Tolerance of anaerobic bacteria to chlorinated solvents.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of four chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), perchloroethene (PCE), carbon tetrachloride (CT), chloroform (CF) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), on the growth of eight anaerobic bacteria: four fermentative species (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Clostridium sp. and Paenibacillus sp.) and four respiring species (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Geobacter sulfurreducens, Shewanella oneidensis and Desulfovibrio vulgaris). Effective concentrations of solvents which inhibited growth rates by 50% (EC50) were determined. The octanol-water partition

Mastoiditis and Gradenigo's Syndrome with anaerobic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Gradenigo's syndrome is a rare disease, which is characterized by the triad of the following conditions: suppurative otitis media, pain in the distribution of the first and the second division of trigeminal nerve, and abducens nerve palsy. The full triad may often not be present, but can develop if the condition is not treated correctly. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 3-year-old girl, who presented with fever and left-sided acute otitis media. She developed acute mastoiditis, which was initially treated by intravenous antibiotics, ventilation tube insertion and cortical

Antimicrobial susceptibility of anaerobic bacteria in Bulgaria.

OBJECTIVES: The antimicrobial susceptibility of anaerobic bacteria isolated from clinical specimens in the referent for Bulgaria anaerobic laboratory was studied in a period of 25 years (1983-2007). METHODS: NCCLS-recommended agar dilution methods were used. beta-lactamase activity was determined with nitrocefin discs. RESULTS: The 29 antimicrobial agents included in the study were divided according to their in vitro activity against the anaerobic isolates into 4 main groups for guiding empirical treatment: 1st group of metronidazole, chloramphenicol, meropenem, imipenem and combinations of

[The role of anaerobic bacteria in peritonsillar abscesses].

Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) is a complication of acute bacterial tonsillitis. Its treatment remains controversial. Needle drainage of the abscess may provide an alternative to incision or tonsillectomy. An important element of controversy is the choice of antibiotics after surgical drainage of the abscess. Results of many studies support the resistance of grown bacteria to many antibiotics and the potential importance of anaerobic bacteria in development of peritonsillar abscesses. Although bacteria grown from the pus vary among the continents, clinical implications resulting from the micro

The association of anaerobic bacteria with infectious mononucleosis.

This review summarizes the information that supports the potential importance of anaerobic bacteria in the pharyngo-tonsillitis (PT) associated with infectious mononucleosis (IM). Evidence supportive of the potential of involvement of bacteria in IM was provided by several studies that showed increased recovery of bacteria on the tonsillar surfaces in IM. Several studies demonstrated that metronidazole therapy alleviated the clinical symptoms of tonsillar hypertrophy and shortened the duration of fever in IM. Metronidazole has no antimicrobial activity against aerobic bacteria and is only effe

The role of anaerobic bacteria in human infections.

Anaerobes are generally accepted as clinically important pathogens. Although they are found on most mucocutaneous surfaces, anaerobic bacteria are especially abundant in the upper and lower respiratory tracts, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract. They are involved in infections such as chronic sinusitis, aspiration pneumonia, lung abscess, intra-abdominal abscess, bacterial vaginosis, decubitus ulcer, and bite wounds. Depending on the type and location of the infection, treatment may involve surgical drainage and a multiple antibiotic regimen that provides protection against both

Anaerobic bacteria in 21 horses with pleuropneumonia.

Anaerobic bacteria are important and overlooked bacterial pathogens of the lower respiratory tract in horses. Twenty-one of 46 horses with pleuropneumonia had anaerobic bacteria isolated from pleural fluid or from tracheobronchial aspirate. Bacteroides oralis and B melaninogenicus were the anaerobes most frequently isolated. Survival was significantly less for horses from which anaerobes were isolated than for horses from which anaerobes were not isolated. Putrid odor was associated with the pleural fluid and/or breath in 62% of the horses from which anaerobes were isolated. In these horses, t

Anaerobic bacteria in bone and joint infections.

The etiologic importance of anaerobic microorganisms in bone and joint infections in certain settings has recently been emphasized. These settings include recovery of Actinomyces species, hematogenously acquired infection, the presence of anaerobes in pure culture, and prosthetic-joint infection. Frequently, mixed aerobic-anaerobic bone or joint infection develops as a consequence of infection in adjacent areas. The incidence with which anaerobes are present in these settings is undoubtedly underestimated and may often be unappreciated in regard to the selection of therapeutic agents. Therefor

The role of anaerobic bacteria in intraabdominal infections.

The exact role the anaerobic enteric flora plays in the pathogenesis and persistence of intraabdominal infections due to perforation of a hollow viscus is still unclear. Four lines of evidence have been evaluated. (1) Careful cultures of intraabdominal infections almost always yield anaerobic bacteria, but only relatively few species are predictably found, compared with the hundreds of species populating the colon. (2) Experimental models have demonstrated that the pathogenetic roles of aerobes and anaerobes differ from one another during the establishment of mixed intraabdominal sepsis. Facul

Incidence and significance of intraperitoneal anaerobic bacteria.

To amplify recent interest in anaerobic infections following abdominal disease, trauma, or surgery, 512 consecutive patients subjected to emergency celiotomy had both aerobic and anaerobic cultures taken of peritoneal fluid as well as all complicating wound and intra-abdominal infections. Average time between peritoneal entry of abscess drainage and specimen incubating under anaerobic conditions was less than two minutes. During 4 of the seven study months, patients had antibiotic therapy randomized, with clindaymcin or cephalothin being sole parenteral agents and given intravenously prior to

[Mediastinitis caused by anaerobic bacteria. 4 cases].

In 4 cases of mediastinitis caused by anaerobes and consecutive to dental abscess (2 cases), perforation of the oesophagus and tonsillar abscess, the diagnosis was based on widening of the mediastinum associated, in 2 cases, with pneumomediastinum. II all 4 cases, Bacteroides fragilis was present among other germs. Treatment consisted of surgical drainage by thoracotomy (2 cases), or cervicotomy and antibiotic therapy. Two of the patients, who were old and had underlying diseases, died.

[Antibiotic resistance of anaerobic bacteria (author's transl)].

Reference data on the overall resistance patterns of anaerobic bacteria are needed since in individual clinical cases susceptibility testing is complicated by the long generation time and difficulties of test conditions. Benzylpenicillin and tetracyclines are the drugs of choice against Clostridium perfringens. Newer cephalosporins are also active, whereas other Clostridium species have been found resistant. Beta-lactam antibiotics show high activity against Peptococcaceae; resistance to clindamycin should be noted, however. The good in vitro activity of tetracyclines, clindamycin and erythrom
