Maternal histories of depression and childhood maltreatment, authoritarian parenting, and daughter error-related negativity: Developmental model of adolescent daughter depression risk.

Maternal depression, maltreatment history, and authoritarian parenting styles are associated with adolescent depression, especially among girls. Individual characteristics, such as altered error-related negativity (ΔERN), an event-related potential biomarker implicated in internalizing disorders, may potentiate depression vulnerability among adolescent girls exposed to these risk factors. Yet, prior work has not evaluated the interplay among contextual and biological risk mechanisms in the development of girls' depression. We conducted a longitudinal study of biological mother-daughter dyads (

Differential Associations of Authoritarian Submission and Traditionalism with Fake-News Detection and Conspiracy-Claim Endorsement: Evidence from Two Romanian Samples in the 2024-2025 Electoral Cycle.

Susceptibility to misinformation-related content threatens democratic processes, yet the roles of individual authoritarianism components remain understudied. We report two independent Romanian studies conducted during the 2024-2025 electoral cycle, examining associations of aggression, conventionalism/traditionalism, and submission/conservatism with two outcomes: accuracy in identifying false news (Study 1, N = 427, RWA-15) and endorsement of conspiracy claims drawn from Romanian electoral discourse (Study 2, N = 170, VSA-6). Adjusted regression models showed that authoritarian submission was

Predicting hostility towards women: incel-related factors in a general sample of men.

Hostility towards women is a type of prejudice that can have adverse effects on women and society, but research on predictors of men's hostility towards women is limited. The present study primarily introduced predictors associated with misogynist involuntary celibates (incels), and then investigated whether loneliness, rejection, attractiveness, number of romantic and sexual partners, right-wing authoritarianism, and gaming predicted hostility towards women among a more general sample of men. A total of 473 men (aged 18-35, single, heterosexual, UK residents) recruited via Prolific answered t

A Cross-Cultural Study of Filial Piety and Palliative Care Knowledge: Moderating Effect of Culture and Universality of Filial Piety.

Filial piety is a Confucian concept derived from Chinese culture, which advocates a set of moral norms, values, and practices of respect and caring for one's parents. According to the dual-factor model of filial piety, reciprocal and authoritarian filial piety are two dimensions of filial piety. Reciprocal filial piety is concerned with sincere affection toward one's parent and a longstanding positive parent-child relationship, while authoritarian filial piety is about obedience to social obligations to one's parent, often by suppressing one's own wishes to conform the demands of the parent. Tracing the Impact of Parenting and Filial Piety Beliefs on Chinese Parent-Child Closeness and Conflict.

This study investigated longitudinal dyadic pathways from parents' and adult children's perceived parenting styles to relationship closeness and conflict, with dual filial piety beliefs as potential mediators. A total of 153 parent-child dyads from China participated in a two-wave survey conducted over a one-year interval. At Wave 1, participants reported on perceived parenting styles (authoritative and authoritarian), dual filial piety beliefs (reciprocal and authoritarian), and relationship closeness and conflict. At Wave 2, both parents and children reassessed their perceptions of relations

Structural problems in institutional care for youth.

In examining the relationship of emotional responsiveness and authoritarianism to the success of child welfare institutions as measured by running away behavior structural factors relating to both are discussed. The emotional deficit of the care giving situation seems to be a factor related to running away. Authoritarianism was not a related factor. Though both runaways and nonrunaways rated the institutional experience to be less emotionally responsive than their families, workers and runaways rated runaways experience as the least emotionally responsive. This is thought to relate to both run

Development and Validation of a Brief Form of the Weight Control/Blame Subscale of the Antifat Attitudes Test.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: The Weight Control/Blame (WCB) subscale of the Antifat Attitudes Test (AFAT) measures weight stigma, particularly beliefs linking obesity to personal responsibility, which contributes to discrimination and negative psychological, often reinforced by political ideologies and authoritarian attitudes. This study sought to (1) develop and validate an economic version of the WCB subscale and (2) evaluate associations between weight stigmatizing attitudes, authoritarian beliefs, sexist attitudes, and conspiracy mentality. METHODS: A four-item short form of the WCB subsc

Throwing Shade at Cyrus: Willingness to Censor Teen Homosexuality in Disney's Andi Mack.

The inclusion of a gay 13-year-old main character (Cyrus Goodman) on the Disney television series Andi Mack prompted social conservatives to call for the show's cancellation due to the alleged negative impact that Cyrus would have on the show's child audience. The present study explored individuals' support for the censorship of television portrayals of teen homosexuality in a sample of 232 United States residents who viewed clips from the series detailing Cyrus' storyline. Results found that censorship support was explained by homonegativity, conservative ideology, and authoritarianism, as we

Vagal flexibility to negative emotions moderates the relations between environmental risk and adjustment problems in childhood.

Neurobiological and social-contextual influences shape children's adjustment, yet limited biopsychosocial studies have integrated temporal features when modeling physiological regulation of emotion. This study explored whether a common underlying pattern of non-linear change in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) across emotional scenarios characterized 4-6 year-old children's parasympathetic reactivity (N = 180). Additionally, we tested whether dynamic RSA reactivity was an index of neurobiological susceptibility or a diathesis in the association between socioeconomic status, authoritarian par

Reactions to mandatory sentences in relation to the ethnic identity and criminal history of the offender.

