Dental development and age at death of the holotype of Anapithecus hernyaki (RUD 9) using synchrotron virtual histology.

The chronology of dental development and life history of primitive catarrhines provides a crucial comparative framework for understanding the evolution of hominoids and Old World monkeys. Among the extinct groups of catarrhines are the pliopithecoids, with no known descendants. Anapithecus hernyaki is a medium-size stem catarrhine known from Austria, Hungary and Germany around 10 Ma, and represents a terminal lineage of a clade predating the divergence of hominoids and cercopithecoids, probably more than 30 Ma. In a previous study, Anapithecus was characterized as having fast dental developmen

Impact and management of Campylobacter in human medicine--European perspective.

In 2001 in Germany, Campylobacter was second to Salmonella as the most frequent foodborne pathogen isolated from humans. This is also true for the major part of the European population with incidence data available, namely Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Austria and Spain, with a total population of 154.5 million, and incidence rates for Salmonella and Campylobacter of 81.8/100 000 and 49.0/100 000 respectively. Countries where Campylobacter is predominant are the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and The Netherlands, with a total population of 94.2 million, and incidence rates for

Histopathological findings in spontaneous tendon ruptures.

A spontaneous rupture of a tendon may be defined as a rupture that occurs during movement and activity, that should not and usually does not damage the involved musculotendinous units (1). Spontaneous tendon ruptures were uncommon before the 1950s. Böhler found only 25 Achilles tendon ruptures in Wien between 1925 and 1948 (2). Mösender & Klatnek treated 20 Achilles tendon ruptures between 1953 and 1956, but 105 ruptures between 1964 and 1967 (3). Lawrence et al. found only 31 Achilles tendon ruptures in Boston during a period of 55 years (1900-1954) (4). During the recent decades tendon ruptu

Redescription of Cercopithifilaria rugosicauda (Böhm & Supperer, 1953) (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) of roe deer, with an emended diagnosis of the genus Cercopithifilaria and a genetic characterisation.

Newly collected material of Cercopithifilaria rugosicauda from roe deer Capreolus capreolus was analysed and compared to descriptions of C. rugosicauda from Austria and Hungary. The present specimens were assigned to the genus Cercopithifilaria using both morphological and molecular analyses. Complementary morphological data on the males and microfilariae of C. rugosicauda were described. The main morphological characters of different species of Cercopithifilaria were outlined and an emended generic diagnosis proposed. A genetic characterisation based on the analyses of cox1 and 12S rDNA seque

The knowns and unknowns of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in selected countries of Central Europe.

BACKGROUND: Sand flies are vectors of the protozoan Leishmania spp. and phleboviruses. In Europe, several species are widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and a northward spread can be observed. They can be found regularly also in some regions of Central Europe, with Phlebotomus mascittii being the most cold-tolerant and northerly distributed species, but the knowledge on their distribution in countries such as Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary remains fragmentary because of a lack of comprehensive field studies and a poor understanding of the ecological requirements a

[The first record of the delivery of conjoined twins in the Srem county in the 19th century].

In this paper is presented the first original document of the delivery of conjoined twins on the territory of the present-day Vojvodina. The document number 1224 consists of two handwritten quires. On the first page of the first quire are a description and a drawing of the delivered twins. The delivery was described and drawn by Dr. Ernest Furjaković, a shire physician in Ruma and the secondary physicus of the Srem County, who attended and handled the delivery. The conjoined twins were delivered in the night between 2 and 3 April 1852 in Mali Radinci, a small village in the Srem County nearby

Modelling the risk of West Nile virus infection in seven European countries from published serological and case notification data, 2008 to 2022.

BACKGROUNDWest Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic mosquito-borne pathogen increasingly reported in Europe.AIMWe aimed to characterise heterogeneities in the average annual human risk of WNV infection (force of infection, FOI) and in WNV surveillance across Europe.METHODSWe conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines to identify serological studies on WNV in humans with IgG-based assays in Europe. We then used mathematical models fitted to both age-stratified serosurvey and case data to reconstruct spatially explicit FOI estimates, the sensitivity of syndromic surveillance and age

Infection caused by a parasite most closely related to Hepatozoon luiperdjie in cats from Hungary.

