Survey of Gastrointestinal Parasites and Lungworms in Cats and Dogs from Terceira and São Miguel Islands, Azores.

Parasitic diseases can affect animal health and welfare, and they may also constitute a danger to public health, particularly in island ecosystems. Fecal samples were collected from 205 dogs and 115 cats on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira, Azores archipelago (Portugal), using the Willis flotation technique and modified Baermann method, for further analysis. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitism in dogs was 53%, with the following results: Ancylostomatidae (hookworms) (42.44%), Trichuris vulpis (17.56%), Toxocara canis (12.68%) and Cystoisospora spp. (4.39%). In cats, the

Measuring progress against cancer in the Azores, Portugal: Incidence, survival, and mortality trends and projections to 2025.

BACKGROUND: Measuring progress against cancer is more accurate when trends in incidence, survival, and mortality are interpreted simultaneously. Our study aims to analyze how these key metrics have evolved over time in the Azores, Portugal. METHODS: Data for incident cases diagnosed in 1997-2016 and followed up through December 31, 2017 were obtained from the Azores Cancer Registry. Data for cancer deaths that occurred in 1991-2016 were obtained from Statistics Portugal. To estimate temporal trends, we applied a joinpoint model to age-adjusted rates. We estimated five-year net survival within

Intra- and inter-specific variability in total and methylmercury bioaccumulation by eight marine fish species from the Azores.

We relate fish biological and ecological characteristics to total and organic mercury concentrations to determine whether accumulation is influenced by trophic level, Hg concentration in the diet, and vertical distribution. Levels of total mercury and methylmercury were determined in the muscle tissue of eight species of fish: Pagellus acarne, Trachurus picturatus, Phycis phycis, P. blennoides, Polyprion americanus, Conger conger, Lepidopus caudatus and Mora moro, caught in the Azores. All such fishes are commercially valuable and were selected to include species from a wide range of vertical

Paralytic Shellfish Toxins Occurrence in Non-Traditional Invertebrate Vectors from North Atlantic Waters (Azores, Madeira, and Morocco).

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are potent alkaloids of microalgal and cyanobacterial origin, with worldwide distribution. Over the last 20 years, the number of poisoning incidents has declined as a result of the implementation of legislation and monitoring programs based on bivalves. In the summer of 2012 and 2013, we collected a total of 98 samples from 23 different species belonging to benthic and subtidal organisms, such as echinoderms, crustaceans, bivalves, and gastropods. The sampling locations were Madeira, São Miguel Island (Azores archipelago), and the northwestern coast of Morocco

Role of AzoR, a LysR-type transcriptional regulator, in SmeVWX pump-mediated antibiotic resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

BACKGROUND: The SmeVWX efflux pump of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia contributes to menadione (MD) tolerance and resistance to chloramphenicol, quinolones and tetracycline. The components of the SmeVWX efflux pump are encoded by a five-gene operon, smeU1VWU2X. We have previously demonstrated that the smeU1VWU2X operon is intrinsically unexpressed and inducibly expressed by MD via a SoxR- and SmeRv-involved regulatory circuit in S. maltophilia KJ. We also inferred that there should be other regulator(s) involved in MD-mediated smeU1VWU2X expression in addition to SoxR and SmeRv. OBJECTIVES: To i

Marine tardigrades of Princess Alice Bank (Azores, Northeast Atlantic) with a description of a new species of Quisarctus Fujimoto, 2015.

A new marine tardigrade, Quisarctus armatus sp. nov., found in samples from 151306 m depths at the Princess Alice Bank (PAB), south of the Azores archipelago, is described in this study. It is the second species in the genus and differs from its putative sister species Q. yasumurai by the shape of leg IV sensory organ, the presence of lipoid eyes, a partially folded cuticle of the digits and an elongated mouth cone. Quisarctus armatus sp. nov. shows sexual dimorphism with the length of primary clavae, the shape of leg IV sensory organ, and with differently shaped cirri E in females and males.

Ectopic calcification among families in the Azores: clinical and radiologic manifestations in families with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and chondrocalcinosis.

OBJECTIVE: Twelve families that were multiply affected with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and/or chondrocalcinosis, were identified on the island of Terceira, The Azores, potentially supporting the hypothesis that the 2 disorders share common etiopathogenic factors. The present study was undertaken to investigate this hypothesis. METHODS: One hundred three individuals from 12 unrelated families were assessed. Probands were identified from patients attending the Rheumatic Diseases Clinic, Hospital de Santo Espírito, in The Azores. Family members were assessed by rheumatologis

Parasite island syndromes in the context of nidicolous ectoparasites: Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) in wild passerine birds from Azores Archipelago.

Island syndrome, previously established for isolation process of insular vertebrates' populations, have been adapted to insular parasites communities, termed parasite island syndromes. In this work, were studied for the first time the insular syndromes for nidicolous ectoparasites of the bird species, Turdus merula, Sylvia atricapilla, Fringilla coelebs and Erithacus rubecula from Azores and the mainland Portugal. Flea species were only recorded on Azorean birds, namely Dasypsyllus gallinulae and Ctenocephalides felis felis, known as not host-specific parasites. In the absence of shared flea s

Natural selection at the MJD locus: phenotypic diversity, survival and fertility among Machado-Joseph Disease patients from the Azores.

