A wearable obstacle avoidance device for visually impaired individuals with cross-modal learning.

It is challenging for wearable obstacle avoidance devices to simultaneously meet practical demands of high reliability, rapid response, long-lasting duration, and usable design. Here we report a wearable obstacle avoidance device, comprising a set of self-developed glasses (weighing  ~400 grams, including an  ~80 grams battery) and a common smartphone. Specifically, the glasses collect the multi-modal data for comprehensive environmental perception, including video and depth modalities, and implement a depth-aided video compression module. This module not only adaptively compresses video data

Food avoidance learning based on voluntary wheel running in laboratory mice (Mus musculus).

Mice show a reluctance to eat unfamiliar food, when they first encounter it. This neophobic reaction is conventionally habituated by repeated trials: the mice gradually increase their consumption of the novel food. The new finding reported here is that the consumption remains low in mice that voluntarily run in activity wheels after the novel food access. This effect implies that running yields Pavlovian conditioned flavor aversion, which suppresses, otherwise increasing, consumption of the novel food. In the present research, the effect was demonstrated with a between-group design by pitting

Active and passive avoidance learning in rats neonatally treated with intraventricular 6-hydroxydopamine.

To clarify the behavioral characteristics of rats neonatally treated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), their performance on 4 aversive learning tasks, 3 active (shuttle, one-way, and rearing) avoidance tasks and one passive (step-through) avoidance task, was examined. On days 2 and 4 after birth, each rat of F344/Du strain received bilateral intraventricular injections of 6-OHDA (35 micrograms x 2) or vehicle solution following desmethylimipramine (20 mg/kg, s.c.) pretreatment. From day 90, each rat was trained in one of the 4 avoidance tasks. 6-OHDA-treated rats showed significantly less avoid

Effects of fetal and early postnatal thiamin deficiency on avoidance learning in rats.

Thiamin deficiency was induced in two groups of young rats during two stages of growth: deficiency 1, from 8 days prepartum to 10 days postpartum or deficiency 2, from 1 to 18 days postpartum. The deficiency was reversed by thiamin injections for 5 days and return to a normal diet following which animals were tested at 35 days of age. Body weights at 21 and 36 days of age were not significantly reduced by the deficiency nor was brain weight affected. Activity levels were not significantly reduced by deficiency 1 but were reduced in deficiency 2. Both active and passive avoidance learning were

Learned avoidance requires VTA KOR-mediated reductions in dopamine.

Proper learning from an aversive experience is essential for survival, yet it is an aberrant process in a wide range of mental disorders, as well as dopaminergic neurodegenerative disease. While the mesolimbic dopamine system is known to be essential for reward learning, the characterization of a potential pattern of dopamine signaling that guides avoidance remains unknown. Aversive stimuli may directly modulate dopamine signaling through the dynorphin/kappa opioid receptor (KOR) system, as kappa opioid receptors are expressed in this neural circuit and their activation is aversive in both rod

Avoidance habit learning in adolescents and young women with anorexia nervosa: an fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN), often with an onset in adolescence, is a complex eating disorder characterized by distorted body image, fear of weight gain, and extreme food restriction, leading to severe underweight. Excessive goal pursuit and avoidance behaviors have been proposed as key factors in AN, which over time may become over-trained into habits. METHODS: This study investigated the behavioral and neural correlates of habit learning in AN with an experiment consisting of three consecutive phases: (1) training goal-directed behavior, (2) avoidance learning, and (3) a habit test. Brief postnatal exposure to phenobarbital impairs passive avoidance learning and sensorimotor gating in rats.

Phenobarbital is the most commonly utilized drug for the treatment of neonatal seizures. However, mounting preclinical evidence suggests that even brief exposure to phenobarbital in the neonatal period can induce neuronal apoptosis, alterations in synaptic development, and long-lasting changes in behavioral functions. In the present report, we treated neonatal rat pups with phenobarbital and evaluated behavior in adulthood. Pups were treated initially with a loading dose (80 mg/kg) on postnatal day (P)7 and with a lower dose (40 mg/kg) on P8 and P9. We examined sensorimotor gating (prepulse in

The effects of archistriatal lesions on one-trial passive avoidance learning in the chick.

The avian archistriatum, part of which may be homologous with the mammalian amygdala, has been implicated in fear and avoidance behaviour. There is also evidence to suggest its involvement in learning. One-trial passive avoidance learning (PAL) has been used extensively to study memory formation in the chick. Young chicks will peck spontaneously at a small, visually conspicuous bead. If the bead has been coated with an aversive substance, the chicks show a disgust response and learn in a single trial not to peck a similar bead on subsequent presentation. Successful acquisition of this one-tria

Step-down-type passive avoidance- and escape-learning method. Suitability for experimental amnesia models.

A method for evaluating passive avoidance- and escape-learning responses simultaneously has been developed for the study of learning and memory in mice. Prolongation of the step-down latency and shortening of the escape latency in the retention test depended on the strength of the voltage of the electric shocks delivered during the training test. Therefore, the step-down latency and escape latency may be good parameters of learning and memory performance. By cycloheximide treatment immediately after training, the step-down latency and escape latency were shortened and prolonged, respectively,

Impaired action-safety learning and excessive relief during avoidance in patients with anxiety disorders.

