The association between back muscle characteristics and pressure pain sensitivity in low back pain patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some low back pain (LBP) patients recover after every pain episode whereas others develop chronicity. Research indicates that the amount of atrophy and fat infiltration differs between patients with LBP. Also enhanced pain sensitivity is present only in a subgroup of LBP patients. The relationship between pain sensitivity and muscular deformations in LBP, is however unexplored. This study examined the association between pressure pain sensitivity and the structural characteristics of the lumbar muscles in three different groups of non-specific LBP patients. METHODS: This

The influence of muscle fiber size and type distribution on electromyographic measures of back muscle fatigability.

STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study carried out on a group of 31 healthy, consenting volunteers with no history of low back pain (17 men, 14 women). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between electromyographic measures of erector spinae fatigability and the muscle's fiber type characteristics. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Using electromyographic techniques, a pronounced fatigability of the muscles of patients with low back pain has been identified. It has been postulated that this is the result of an unfavorable back muscle fiber type distribution, although an association bet

A new muscle pain detection device to diagnose muscles as a source of back and/or neck pain.

BACKGROUND: Trigger point (TrPs) identification has become the mainstay of diagnosis for the treatment of Myofascial Pain Syndrome; however, manual pressure (MP) to identify TrPs by determining low-pressure pain threshold has low interrater reliability and may lack validity since it is done on inactive muscles. To elicit contractions and mimic an active muscle or movement that "causes" pain, a Muscle Pain Detection Device (MPDD) has been developed. A selected muscle is stimulated and painful muscles are precisely detected, allowing distinctions between primary and referred muscle pain as well

Hamstring and lower back muscles flexibility as predictor of saddle pressures in young off-road cyclists.

INTRODUCTION: While pedaling, cyclists rest their pelvis on the saddle, generating pressures on it. The pressures generated on the saddle are influenced by several factors. This study aimed to evaluate whether the flexibility of hamstring and lower back muscles could be considered a predictor of pressures in the anterior region (PAR) on the saddle. METHODS: For this study, 15 young off-road Italian cyclists (11m, 4f) aged 13-16 (Italian Federation categories: ES1, ES2, AL1, AL2) were recruited. Each participant was administered the V sit-and-reach (VSR) to measure the hamstring and lower back

What is the effect of spino-pelvic sagittal parameters and back muscles on osteoporotic vertebral fracture?

STUDY DESIGN: Case control study. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of spino-pelvic sagittal parameters and back muscles on osteoporotic vertebral fracture. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Low bone mass is not the only important component of the risk on osteoporotic vertebral fracture; many other risk factors also contribute to skeletal fragility. METHODS: Seventy-two patients who had a lateral radiograph of the whole spine, magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine, and bone densitometry, were enrolled. The spino-pelvic sagittal parameters (pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt [PT], sacral slope, thora

Fat infiltration in the lumbar multifidus and erector spinae muscles in subjects with sway-back posture.

AIM: Decreased activity of the lumbar stabilizer muscles has been identified in individuals with sway-back posture. Disuse can predispose these muscles to atrophy, which is characterized by a reduced cross-sectional area (CSA) and by fat infiltration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of fat infiltration in the lumbar multifidus and lumbar erector spinae muscles as a sign of the muscle atrophy in individuals with sway-back posture, with and without low back pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five sedentary individuals between 16 and 40 years old participated in this study. The

Activation of lower back muscles via FES for pressure sores prevention in paraplegia: a case study.

The aim of this paper is to show the feasibility of the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied to the lower back muscles for pressure sores prevention in paraplegia. The hypothesis under study is that FES induces a change in the pressure distribution on the contact area during sitting. Tests were conducted on a paraplegic subject (T5), sitting on a standard wheelchair and cushion. Trunk extensors (mainly the erector spinae) were stimulated using surface electrodes placed on the skin. A pressure mapping system was used to measure the pressure on the sitting surface in four situa

Influence of paravertebral muscles training on brain plasticity and postural control in chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Isometric activation (ISOM) of deep multifidi muscles (MF) can influence postural adjustments and primary motor cortex (M1) function in chronic low back pain (CLBP). In order to better understand how ISOM impacts on CLBP condition, the present study contrasted ISOM after-effects on M1 function, MF postural activation and pain with another training, the global activation of paravertebral muscles (GLOB, hip extension). The main objective of this study was to compare the effects of ISOM and GLOB (3-week training each) on MF postural activation and M1 function in a CLBP pop

Examination of the myoelectric activity of back muscles during random vibration--methodical approach and first results.

OBJECTIVE: To elaborate methods for an elimination of artefacts and the analysis of the relationship between random whole-body vibration and electromyographic responses of back muscles. DESIGN: A procedure involving wavelets and digital filtering has been used for the removal of artefacts from the electromyogram during whole-body vibration. BACKGROUND: Back muscle forces contribute essentially to the whole-body vibration-induced spinal load. The electromyogram can help to estimate these forces during whole-body vibration. METHODS: 38 subjects were exposed to identical random low-frequency w

Confluent abscesses in autochthonous back muscles after spinal injections : A case report and narrative review of the literature on low back pain and spinal injections.

Injection therapy is a frequently used method for the treatment of subacute and chronic low back pain (LBP) despite scant evidence for its effectiveness. To date there are relatively few studies comparing this method with other treatments. Moreover, there are many possible side effects associated with injection therapies, some of which are potentially life threatening. We present the case of a 59-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department with confluent abscess formations of autochthonous back muscles and staphylococcal sepsis caused by injection therapy performed by a general practit
