illicit market growth once legal tobacco

Risk factors and clinical characteristics of breathlessness in Australian adults: Data from the BOLD Australia study.

BACKGROUND: Breathlessness is a common symptom related to a significant health burden. However, the association of breathlessness with clinical characteristics, especially objective pulmonary test results is scarce. We aimed to identify the characteristics independently associated with breathlessness in Australian adults. METHOD: The analysis used data from BOLD Australia, a cross-sectional study that included randomly selected adults aged ≥40 years from six sites in Australia. Clinical characteristics and spirometry results were compared for breathlessness (modified Medical Research Council

Prediction of mesio-distal dimensions of the unerupted permanent canines and premolars using measurements of different groups of erupted teeth: retrospective cross-sectional analysis of digital records in Western Australians.

PURPOSE: Recently, other combinations of teeth are claimed to be better predictors for size estimation of permanent canine and premolars. The present study aimed to determine which combinations of teeth presented an appropriate predictor in Western Australians using digital technology. METHODS: A total of 500 (323 females, 177 males) participants meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly selected from private orthodontic clinics. Mesiodistal dimensions of selected teeth obtained from pre-orthodontic treatment digital records were analyzed using SPSS 20. Fifteen possible combinations of tee

Forensic mental health issues for women in contact with the criminal justice system.

OBJECTIVE: This review demonstrates that women who encounter the Australian criminal justice system include some of the most disadvantaged and mentally unwell people in society, particularly Aboriginal women. Women in custody are a heterogeneous group and have different psychosocial needs when compared to male prisoners. CONCLUSION: The approaches to female offending must address their significant psychosocial and mental health issues at every point of contact with the criminal justice system, be culturally informed and specifically address Indigenous overrepresentation.

The effect of a financial incentive on COVID-19 vaccination uptake, and predictors of uptake, in people experiencing homelessness: A randomized controlled trial.

People who are homeless are at increased risk of COVID-19 infection, and of poorer associated outcomes. Delivering vaccinations to, and ensuring uptake of multiple doses in, people who are homeless is complex. Financial incentives may improve vaccination uptake, particularly in people who have not received routine vaccinations previously, though evidence about the effect of incentives is limited and variable. This randomized controlled trial (ANZCTR 383156) assessed the effect of a financial incentive (an A$10 grocery voucher) on uptake of the second COVID-19 vaccination in Australian adults w

Causes of death among Australians with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, 2002-2019.

AIMS: This population-based study sought to explore in detail the conditions driving the diversification in causes of death among people with diabetes. METHODS: We linked Australians with type 1 or type 2 diabetes of all ages on the National Diabetes Services Scheme to the National Death Index for 2002-2019. We investigated the proportional contributions of different causes of death to total deaths over time across eight categories of causes of death, stratified by sex and diabetes type. The underlying causes of death were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases,

Manifold child, family and social variables are associated with injury among New Zealand preschool children.

AIM: Approaches to understanding child injury tend to focus on short-term proximal influences. Previous analyses have found higher rates of injury among Māori and Pacific children in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). This study aimed to investigate how combinations of situations and multiple events act across the life-course to either protect preschool children from, or place them at risk of, repeated injuries requiring medical attention. METHODS: Longitudinal data were used to identify parent-reported injuries requiring medical attention among 6114 preschool NZ children. The environments experience

Proposal and exploration of a novel score to quantify patient-perceived burden of inflammatory bowel disease under routine care.

BACKGROUND: The burden of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often reported on from a system or cost viewpoint. We created and explored a novel patient-perceived burden of disease (PPBoD) score in a large Australasian cohort. AIM: To create and explore a novel patient-perceived burden of disease (PPBoD) score in a large Australasian cohort, and correlate PPBoD scores with demographics, disease and treatment factors. METHODS: The Crohn Colitis Care Registry was interrogated in October 2023. Data from adults with IBD with an outpatient care encounter in the last 14 months among 17 centres wer

Incidence of postoperative delirium in surgical patients: An observational retrospective cohort study.

SummaryPerioperative neurocognitive disorders including postoperative delirium (POD) are common complications of anaesthesia and surgery, associated with morbidity, mortality and a large economic cost. Currently, limited data are available on the incidence of POD in the New Zealand population. The objective of this study was to utilise New Zealand national level datasets to identify the incidence of POD. Our primary outcome was defined as a diagnosis of delirium via ICD 9/10 coding within seven days of surgery. We also analysed demographic, anaesthetic and surgical characteristics. All adult p

Mismatched expectations regarding donor anonymity: the implications of Australians crossing-borders for egg donation in South Africa.

Some Australian women who require donor oocytes to achieve parenthood travel to South Africa, where egg donors are more readily available and egg donation comparatively affordable. In South Africa, egg donation arranged through donor agencies or egg banks is anonymous, whereas Australian las does not permit donor anonymity. This study explored Australian recipients' views on the implications of donor anonymity for their children, including the potential for future donor identification through direct-to-consumer genetic testing and social media. It also examined whether South African infertilit

Dimensions of Child Maltreatment in Australians With a History of Out-of-Home Care.

Research suggests that the dimensions of childhood maltreatment (type, age of onset, duration, frequency and perpetrator) play an important role in determining health and wellbeing outcomes, though little information is available on these dimensions for any care experienced cohorts. This study aimed to determine if any variation in maltreatment dimensions were experienced between two subsets of the nationally representative Australian Child Maltreatment Study, both of which reported childhood maltreatment histories: care-experienced (n = 358) and non-care-experienced (n = 4922). Using a series

An Australian aged care home for people subject to homelessness: health, wellbeing and cost-benefit.

BACKGROUND: Older people subject to homelessness face many challenges including poor health status, geriatric syndromes, and depression, coupled with barriers in accessing health and aged care services. Many are in need of formal aged care at a younger age than the general population, yet, in Australia, specialised aged-care services to support this vulnerable cohort are limited. METHODS: This study was an evaluation of a new purpose-built aged care home for people with high care needs and who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Over the first 12 months post-admission, the study examined
