OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new feeding and eating disorder category in DSM-5 characterized by extreme food avoidance/restriction. Much is unknown about ARFID, with limited understanding of its prevalence and comorbidities in general pediatric populations. This study aimed to classify ARFID prevalence and characteristics in children within the Generation R Study, a population-based Dutch cohort (N = 2,862).
METHOD: ARFID was assessed via an Index that comprised parent-reported questionnaires and researcher-assessed measures of picky eating, ene

OBJECTIVE: This proof-of-concept study explores the role of aberrant interoception as a possible mechanism underlying restrictive eating symptoms in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) compared to anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy comparisons (HC).
METHOD: We report preliminary normative adolescent interoceptive data in HCs (n = 100) compared to adolescents with ARFID (n = 30) and AN (N = 23). Adolescents (12-18) participated in a one-time virtual visit to assess heartrate guessing accuracy (interoceptive accuracy), correlation between confidence in heartrate guess and accuracy

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare clinical symptoms and psychometric analysis of adult patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) with those with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHOD: We completed a retrospective review of adult patients with a feeding and eating disorder assessed between 1990 and 2005 that qualified for a diagnosis of ARFID. Patients with ARFID were compared with those with AN, with respect to the demographics, clinical symptoms and psychometric analysis.
RESULTS: Using the criteria of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 95 (9.2%) of 102

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare clinical characteristics of patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) to those with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHOD: A retrospective review of adolescent eating disorder (ED) patients assessed between 2000 and 2011 that qualified for a diagnosis of ARFID was completed. A matched AN sample was used to compare characteristics between groups.
RESULTS: Two hundred and five patients met inclusion criteria and were reviewed in detail. Of these, 34 (5%) patients met criteria for ARFID. A matched sample of 36 patients with AN was used to draw comp

A young woman presented with significant weight loss and malnutrition secondary to decreased food intake. Her presentation was felt to be consistent with a psychiatric diagnosis of avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). She received 3 years of treatment for ARFID, but failed to make significant progress and ultimately required a feeding tube. Incidentally, she noted severe visual field changes at this time, which triggered further workup including an MRI of the head. This revealed the true diagnosis of a suprasellar and pineal germinoma. There are several cases in the literature of

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews available assessment instruments for three of the feeding and eating disorder diagnostic categories: avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), pica, and rumination disorder (RD). It includes an overview of the current status of screening tools, questionnaire measures, and diagnostic instruments.
RECENT FINDINGS: Screening instruments are available for all three disorders; however, for pica and RD, these typically include single screening items only and do not cover any specific features of these presentations. Only one questionnaire suitable fo

Zickgraf and colleagues propose an elegant revised framework for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder that would recognize it as a diagnosis based on the presence of specific eating behaviors, and, importantly, allow for it to be diagnosed alongside other medical and psychiatric conditions, including other eating disorders. While likely to have good ecological validity, this radical proposal challenges the general conceptualization of ARFID as the eating disorder in which weight- and shape-concerns are not present. Here, we consider whether two diagnoses are indeed better than one, raisin

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate whether individuals with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) experience unhelpful cognitions that overlap with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). It also examines whether these cognitions play a role in driving problematic eating behaviours that are typically associated with AN because they are designed to prevent weight gain.
METHODS: There were 184 participants (68 individuals with AN, 61 individuals with ARFID, and 55 people with no eating disorder) who were screened using Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) criteria. Participants were an adul

Eating disorders can be notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat. This patient is an 18-year-old female who presents to care severely underweight and notably cachexic. For a number of years, she had experienced depressive symptoms, anxiety, and continued loss of appetite. She denied purposefully restricting foods, recognized that she was thin, and denied a fear of gaining weight. She was admitted to a disordered eating unit for refeeding and during her inpatient stay disclosed that she had a long-standing "hatred of face." Ultimately, she received the diagnoses of avoidant/restrictive food

Background/Objectives: Patients with food allergy (FA) may exhibit dysfunctional eating behaviours and/or food aversions that extend beyond the necessary allergen elimination diet and may result in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) or food neophobia (FN); however, no data are available on adults. This study aimed to explore ARFID, FN, FA anxiety, and eating styles in adults with FA, analysing influences of sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: This cross-sectional preliminary study involved 79 adults with FA, who completed the Nine Item ARFID screen (NIAS), Food Neoph