Feline hepatozoonosis, due to Hepatozoon felis, has been recently reported in wild cats from Central Europe. At the same time, only two isolated cases were reported in domestic cats, one in Austria, and another in Hungary. In the southern part of Central Europe, Hungary, three cats were presented at two small animal clinics in the course of 1.5 months, their most important clinical findings included anaemia (for all three cats), malignant neoplasia (case #1), chyloabdomen, splenomegaly and hepatic nodules (case #2), and dyspnoea (case #3). Hepatozoon gamonts measuring 12.3 × 6 μm were present

Whereas Prof. v.Frisch of the other surgical clinic who also had visited Pasteur carried out animal experiments which urged him to disapprove Pasteur's human rabies vaccination. Ullmann vaccinated with great success but soon there appeared obstructions in Viennese medical journals and hateful discussions in the Austrian Parliament against Pasteur and Ullmann. These facts blocked the nece

Disparity Between Punitive Attitudes Toward Stranger Rape and Partner Rape: Evidence From Cross-National Survey Data.

While legally the same, acts of sexual abuse within and outside intimate relationships are not seen as equal by the public, and this distinction might also be reflected in preferred criminal punishment; some people might deem partner rape as deserving less harsh punishment than the rape of a stranger. Our secondary analysis examines differential punitiveness toward these two types of rape among the respondents (n = 11,383) to a large population survey conducted in 2021 in Austria, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. As part of the survey, respondents chose preferred sentences for

[Autotransplantation of the kidney 100 years after Imre Ullmann's pioneering operation].

The authors give an overview on renal autotransplantation on occasion of Emerich (Imre) Ullmann's pioneer operation 100 years ago. Ullmann was born in 1861 in Pécs, Hungary. After finishing the Vienna Medical School, he worked on the I. Surgical Clinic of the University of Vienna. In 1902, already as the chief of surgery of a Vienna hospital he successfully performed canine kidney autotransplantation, later also technically successful allo- and xenotransplantation. Human renal autotransplantations have been performed since the early 1960's mainly because of renovascular hypertension/aneurysm o

Usutu virus: an emerging flavivirus in Europe.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an African mosquito-borne flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis virus serocomplex. USUV is closely related to Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, and West Nile virus. USUV was discovered in South Africa in 1959. In Europe, the first true demonstration of circulation of USUV was reported in Austria in 2001 with a significant die-off of Eurasian blackbirds. In the subsequent years, USUV expanded to neighboring countries, including Italy, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland, England, Czech Republic, Greece, and Belgium, where i

Whole genome sequencing and characterization of a virulent Newcastle disease virus isolated from an outbreak in Sweden.

In this study, the complete genome sequence of a Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolate collected from an outbreak in 1995 in chickens was fully characterized and compared with other NDV sequences. The genome was found to be 15,192 nucleotides long and to consist of six genes in the order 3'-NP-P-M-F-HN-L-5', similar to other avian paramyxoviruses type-I. However, a six-nucleotide insertion was observed in the 5' non-coding regions of the nucleoprotein (NP) gene, a feature that is unique to some NDV isolates. The isolate shows the amino acid sequence (112)RRQKRF(117) at the cleavage site of the

Legislation of direct-to-consumer genetic testing in Europe: a fragmented regulatory landscape.

Despite the increasing availability of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing, it is currently unclear how such services are regulated in Europe, due to the lack of EU or national legislation specifically addressing this issue. In this article, we provide an overview of laws that could potentially impact the regulation of DTC genetic testing in 26 European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Swede

A White Death Among the Ranks. Tuberculosis in the Austro-Hungarian Army, 1882-1914.

This article is devoted to the incidence of tuberculosis in the Austro-Hungarian Imperial-Royal Army between the years 1882 and 1914, with a special focus on the region of Cisleithania. The first part of the article discusses the organisation of the Austro-Hungarian armed forces, drawing attention to those features of the organisation that may prove informative when researching the health status of the wider population as a whole. The question of the extent of the threat of tuberculosis in Austria-Hungary is then addressed, which shall allow us to move on to the incidence of the disease in the

Toxoplasma gondii infection in wild omnivorous and carnivorous animals in Central Europe - A brief overview.

Toxoplasmosis is an important zoonosis caused by the intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite is known to infect almost all warm blooded animals, and meat containing tissue cysts is one of the main sources of infection for omnivorous an carnivorous animals. Over recent years, increasing numbers of omnivorous and carnivorous animals have been drawn to urban or suburban areas by easy access to food or safe shelter, and the presence of wild animals has became more natural to urban residents. However, infected animals can act as intermediate hosts to T. gondii and contribute to the
