Exploring artificial intelligence from a clinical perspective: A comparison and application analysis of two facial age predictors trained on a large-scale Chinese cosmetic patient database.

BACKGROUND: Age prediction powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used as an objective technique to assess the cosmetic effect of rejuvenation surgery. Existing age-estimation models are trained on public datasets with the Caucasian race as the main reference, thus they are impractical for clinical application in Chinese patients. METHODS: To develop and select an age-estimation model appropriate for Chinese patients receiving rejuvenation treatment, we obtained a face database of 10 529 images from 1821 patients from the author's hospital and selected two representative age-estimatio

Outcome Tracking in Facial Palsy.

Outcome tracking in facial palsy is multimodal, consisting of patient-reported outcome measures, clinician-graded scoring systems, objective assessment tools, and novel tools for layperson and spontaneity assessment. Patient-reported outcome measures are critical to understanding burden of disease in facial palsy and effects of interventions from the patient perspective. Clinician-graded scoring systems are inherently subjective and no 1 single system satisfies all needs. Objective assessment tools quantify facial movements but can be laborious. Recent advances in facial recognition technology

Manual and automated facial de-identification techniques for patient imaging with preservation of sinonasal anatomy.

PURPOSE: Facial recognition of reconstructed computed tomography (CT) scans poses patient privacy risks, necessitating reliable facial de-identification methods. Current methods obscure sinuses, turbinates, and other anatomy relevant for otolaryngology. We present a facial de-identification method that preserves these structures, along with two automated workflows for large-volume datasets. METHODS: A total of 20 adult head CTs from the New Mexico Decedent Image Database were included. Using 3D Slicer, a seed-growing technique was performed to label the skin around the face. This label was di

An intelligent context-aware facial emotion recognition system for hearing-impaired individuals using large language models and neural network-based feature fusion.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) plays a vital role in understanding human behavior and communications, with applications in human-computer interaction, surveillance, healthcare, and multimedia content analysis. Emotion recognition is challenging as it necessitates capturing and analysing subtle variations in facial expressions together with dynamic speech variations. Hearing impairment in youngsters and children has significant effects on social, emotional, and behavioural growth. Communication problems could affect the social and emotional improvement of a hearing-impaired individual. Emotio

Automatized analysis of children's exposure to child-directed speech in reschool settings: Validation and application.

The present study explored whether a tool for automatic detection and recognition of interactions and child-directed speech (CDS) in preschool classrooms could be developed, validated, and applied to non-coded video recordings representing children's classroom experiences. Using first-person video recordings collected by 13 preschool children during a morning in their classrooms, we extracted high-level audiovisual features from recordings using automatic speech recognition and computer vision services from a cloud computing provider. Using manual coding for interactions and transcriptions of

Multitask, Multilabel, and Multidomain Learning With Convolutional Networks for Emotion Recognition.

Automated emotion recognition in the wild from facial images remains a challenging problem. Although recent advances in deep learning have assumed a significant breakthrough in this topic, strong changes in pose, orientation, and point of view severely harm current approaches. In addition, the acquisition of labeled datasets is costly and the current state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms cannot model all the aforementioned difficulties. In this article, we propose applying a multitask learning loss function to share a common feature representation with other related tasks. Particularly, we

Recognition of the Cornelia de Lange syndrome phenotype with facial dysmorphology novel analysis.

Facial analysis systems are becoming available to healthcare providers to aid in the recognition of dysmorphic phenotypes associated with a multitude of genetic syndromes. These technologies automatically detect facial points and extract various measurements from images to recognize dysmorphic features and evaluate similarities to known facial patterns (gestalts). To evaluate such systems' usefulness for supporting the clinical practice of healthcare professionals, the recognition accuracy of the Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) phenotype was examined with FDNA's automated facial dysmorpholog

Clinical validation of a wearable system for emotional recognition based on biosignals.