OBJECTIVE: Although several assessments have been developed to diagnose or measure avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) symptoms, few studies have validated these tools in nonclinical and adult samples. This study explored the validity of two self- and parent/guardian-report ARFID screening measures in identifying adults and children who may have ARFID within a large community sample.
METHOD: Fifty participants (divided into two groups: 25 adults and 25 parents/guardians of children) were selected from the ARFID Genes and Environment study, which enrolled over 3000 adults and par

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) first entered the psychiatric nosology with the 2013 publication of DSM-5. Unlike binge eating disorder (BED), which was also new to DSM-5 but which had first been described by Stunkard in 1959,1,2 ARFID had never been described in the psychiatric literature as a single diagnostic entity. The new diagnosis encompassed clinical constructs that were previously proposed and studied but not described in DSM (ie, causes of "non-organic failure to thrive" including infantile anorexia and post-traumatic feeding disorder,3 and extreme food selectivity

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with rare diseases represent a population that may be at risk for an avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This study aimed to quantitatively examine the symptoms of ARFID in a sample of children and adolescents with rare diseases and their association with sociodemographic characteristics, eating disorder psychopathology, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and mental health. METHODS: In this observational study, data from 309 families of children with rare diseases drawn from a multicenter clinical study were used to estimate the prevalen

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) occurs in individuals across all weight ranges and age groups. While previous studies primarily focused on children and individuals with underweight, research on ARFID in adults with higher weight is virtually non-existent. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether adults with (1) ARFID symptoms and (2) ARFID diagnosis differ clinically based on weight status (underweight, normal weight, overweight/obesity).
METHODS: Adults from the population participated in an online survey and optional clinical interview to

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 2-year course and outcomes of full and subthreshold avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) in youth aged 9 to 23 years at baseline using a prospective longitudinal design to characterize the remission and persistence of ARFID, evaluate diagnostic crossover, and identify predictors of outcome. Greater severity in each ARFID profile-sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, and lack of interest-was hypothesized to predict greater likelihood of illness persistence, controlling for age, sex, body mass index percentile, ARFID treatment status, and bas

PURPOSE: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) was recently characterized, according to the DSM-5 classification, as a feeding and eating disorder (FED). However, ARFID remains poorly known by most pediatricians, but also by psychiatrists and primary care professionals. Despite the fact that patients with ARFID generally have a higher BMI than patients with anorexia nervosa, our purpose was to highlight the fact that they may present severe nutritional deficiencies and major somatic complications when the diagnosis is delayed.
METHOD: We describe here a case of a 16-year-old boy w

We conducted a study of the clinical presentation and outcome in patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), aged 15-40years, and compared this group to an anorexia nervosa (AN) group in a Japanese sample. A retrospective chart review was completed on 245 patients with feeding and eating disorders (FEDs), analyzing prevalence, clinical presentation, psychopathological properties, and outcomes. Using the DSM-5 criteria, 27 (11.0%) out of the 245 patients with a FED met the criteria for ARFID at entry. All patients with ARFID were women. In terms of eating disorder symptoms,

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a diagnosis in diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders-5 (DSM-5) manifested by persistent failure to meet nutritional and/or energy needs. Pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) often causes pelvic discomfort in addition to constipation and painful bowel movements. Current literature on ARFID is sparse and focuses on the pediatric and adolescent population. No association between PNE and ARFID has been described. We present a case of ARFID in an adult male with PNE resulting from subsequent scarring from testicular cancer surgery. The

The Avoidant-restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) was included in the fifth edition of the DSM in 2013 and in the BNO-11 diagnostic manual in 2019. Prior to this, the problem was often unrecognised or diagnosed as an eating disorder not otherwise specified or feeding and eating disorders of infancy or early childhood. The new diagnosis allows for better targeting of patients who have not been diagnosed earlier, as well as for the diagnosis of patients over the age of six. The authors, in their review, describe the diagnostic features and symptom profile of ARFID, and they discuss the role

Central to avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a pattern of food restriction leading to impairments in growth, nutrition, and psychosocial functioning. Some children with ARFID do not eat enough food overall (insufficient volume), some do not eat enough different kinds of food (insufficient variety), and some struggle with both challenges. Since its introduction to the psychiatric nomenclature, ARFID has garnered research attention with leading scientists working to adapt existing evidence-based eating disorder treatments for application to ARFID. One such candidate treatment
