The autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular disease: role of n-3 PUFAs.

In the last decades, a large body of experimental and clinical evidence has been accumulated showing that cardiovascular diseases are often accompanied by an imbalance in the sympathetic-vagal outflow to the heart, resulting in a chronic adrenergic activation. The arterial baroreceptor system is a key component of mechanisms contributing to the neural regulation of the cardiovascular system. Several methods have been proposed to assess autonomic activity by analyzing heart rate and blood pressure changes either spontaneously occurring or following provocations. The autonomic nervous system has

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Patients With Parkinson Disease Having Depression.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Both depression and cardiovascular autonomic dysfunctions, such as orthostatic hypotension, supine hypertension, and the absence of normal nocturnal blood pressure (BP) fall ("nondipping"), occur relatively commonly in Parkinson disease (PD); however, the relationship between depression and cardiovascular autonomic abnormalities has not been established. In this study, we sought to determine whether the cardiovascular autonomic abnormalities found in PD are associated with depression. METHODS: Among 129 nondemented, levodopa-naive patients with mild PD, 44 had depression.

Autonomic nervous system and preventive treatment of ventricular arrhythmias in chagasic disease.

Non-pharmacological preventive treatment of sustained ventricular arrhythmias in chagasic disease is a challenge. Given that the involvement of the autonomic nervous system is one of its determinants, thoracic sympathectomy could be a valuable tool in some selected cases.

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system in gastro-esophageal reflux disease: Consequences for the cardiovascular system.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) implicates autonomic dysregulation of the lower esophageal sphincter tone. Our goal is to investigate whether this dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) function observed in isolated GERD cases can affect other systems, such as cardiovascular regulation. METHODS: Twenty-five participants were included in the study, 11 patients with isolated GERD and 14 controls. All patients and 7 controls responded to a COMposite Autonomic Symptoms Score 31 (COMPASS 31) questionnaire and underwent functional explorations

Autonomic Nervous System Indices in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis without Overt Cardiac Disease.

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease that may affect the heart and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). There is little knowledge regarding the degree of ANS involvement in SSc patients with unknown cardiac disease. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cardiac and pupillary autonomic functions in patients before cardiac involvement has emerged. METHODS: The study comprised 19 patients with SSc and 29 healthy controls. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis for time and frequency domains, as well as deep breathing test and Ewing maneuvers, were performed in all patients. Autom

Autonomic nervous system testing may not distinguish multiple system atrophy from Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Formal laboratory testing of autonomic function is reported to distinguish between patients with Parkinson's disease and those with multiple system atrophy (MSA), but such studies segregate patients according to clinical criteria that select those with autonomic dysfunction for the MSA category. OBJECTIVE: To characterise the profiles of autonomic disturbances in patients in whom the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease or MSA used criteria other than autonomic dysfunction. METHODS: 47 patients with parkinsonism and autonomic symptoms who had undergone autonomic laboratory testing we

Chronobiological aspects of autonomic nervous system function in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review.

Disruption of biological rhythms appears to play a role in Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to summarize findings, focusing on measurement tools and outcomes, from studies assessing dysautonomia in PD from a chronobiological perspective. We searched Pubmed and Embase in English and included 76 articles following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-four-hour Blood Pressure Measurement (24 h ABPM) was the most popular method for assessing chronobiological changes of autonomic function in PD. Reverse blood pressure (BP) dipping, i.e. increase in nighttime systolic BP, was a common finding in PD regardles

Salbutamol Worsens the Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction of Children With Sickle Cell Disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) patients with asthma have an increased rate of vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) and acute chest syndrome (ACS) episodes when compared to those without asthma. We hypothesized that either asthma diagnosis or bronchodilator treatment might aggravate SCD via their modulating effect on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). METHODS: Cross-sectional evaluation of heart rate variability (HRV) during pulmonary function tests, including salbutamol administration, in children with SCD receiving asthma treatment or not when compared to asthmatic children without SCD matche

Effects of subthalamic nucleus stimulation and levodopa on the autonomic nervous system in Parkinson's disease.

Dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Regarding motor disability, deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an effective treatment option in long lasting PD. The aims of this study were to examine whether STN stimulation has an influence on functions of the ANS and to compare these effects to those induced by levodopa. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during rest and orthostatic conditions, HR variability (HRV) and breathing-induced cutaneous sympathetic vasoconstriction (CVC) were tested in 14 PD patients treated wit

Trypanosoma cruzi strains and autonomic nervous system pathology in experimental Chagas disease.