Machado-Joseph Disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder of adult onset, associated with the expansion of a (CAG)n tract in the coding region of the causative gene, localized on 14q32.1. Machado-Joseph Disease shows non-Mendelian features typical of other triplet repeat disorders, including clinical heterogeneity, variable age at onset and anticipation. Three phenotypes have been proposed (clinical types 1, 2 and 3). Type 1 is associated with early age at onset and a high repeat number of the CAG sequence, and Types 2 and 3 have later onset and lower numbers of CAG repe

Molecular identification of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Troglostrongylus brevior and Angiostrongylus chabaudi in domestic cats from the Azores Islands (Portugal).

Domestic cats can be infected with various cardiopulmonary metastrongylids. Although A. abstrusus is widely distributed globally, data regarding the occurrence of T. brevior and A. chaubaudi in Portugal are currently nonexistent. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of cardiopulmonary parasite species in domestic cats from the Azores, Portugal, using copromicroscopy and molecular methods. A total of 57 domestic cats were included in this study, and fecal samples were previously analyzed using the Baermann technique. The detected larvae were collected, morphologically identified, and subse

Association of bovine papillomavirus type 2 (BPV-2) and urinary bladder tumours in cattle from the Azores archipelago.

Urinary bladder tumours in cattle are caused by chronic ingestion of bracken fern and BPV-1/2 infection. The objective of the present study was to assess if BPV-2 was present in urinary bladder lesions from cattle with chronic enzootic haematuria (CEH) from the Azores archipelago (Portugal), in order to gain further information regarding the epidemiologic distribution of this virus. Samples were analysed using PCR specific primers for BPV-2 DNA and an immunohistochemistry for BPV E5 oncoprotein detection. We found a 28% incidence rate of BPV-2 DNA in different types of tumours and cystitis cas

Predicting the distribution and abundance of abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in the deep sea of the Azores (North Atlantic).

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), represents a significant percentage of the global plastic pollution, currently considered one of the major sources from sea-based activities. However, there is still limited understanding of the quantities of ALDFG present on the seafloor and their impacts. In this study, data on the presence of ALDFG was obtained from a large archive of seafloor video footage (351 dives) collected by different imaging platforms in the Azores region over 15 years (2006-2020). Most ALDFG items observed in the images relate to the local bottom longline fishery

Harnessing conversational generative artificial intelligence and natural language processing to address the colorectal cancer screening adherence gap: the Azores endeavour.

Organised colorectal cancer (CRC) screening reduces mortality, yet participation routinely falls short of policy targets, a gap most acute in structurally disadvantaged, insular, and rapidly ageing populations. The Azores, an outermost European Union archipelago, exemplifies this challenge: CRC accounts for 10% of regional cancer diagnoses and is the second leading oncological cause of potential years of life lost, with 2024 mortality (24.9 per 100,000) exceeding mainland Portugal. Despite a mature organised screening programme (ROCCRA), archipelago-wide participation stands at just 30.3%, wit

Frequency of the CCR5-delta32 mutation in the Atlantic island populations of Madeira, the Azores, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé e Príncipe.

There is evidence that the CCR5-delta32 mutation confers protection against HIV-1 infection to homozygous individuals. It is believed that this mutation spread through Europe with the Vikings and that it has been subjected to positive selection, leading to a high frequency in Europe (approximately 10%). We carried out the present study to determine the 32-bp deletion allele and genotype frequencies of the CCR5 gene (CCR5-delta32) in the Atlantic island populations of Madeira, the Azores, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé e Principe. These Atlantic archipelagos were all colonized by the Portuguese in th

Integrated epidemiological and molecular analysis of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis isolates in dairy calves from Terceira Island, Azores.

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis are major enteric pathogens in neonatal calves, contributing to gastrointestinal disease and raising concerns due to their zoonotic potential. Despite their global distribution, little is known about their occurrence and genetic diversity in insular regions such as the Azores archipelago (Portugal). This study investigated the prevalence, distribution, genetic diversity, and farm-level risk factors associated with these parasites in dairy calves from Terceira Island. Fecal samples (n = 142) from 28 farms were examined by microscopy, direct immunofluo

Occurrence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in soils subjected to livestock grazing in Azores archipelago: an environment-health pollution issue?

Antibiotics are successful drugs used in human and animal therapy; however, they must be considered as environmental pollutants. This study aims to isolate and characterize the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli soil from Azores Archipelago subjected to livestock agricultural practices. Twenty-four soil samples were collected from three different pasture systems with different number of cattle heads, and from a control site. Antibiotic susceptibility method was performed by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method against 16 antibiotics, and the presence of genes encoding

Linking Zetaproteobacterial diversity and substratum type in iron-rich microbial mats from the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (EMSO-Azores observatory).

Zetaproteobacteria have been reported in different marine and terrestrial environments all over the globe. They play an essential role in marine iron-rich microbial mats, as one of their autotrophic primary producers, oxidizing Fe(II) and producing Fe-oxyhydroxides with different morphologies. Here, we study and compare the Zetaproteobacterial communities of iron-rich microbial mats from six different sites of the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field through the use of the Zetaproteobacterial operational taxonomic unit (ZetaOTU) classification. We report for the first time the Zetaproteobacterial c

Empowerment and Community Process Diagnosis to Promote Epidemiological Surveillance of Nursing Diagnoses: A MAIEC-Based Study in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Portugal.

This study assessed community process and empowerment in a Primary Healthcare Island Unit in the Azores to support the implementation of Epidemiological Surveillance of Nursing Diagnoses (ESND), focusing on three priority areas: tobacco use, drug dependence, and adolescent decision-making related to sexuality and life planning. Strengthening the visibility of nursing-sensitive phenomena requires integrating nursing diagnoses into epidemiological surveillance systems. A multimethod descriptive study was conducted between September and November 2025, combining document analysis, a community empo