The AUBADE system can be trained to classify a subject's feelings into six different emotional classes, derived from three of the basic emotions (happiness, disgust and fear). The performance of different classifiers was examined. Biosignals were recorded from 24 healthy subjects who viewed pictures designed to invoke different emotional responses. A psychologist evaluated the emotional status of the subjects by looking at their faces. During the training stage, information from 15 subjects was used to teach the system how to discriminate the emotional status of the subject based on the biosig

Parts-based representations of perceived face movements in the superior temporal sulcus.

Facial motion is a primary source of social information about other humans. Prior fMRI studies have identified regions of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) that respond specifically to perceived face movements (termed fSTS), but little is known about the nature of motion representations in these regions. Here we use fMRI and multivoxel pattern analysis to characterize the representational content of the fSTS. Participants viewed a set of specific eye and mouth movements, as well as combined eye and mouth movements. Our results demonstrate that fSTS response patterns contain information about

An automated whisker tracking tool for the rat facial nerve injury paradigm.

BACKGROUND: The two-dimensional videographic analysis of vibrissal movements in behaving rodents has become a standard method to estimate the degree of functional impairment and recovery after facial nerve injuries quantitatively. The main limitation of the method is the time consuming, uneconomic process of manually tracking the vibrissae in video sequences. NEW METHOD: We developed a novel tool allowing automated detection of untagged vibrissae (two on each side of the snout). To compare the new method with the standard manual tracking approach, we used videos of unrestrained rats with unil

Diagnosis and Screening of Velocardiofacial Syndrome by Evaluating Facial Photographs Using a Deep Learning-Based Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of rare genetic diseases, including velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), is essential for patient well-being. However, the rarity of these diseases and limited clinical experience of physicians make diagnosis challenging. Deep learning algorithms have emerged as promising tools for efficient and accurate diagnosis. This study investigates the use of a deep learning algorithm to develop a face recognition model for diagnosing VCFS. METHODS: The study used publicly available labeled face data sets to train the multitask cascaded convolutional neural networks model. Subs

Automated emotion recognition via video-based semantic embeddings.

INTRODUCTION: Automated emotion recognition systems often rely on acted datasets and categorical models that miss the nuance of spontaneous affect. METHODS: This work assembled a large corpus of authentic facial emotion expressions from naturalistic outpatient psychotherapy sessions, annotated with free-text descriptions by human labelers. These descriptions were embedded in a 768-dimensional semantic space using a fine-tuned German Sentence-BERT model. Transformer, BILSTM, and deep neural network architectures were trained to map facial landmark features to continuous emotion embeddings. RE

Facing up to Problem Gambling: Tracing the Emergence of Facial Recognition Technology as a means of Enforcing Voluntary Self-Exclusion.

Computer technology has long been touted as a means of increasing the effectiveness of voluntary self-exclusion schemes - especially in terms of relieving gaming venue staff of the task of manually identifying and verifying the status of new customers. This paper reports on the government-led implementation of facial recognition technology as part of an automated self-exclusion program in the city of Adelaide in South Australia-one of the first jurisdiction-wide enforcements of this controversial technology in small venue gambling. Drawing on stakeholder interviews, site visits and documentary

Acute Pain Recognition from Facial Expression Videos using Vision Transformers.

Pain assessment is significant for patients and clinicians in diagnosis and treatment injuries and disease. It could facilitate a patient's treatment process by monitoring patients' pain levels in an accurate and regular manner. Automated detection of pain from facial expressions is a useful technique to assess pain of patients with communication disabilities. In this study, video vision transformers (ViViT) enhanced for pain recognition tasks are presented to capture spatio-temporal, facial information relevant to estimating the binary classification of pain and, thus, to provide valuable ins

Training facial expression production in children on the autism spectrum.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show deficits in their ability to produce facial expressions. In this study, a group of children with ASD and IQ-matched, typically developing (TD) children were trained to produce "happy" and "angry" expressions with the FaceMaze computer game. FaceMaze uses an automated computer recognition system that analyzes the child's facial expression in real time. Before and after playing the Angry and Happy versions of FaceMaze, children posed "happy" and "angry" expressions. Naïve raters judged the post-FaceMaze "happy" and "angry" expressions of the ASD