Anxiety-related disorders are characterized by high levels of avoidance, but experimental research into avoidance learning in patients is scarce. To fill this gap, we compared healthy controls (HC, n = 47) with patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD, n = 33), panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA, n = 40), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD, n = 66) in a computer-based avoidance learning task, in order to examine (1) differences in rates of avoidance responses, (2) differences in action-safety learning during avoidance, and (3) differences in subjective relief following successf

Coconut Model for Learning First Steps of Craniotomy Techniques and Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Avoidance.

INTRODUCTION: Neurosurgery simulation has gained attention recently due to changes in the medical system. First-year neurosurgical residents in low-income countries usually perform their first craniotomy on a real subject. Development of high-fidelity, cheap, and largely available simulators is a challenge in residency training. An original model for the first steps of craniotomy with cerebrospinal fluid leak avoidance practice using a coconut is described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The coconut is a drupe from Cocos nucifera L. (coconut tree). The green coconut has 4 layers, and some similarity c

Dopamine and octopamine influence avoidance learning of honey bees in a place preference assay.

Biogenic amines are widely characterized in pathways evaluating reward and punishment, resulting in appropriate aversive or appetitive responses of vertebrates and invertebrates. We utilized the honey bee model and a newly developed spatial avoidance conditioning assay to probe effects of biogenic amines octopamine (OA) and dopamine (DA) on avoidance learning. In this new protocol non-harnessed bees associate a spatial color cue with mild electric shock punishment. After a number of experiences with color and shock the bees no longer enter the compartment associated with punishment. Intrinsic

Facilitation of spinal reflexes assists performing but not learning an obstacle-avoidance locomotor task.

The aim of this study was to investigate spinal reflex (SR) modulation during the performance and learning of a precision locomotor task. Healthy subjects had to minimize foot clearance when repeatedly stepping on a treadmill over a randomly approaching obstacle. The subjects walked with reduced vision and were informed about the approaching obstacle and task performance by acoustic warning and feedback signals, respectively. SRs were randomly evoked by tibial nerve stimulation (with non-nociceptive and nociceptive stimulus intensity) during the mid-stance phase in both normal and pre-obstacle

Moderate doses of ethanol partially reverse avoidance learning deficits in high-alcohol-drinking rats.

We previously reported that ethanol-naive high-alcohol-drinking (HAD1 and HAD2) rats exhibited selective deficits in active avoidance learning, as compared to low-alcohol-drinking (LAD1 and LAD2) rats, in a signaled bar-pressing task [Alcohol. Clin. Exp. Res. 24 (2000) 1778]. In the current study, we used appetitive and aversive learning tasks to assess whether administration of ethanol influences approach and avoidance learning in HAD and LAD rats. Rats were administered 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 g ethanol/kg body weight during appetitive and aversive conditioning sessions. We found that ethanol

Immunohistochemical estimation of rat brain somatostatin on avoidance learning impairment induced by thiamine deficiency.

In rats, on the 25th day after the start of a thiamine-deficient (TD) diet, impairment of avoidance learning was significantly induced in proportion to the decrease somatostatin (SST) fluorescence intensity in the cortex, amygdala, thalamus, hypothalamus, and hippocampus, including the CA1, CA2, and dentate gyrus (DG). Only a single injection of thiamine HCl (0.5 mg/rat, subcutaneous) on the 14th day after the start of a TD diet improved the amnesia to the level of the pair-fed control and prevented the decrease in the SST level. Whereas these reversal effects of thiamine treatment were not fo

The 5-HT1A agonist tandospirone disrupts retention but not acquisition of active avoidance learning.

To determine the effects of the 5-HT1A partial agonist tandospirone on acquisition and retention, mice were trained on a one-way active avoidance task and tested for retention 24 h later. Groups of mice were injected with either saline or 1, 5, or 10 mg/kg tandospirone 30 min before acquisition. Training was complete when animals achieved a criterion of five avoidances in a block of six trials. Results showed that tandospirone did not alter the rate of acquisition of the avoidance response, but retention was significantly disrupted by the 1- and 5-mg/kg doses. These findings confirm previous s

Parsing decision making processes in prefrontal cortex: response inhibition, overcoming learned avoidance, and reversal learning.

Reversal learning refers to the ability to inhibit or switch responding to an object when the object-reward contingency changes. Deficits in this process are related to social abnormalities, impulsiveness, and a number of psychiatric disorders. A range of neural regions play a role in this process, including dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). However, determining the specific functional contribution of each region has proved difficult, in part because reversal learning involves multiple cognitive subprocesses such as

Impaired Learning From Errors and Punishments and Maladaptive Avoidance-General Mechanisms Underlying Self-Regulation Disorders?

Self-regulation (SR) is an important human function that relates to quality of life in multiple domains including mental health. Previous studies have found important correlates of low SR including impulsivity and poor emotional regulation; however, underpinnings of low SR are incompletely understood. Individuals low in SR frequently engage in maladaptive behaviors (substance abuse, procrastination, etc.) despite negative consequences. This phenomenon suggests that impaired learning from errors and punishments may be important mechanisms underlying low SR. Consistently, previous studies observ

Involvement of neurotransmitters in the action of apelin-13 on passive avoidance learning in mice.

The widespread distribution of apelin-13 and apelin receptors in the brain suggests an important function of this neuropeptide in the brain that has not been explored extensively so far. In the present work, apelin-13 was found to facilitate the consolidation of passive avoidance learning in mice. In order to assess the possible involvement of transmitters in this action, the animals were pretreated with the following receptor blockers in doses which themselves did not influence the behavioral paradigm: phenoxybenzamine (a nonselective α-adrenergic receptor antagonist), propranolol (a β-adrene