Lesions involving the sympathetic (para-vertebral ganglia) and para-sympathetic ganglia of intestines (Auerbach plexus) and heart (right atrial ganglia) were comparatively analyzed in mice infected with either of three different strain types of Trypanosoma cruzi, during acute and chronic infection, in an attempt to understand the influence of parasite strain in causing autonomic nervous system pathology. Ganglionar involvement with neuronal destruction appeared related to inflammation, which most of the times extended from neighboring adipose and cardiac, smooth and striated muscular tissues.

Heart Rate Variability as an Indicator of Autonomic Nervous System Disturbance in Behcet's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic vasculiti where cardiac involvement is not common. Previous studies have shown that the incidence of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death (SCD) is higher in patients with BD than in the healthy population. Among various possible explanations, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has been suggested. Few studies have evaluated ANS function in patients with BD, and the results obtained are controversial. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess cardiac autonomic function by heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with BD; to evaluate ci

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction in the early stage.

A 54-year-old man presented with tremor and unusual behavior. He was admitted two months later because of dementia and myoclonus. Periodic synchronous discharges were observed on the electroencephalogram. Based on these findings, we diagnosed the case as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. About two weeks after admission, decubitus, bowel dysfunction and hypohidrosis occurred. We observed various autonomic nervous system dysfunctions such as abnormal pupillary response to autonomic drugs, reduced coefficient of variation of R-R interval, and abnormal diurnal blood pressure variation.

[QT interval and the autonomic nervous system in coronary disease and sick sinus syndrome].

The autonomous nervous system influence on sinus node (SN) in both physiological and pathological states is the most important factor determining its function. There are only few publications about autonomous nervous system action on electrophysiological properties of the human heart (ventricles), specially in patients with different types of sick sinus syndrome (SSS). Electrocardiograms of 113 patients (pts) with coronary heart disease, suspected for SSS, recorded during transesophageal atrial pacing before and after pharmacological denervation of the heart, were analysed. For heart denervati

Research progress on the improvement of cardiovascular diseases through the autonomic nervous system regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

Cardiovascular disease stands as a leading global cause of mortality. Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain-like Receptor Protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is widely acknowledged as pivotal factor in specific cardiovascular disease progression, such as myocardial infarction, heart failure. Recent investigations underscore a close interconnection between autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction and cardiac inflammation. It has been substantiated that sympathetic nervous system activation and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) assumes critical roles withinNLRP3 inflammasome pathway regulation, the

Evaluation of Cardiovascular Autonomic Nervous System in Essential Tremor and Tremor Dominant Parkinson's Disease.

(1) Background: The differential diagnosis of essential tremor (ET) and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (TDPD) can be challenging. Only a few studies have investigated the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in ET. However, some of these suggested that heart rate variability (HRV) might be useful in the differential diagnosis. (2) Methods: Demographic and clinical data, including medications and comorbidities, were collected from 15 TDPD patients, 19 ET patients, and 20 healthy controls. Assessment with the SCOPA-AUT questionnaire, 5 min HRV analysis in time and frequency domains, and evaluatio

Dysregulation of Autonomic Nervous System in Chagas' Heart Disease Is Associated with Altered Adipocytokines Levels.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) induces autonomic dysfunction and inflammatory activity, which may promote metabolic abnormalities. We studied metabolism and his correlation with Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and inflammation in CD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty subjects were divided into 4 groups: control group (CG), IF (indeterminate form) group; ECG group (ECG abnormalities and normal left ventricular systolic function), and LVD group (left ventricular sistolic dysfunction). Levels of adiponectin, leptin, insulin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) were assayed

[Neurocristopathy. The association of Hirschsprung's disease-ganglioneuroma with autonomic nervous system dysfunction in 2 children].

Two children with the coexistence of long segment Hirschsprung's disease, ganglioneuroblastoma with Ondine's curse in one case and autonomic nervous system impairment in the other are presented. All lesions may be related to aberrations of neural crest cell growth, their migration, or differentiation. A genetic etiology, and the link between Hirschsprung's disease and multiple endocrine adenomatosis is discussed. The combination of Hirschsprung's disease and a neurocristopathy strongly suggests that exploration of the autonomic nervous system and APUD system be carried out.

Relationship between autonomic nervous system function and endolymphatic space ratio in Ménière disease.

OBJECTIVES: Autonomic dysfunction is associated with Ménière disease (MD) and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Because the autonomic nervous system regulates blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during positional changes, these changes can be used to assess autonomic nervous system function. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between MD/BPPV and autonomic nervous system function based on BP, HR, and endolymphatic space (ELS) ratio measurements, and to examine the differences between the two diseases. METHODS: This retrospective study included 168 patients who underwent inner
