Analysis of the nitrogen-fixing ability of the diazotrophic community living in the rice rhizosphere using a novel test tube chemostat culture.

The rice rhizosphere is a hot spot for nitrogen fixation using carbon sources from root exudates. We herein investigated the intensity of the nitrogen-fixing ability of each diazotroph interacting with other bacteria within the rhizosphere microbiota. We established the Test Tube Chemostat replicating Rice Rhizosphere (TCRR) based on four characteristics of the rice rhizosphere: root exudates, percolation, radial oxygen loss, and soil. The TCRR flora constructed by culturing paddy soil using TCRR showed the pH and high nitrogen-fixing ability of the rice rhizosphere. Twenty-five species of dia

Abscisic acid-generating bacteria can reduce Cd concentration in pakchoi grown in Cd-contaminated soil.

Contamination of vegetable plants with cadmium (Cd) has become a serious issue in recent years. In the present study, pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) grown in Cd-contaminated soil inoculated with abscisic acid (ABA)-generating bacteria, Azospirillum brasilense and Bacillus subtilis, showed 28%-281% and 26%-255% greater biomass, and 40%-79% and 43%-77% lower Cd concentrations, respectively, than those of the controlbacteria-free plants. These treatments also alleviated the Cd-induced photosynthesis inhibition and oxidative damage (indicated by malondialdehyde [MDA], H2O2, and O2• -). Furthermor

Salicylic Acid Biosynthesis and Metabolism: A Divergent Pathway for Plants and Bacteria.

Salicylic acid (SA) is an active secondary metabolite that occurs in bacteria, fungi, and plants. SA and its derivatives (collectively called salicylates) are synthesized from chorismate (derived from shikimate pathway). SA is considered an important phytohormone that regulates various aspects of plant growth, environmental stress, and defense responses against pathogens. Besides plants, a large number of bacterial species, such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Azospirillum, Salmonella, Achromobacter, Vibrio, Yersinia, and Mycobacteria, have been reported to synthesize salicylates through the NRPS/PK

Effect of external resistance on the sensitivity of microbial fuel cell biosensor for detection of different types of pollutants.

The relatively poor sensitivity is the main bottleneck restricting the application of microbial fuel cell biosensor (MFC-biosensor) for toxicity monitoring. Previous studies have shown that external resistance (Rext) had an obvious effect on sensor sensitivity. However, these studies reported different results and the reason of this discrepancy was not clear. The objective of this research was to observe the effect of Rext on sensor sensitivity when detecting different types of pollutants and reveal its microbiological mechanism. Results demonstrated that the optimal Rext of MFC-biosensor vari

Antimicrobial Properties and Ecotoxicity of Azo Oxime Ether - Emerging First-in-class Fungicide for Crop Protection.

Currently, the resistance of phytopathogenic fungi to widely used fungicides is increasing. The intensification of agricultural production due to population growth precludes the abandonment of chemical plant protection products. Therefore, the search for new compounds with fungicidal activity represents an urgent research direction. In this study, the biological activity (fungicidal and antimicrobial properties) and ecotoxicological profile of a leading compound from novel fungicide class, azo oxime ethers, were investigated. The test compound (TC) inhibited the growth of several phytopathogen

Rhizobacterial Modulation of Maize Defense Alters Herbivore Performance and Parasitoid Behavior.

The association between plants and beneficial soil microorganisms can profoundly influence aboveground trophic interactions, yet these effects are often context-dependent. Although plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are increasingly used in maize production, little is known about how these microorganisms affect maize defenses against herbivores and their natural enemies. Here, we investigated the effects of the PGPR Azospirillum brasilense Ab-V5 on maize interactions with the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda and its larval parasitoid Aleiodes ceres. Our findings revealed that inocu

Mitigation of micropollutant toxicity in treated wastewater using the H2O2/S2O82-/UVC process: An ecotoxicological perspective for agricultural reuse.

Advanced oxidation processes can efficiently degrade organic micropollutants in wastewater. However, chemical assessment alone does not ensure that treated effluents are biologically compatible for reuse, as residual contaminants and transformation products may have toxic effects. Thus, this study evaluated the efficiency of the previously optimized H2O2/S2O82‒/UVC process for mitigating the ecotoxicological effects of municipal wastewater enriched with colchicine, nitazoxanide, and sulfamethoxazole, considering its potential application for agricultural reuse. The approach was based on multip

Tolerance of microorganisms to residual herbicides found in eucalyptus plantations.

Competition with weeds is one of the main factors that limit the development of forest species. Some herbicides used to control these plants have a residual effect on the soil. Bioremediation is an alternative to decontaminate these areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of Aspergillus niger, Penicillium pinophilum and Trichoderma sp. and its degrading potential on residual effect herbicides. The tolerance of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas sp. and Azospirillum brasilense to herbicides was also evaluated. The herbicides used in this study were indaziflam, sulfentrazone, sulf

Isolation of bacterial strains from bovine fecal microflora capable of degradation of ceftiofur.

Ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin used to treat bacterial infections in animals, is degraded in bovine feces but the specific bacteria involved are unknown. To find the bacteria involved in ceftiofur metabolism, the bovine fecal microflora was screened. Twenty-one nonidentical strains of bovine fecal bacteria were isolated on media containing 1-32 microg ml(-1) of ceftiofur. The cultures were incubated with 5 microg ml(-1) ceftiofur for different times, then centrifuged and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Three strains of Bacillus spp., two strains of Roseomonas s

Elucidating applied voltage on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial electrolysis cell: Focusing on its transmission between anolyte and biofilm microbes.

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) system to treat wastewater containing antibiotics has been researched actively in past years. However, the fate of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in MEC is not fully revealed. The effect of applied voltage on the migration of ARGs between anolyte and biofilm microbes via examining the microbial physiology and abundances of macrolide resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was elucidated in this research. Results showed that the abundance of MRGs and MGEs was decreased in the anolyte, but their abundances were increased on the electrode bi

Friends and Foes: Bacteria of the Hydroponic Plant Microbiome.

Hydroponic greenhouses and vertical farms provide an alternative crop production strategy in regions that experience low temperatures, suboptimal sunlight, or inadequate soil quality. However, hydroponic systems are soilless and, therefore, have vastly different bacterial microbiota than plants grown in soil. This review highlights some of the most prevalent plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and destructive phytopathogenic bacteria that dominate hydroponic systems. A complete understanding of which bacteria increase hydroponic crop yields and ways to mitigate crop loss from disease are cr

Enhanced Pb immobilization by CaO/MgO-modified soybean residue (okara) in phosphate mining wasteland soil: Mechanism and microbial community structure.

Lead (Pb) contamination is an inevitable consequence of phosphate mining, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. This study investigated the use of CaO/MgO-modified okara (CMS) as an eco-friendly approach to remediate Pb-contaminated soils from phosphate mining wastelands. In the present study, following 30 d of CMS application, the exchangeable Pb content was significantly decreased to 10.46%, with the majority of Pb transforming into more stable forms: carbonate-bound Pb (56.44%), Fe/Mn oxide-bound Pb (11.03%), and organic-bound Pb (19.58%). Additionally, the trea

Dynamics of the role of LacMeta laccase in the complete degradation and detoxification of malachite green.

Laccases highlight for xenobiotic bioremediation, as well as application in the fine chemical, textile, biofuel and food industries. In a previous work, we described the preliminary characterization of laccase LacMeta, a promising enzyme for the bioremediation of dyes, able to decolorization malachite green (MG), trypan blue, methylene blue. Here we demonstrate that LacMeta is indeed suitable for the complete degradation and detoxification of MG dye, not just for its discoloration, since some works show false positives due to the formation of colorless intermediates such as leucomalachite. Auxin-rhizomicrobiome interactions as a driver of climate-resilient root architecture: a conceptual framework for sustainable agriculture.

Abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity represent major constraints to global crop productivity, necessitating innovative strategies for enhancing plant resilience. As a critical regulator of root system architecture, auxin (specifically indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)) functions as a vital cross-kingdom signaling molecule that mediates dynamic interactions between plants and auxin-synthesizing rhizosphere microorganisms. This review explores the role of auxin as a cross-kingdom signaling molecule mediating interactions between plants and the rhizosphere microbiome. Auxin-producing plant grow

Chronic Nitrogen Deposition Alters Diazotrophic Community Composition, Reduces Biological Nitrogen Fixation, and Restructures Fungal-Diazotroph CO-Occurrence Networks in Deadwood.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by diazotrophs contributes to increasing nitrogen (N) availability in nutrient-poor deadwood during the decomposition process. However, chronically elevated atmospheric N deposition may increase N availability, thereby reshaping diazotrophic community and suppressing BNF. We simulated high N deposition by repeatedly applying ammonium-nitrate solution to deadwood of 13 tree species over 9 years (N addition) and compared diazotrophic community composition and BNF rates with untreated controls. Deadwood N concentrations increased over time in both control and N

Process optimization of struvite recovered from slaughterhouse wastewater and its fertilizing efficacy in amendment of biofertilizer.

The intensive discharge of slaughterhouse waste into water bodies increases Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) in the wastewater and leads to various environmental problems. On the other hand, the increasing treatment effort after the extraction of these valuable nutrients in the commercial fertilizer reduces the dependence on scarce phosphate resources. The viable solution is to recover N, P as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) from nutrient rich waste water as a small scale treatment unit application. The main parameters that have a significant impact on the process, including pH, Mg: P rati