This study investigated the responses of 181 participants (87 men, 94 women), from Adelaide, South Australia, to scenarios describing mandatory sentences for perpetrators of a property offense committed in the Northern Territory, Australia. Four scenarios that were randomly distributed varied ethnic identity (White Australian, Aboriginal Australian) and criminal history (first-time offender, third-time offender). Participants completed attitude measures for both mandatory sentencing and capital punishment, a right-wing authoritarianism scale, and a scale concerned with sentencing goals (retrib

Familial environment associated with type A behaviors and psychophysiological responses to stress in children.

This study tested two major hypotheses regarding the characteristics of family environments associated with children's Type A behaviors, anger frequency and expression, hostile outlook, hostility displayed during an interview, and cardiovascular responses to laboratory stressors. Two measures of family environment, Positive Affiliation and Authoritarianism, were derived by a factor analysis of the Family Environment Scale completed by parents. The sample consisted of 66 girls and 48 boys enrolled in Grades 2 through 12 from 114 families residing in a predominantly White, upper-middle-class sub

Does Parenting Influence the Enduring Impact of Severe Childhood Sexual Abuse on Psychiatric Resilience in Adulthood?

This study examined the effect of parenting on the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and psychiatric resilience in adulthood in a large female twin sample (n = 1423) assessed for severe CSA (i.e., attempted or completed intercourse before age 16). Severe CSA was associated with lower resilience to recent stressors in adulthood (defined as the difference between their internalizing symptoms and their predicted level of symptoms based on cumulative exposure to stressful life events). Subscales of the Parental Bonding Instrument were significantly associated with resilience. Specif

Parenting styles and body mass index trajectories from adolescence to adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Parenting styles such as authoritarian, disengaged, or permissive are thought to be associated with greater adolescent obesity risk than an authoritative style. This study assessed the relationship between parenting styles and changes in body mass index (BMI) from adolescence to young adulthood. METHOD: The study included self-reported data from adolescents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Factor mixture modeling, a data-driven approach, was used to classify participants into parenting style groups based on measures of acceptance and control. Latent growth m

Modeling Female Social Aggression: Predictors from Multiple Developmental Contexts.

A diverse array of proposed antecedents of social aggression (SA) were examined in two studies. This work is informed by ecological systems theory and examined predictors from the micro- and mesosystems. In Study 1, women (n = 284). completed measures of aggression, digit ratio, emotional intelligence (EI), agreeableness, parenting styles, attachment insecurity with parents and peers, and television (TV) consumption. Aggression correlated with EI, agreeableness, parental authoritarianism, attachment insecurity with fathers and peers, and TV consumption; these variables accounted for 22% of the

Exploring Neural Markers of Reward and Loss Processing and Problematic Parenting Styles A Mothers With and Without Histories of Depression.

Depressed mothers often experience parenting difficulties, which can persist after their symptoms have remitted. However, not all depressed mothers show parenting struggles, suggesting that there could be unidentified characteristics that increase risk. Specifically, neurobiological models emphasize that reward system deficits contribute to maladaptive parenting and depression, but no studies have evaluated how they could conjointly lead to parenting challenges. This study focused on event-related potential (ERP) components, the reward positivity (RewP), and feedback negativity (FN), which ass

Positive parenting mitigates the effects of poor self-regulation on body mass index trajectories from ages 4-15 years.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether parenting style moderates the effects of delay of gratification on body mass index (BMI) trajectories from ages 4-15 years. METHOD: Longitudinal data were analyzed for 778 children drawn from the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Parenting style (i.e., authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful) was created from measures of mothers' sensitivity and expectations for self-control when children were age 4 years. Self-regulation was also measured at 4 years using a well-known delay of gratification protocol. BMI was ca

Remembered parenting styles and adjustment in middle and late adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Authoritative parenting is the parenting style often associated with positive outcomes for children and adolescents. This study considers whether remembered parenting styles in childhood predict multiple dimensions of functioning in adulthood. METHODS: We used the 1995 National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States data set (N = 2,232) to assess the association between parenting behaviors remembered from childhood-classified as authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and uninvolved-and psychological well-being, depressive symptoms, and substance abuse, in a subsample

Relations Between Dual Filial Piety and Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles of Individuating Autonomy and Relating Autonomy.

Filial piety (FP) was formerly a Confucian concept that specifies how children should treat their elders. In recent years, some psychologists have postulated that there are considerable overlaps between Chinese FP and notions found in other cultures. They have redefined FP as a contextualized personality emphasizing the psychological schema of parent-child interaction so that it fits universal cultural contexts. Based on this theory construction, this study aimed to examine the effects of reciprocal FP and authoritarian FP on life satisfaction and the mediating roles of individuating autonomy

Risk-driven or authority-based? Unraveling public policy compliance during the pandemic in China.

BACKGROUND: Current research on pandemic compliance behavior primarily focuses on two motivational theories: normative and calculative motivations. Our study examines both by looking at public respect for authority and fear of infection risk to understand health policy compliance during COVID-19 in China. METHODS: We conducted a survey with 2,305 Chinese citizens, using authority value and risk perception as independent variables, compliance behavior as the dependent variable, and government trust and professional trust as mediators.
